We are told one of the highest points in Lehigh Co. Miles of mountains, valleys & farmland can be seen. Almost 29 glorious open & mainly level hilltop acres yearning to return back to an equestrian estate they were once part of. There is a cute barn that can be restored back to an 8 stall stable & tack rm. Returning the 48x75 steel building back into an indoor arena that it used to be is a cost effective option-it now houses vehicles & parts. The home perched high atop a hill has a completely delightful interior featuring hardwood tongue&groove pegged flooring & a unique LR with a huge stone fireplace & tongue & groove vaulted ceiling. Unique step-up dining room with log walls & a really lovely gourmet eat-in kitchen. Lower level includes a family room with floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, bedroom, small bathroom & cedar closet. Charming & spacious enclosed porch. Small in-ground pool & pretty pergola. Landscaped waterfall in front. New furnace installed 4-22-13. 2 tax parcels included

Do not enter premises unaccompanied by a real estate agent!

LCR has helped horses, dogs, cats, donkeys, mules and many other types of animals, and works closely with the Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia. Whether it is a lovable dog with medical issues that make euthanasia the only option in an over-crowded city-run shelter; or a beautiful, terrified horse at auction and bound for slaughter, animals in trouble can find that last chance through the efforts of Lori, her staff and the dedicated volunteers of Last Chance Ranch.

If you are looking for a new riding partner, pasture pet, or canine companion, Last Chance Ranch may have just the right friend for you. Contact them to make an appointment to visit their resident animals.

This fantastic rescue group is also always looking for volunteers! To do your part to help homeless animals, check out the LCR website to find out how you can volunteer either on or off the farm.

Last Chance Ranch also holds group tours of the facility, horseback riding lessons, summer camp programs, and is happy to help with community service projects.
Riding Gets High Tech: Track My Hack App

There are tons of smartphone apps out there to help you track and organize your exercise program, from programs that map out your daily run to apps that help you make healthy eating choices and create workouts, but until now there was nothing available to riders to track their horses' fitness.

Enter "Track My Hack", an app developed by Woof Wear, a manufacturer of protective horse boots. This app is designed specifically for equestrians, and is a helpful tool to help track progress as you log hours on the trail or in the fields conditioning your horses for spring competitions.

Start by entering profile information for you and your horse, tack up, hop on, and hit the "Start Hacking" button. The app will track the distance, speed, and time of your hack and allow you to save your route when you're done. You can even share routes with friends and see where your barn buddies are riding! Using GPS technology, Track My Hack creates a map of your route, which is a great feature when you are out blazing new trails in uncharted territory. Dressage riders can even use it to check the accuracy of schooling figures in the ring. To check out this neat little app for yourself, just search for it in the app store on your smartphone. Happy riding!

Protecting Your Horses Using Quarantine Procedures

With the recent outbreaks of EHV-1 in nearby farms and popular show grounds, it's important to know what actions to take when you have a sick horse on your property.

The top priority when there is a contagious equine on your farm is to separate it from the healthy horses in the barn. Put the sick horse in a stall at the end of the aisle, and try to reduce traffic in and out of the area where the sick horse is located. Keep one empty stall between the infected animal and its healthy barn mates to minimize the risk of contact between horses. Stopping movement of horses in and out of your facility until there is no more risk of infection is always a good idea.

If the sick horse is well enough to be turned out, keep it in a separate paddock that does not share a fence line with areas where healthy horses are outside grazing.

If at all possible, assign one person to care for the infected horse who will not come into contact with any other horses. Make sure whoever handles the sick animal wears disposable gloves, coveralls or scrubs, and boots designated for use around the ill horse. Use separate tools, buckets, halters, etc. that will only come into contact with the sick horse. All clothing that is worn while caring for the infected animal should be washed immediately after use. Use bleach to disinfect equipment, feed and water buckets, wheelbarrows, and shoes frequently, and monitor the body temperature and health of other horses on the property on a daily basis.

And of course, if there is a horse on your farm that is infected with a contagious disease, always consult your veterinarian for treatment and control procedures. If appropriate action is taken, you can stop the spread of dangerous diseases and save the lives of the horses in your care.

Dream Tack Rooms

The tack room is an essential component to any organized stable. It's a place to store your equipment, clean your saddle, and keep treats where your horse can't find them! Especially in Pennsylvania where the weather can change drastically without notice, a tack room is essential to keep your valuable riding equipment safe from wind and moisture. Designs can range from an extra stall outfitted with a few standing saddle racks to gorgeous creations fit for a king. Feast your eyes on this list of "19 Tack Rooms That Are Nicer Than Your House" from Horse Nation, and maybe you'll get some ideas on how to spiff up your own tack room!

Foxhunting: A Pennsylvania Tradition

The sport of foxhunting dates back hundreds of years. It began in England in the 1500's when it was used as a means to control the fox population, and has remained popular among horsemen both in Britain and here in the United States. While today fox hunters do not actually kill the fox at the end of the hunt, the basic form remains the same. A group of riders, led by the Huntsman, follow a pack of hounds across the countryside in pursuit of a fox, wherever the clever creature happens to lead them.

Foxhunting is particularly popular in our home state of Pennsylvania, where horses and riders can partake in this historic activity as a part of the many hunt clubs that exist today. The beautiful Pennsylvania countryside provides the perfect setting for chasing foxes.

The sport depends entirely on the hounds, who are responsible for catching the scent of the fox, and lead the horses and riders on the chase. The hounds are selected and bred carefully for their ability to smell and track a fox. Without the fox, of course, fox hunting would not be possible, either! For that reason, fox hunters are staunch advocates for the preservation of wild foxes, and were instrumental in restricting the season during which foxes can be killed for their fur.

One of the most wonderful aspects of the sport of fox hunting is that it brings equestrians of all walks of life together for a day of fun and enjoying the outdoors. Contrary to how it may appear, fox hunting is not just for the "elite" members of society, but can be enjoyed by any horseman with a steady mount and a willingness to contribute to the group. To get involved in fox hunting in your area, contact a hunt club near you and see what this great sport is all about!

A Room With A View

When you put your home on the market, what's outside can be almost as important as what's inside. A beautiful view can seal the deal, and there are a few simple things you can do to help what's outside your home sell the whole thing.

If you are lucky enough to have a view of water, fields, woods, farmland, or beautiful historic buildings from your home, remove window coverings to let potential buyers see the lovely views outside. Sometimes what's outside your home makes less than a pretty picture. In that case, put up sheer window coverings that let in light but don't offer a look into an alley or your neighbor's living room.

If the exterior of your neighbor's home needs a little maintenance, offer to pay to have painting, tree-trimming, or minor repairs done. These little things can help enhance the overall appeal of your home, and showcase what's beautiful about the outside as well as the inside!

Experimental Drug Offers Hope For Laminitic Horses

Laminitis is one of the most devastating diseases that can affect an equine. It is a metabolic condition that causes severe inflammation of the tissues in the hoof known as the laminae, and many horses who contract laminitis never recover. Laminitic horses experience extreme pain in their feet, and many will spend the majority of their time lying down because it just hurts too much to stand. In some cases it becomes impossible to alleviate the pain, and euthanasia is the only option.

Traditionally, laminitis has been treated with cold therapy and anti-inflammatory drugs in an attempt to relieve the inflamed tissues. Researchers at UC Davis have been looking to a drug that was actually discovered 40 years ago, but just now being used in veterinary medicine, to give hope to horses afflicted with laminitis. The drug, known as t-TUCB is a type of anti-inflammatory compound first discovered during research on insect biology, and has so far been extremely successful in treating laminitis. Horses that would otherwise have to have been euthanized have recovered after administration of t-TUCB, with no adverse side affects.

We hope that more research will be conducted in the near future, and t-TUCB will be come a "wonder drug" for horses stricken with laminitis.

It's Not Just A Home, It's An Investment

There are so many opportunities for investment these days, it can be overwhelming trying to decide which ones will give you the best return and make the most of your hard-earned money. If you're currently renting and are considering home ownership, take these facts into consideration and try looking at buying your own property as an investment.

Real estate can be a better investment than other options because, let's face it, you can't live in your stock portfolio! As the market is heading into recovery mode, the possibility of making a profit when you eventually sell your home is increasing all the time.

You can also benefit from the tax breaks associated with home ownership. According to the real estate experts at Keeping Current Matters, When you sell your primary residence, you may be eligible for up to $500,000 worth of tax exclusions on the gain from the sale, depending on your marital and filing status! As long as you own and live in the home, and haven't excluded gains from another sale in the past 2 years, you can save a ton by excluding your profits from taxation. (http://www.kcmblog.com/2012/12/12/homeownership-as-an-investment/)

And for horse owners, buying a farm that gives you the ability to house your equines at home can save a lot of money on board bills. If you have the desire, knowhow, and time to take care of your own horses on a daily basis, purchasing a farm can be a very wise investment indeed!

More Opportunity For Zone II Hunters

USHJA Zone II, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, traditionally holds its Hunter Finals in Harrisburg, PA each fall, but some riders in the zone have voiced concerns that the finals cater only to those who compete in the larger - and more expensive - A-rated shows during the rest of the year. Zone Finals are a year-end goal for many riders who don't travel to Florida for the winter or show on the indoor circuit. Since qualifying scores are based on the number of horses in a given class, many competitors that frequent smaller B- and C-rated shows felt that they were missing out on an opportunity to qualify for Finals.

In response to this concern, the USHJA has proposed the idea that Zone II hold a second Finals competition geared towards riders who earn their points at B and C shows, in addition to the year-end competition held at Harrisburg. The Stirrup Cup Finals would serve as a year-end goal for riders who might not otherwise qualify for Zone Finals. While the funds to create a lower-level Finals show are available, organization will be tricky in order to find a date and venue that work for Zone II competitors. Hopefully within the next few years we will see a new year-end final for hunter iders across the state of Pennsylvania.

Seasonal Price Patterns

As we head into the winter months, home prices will begin to drop slightly, as is normal for this time of year. Even though the market, in general, is on the rise, we'll likely still see a small dip in prices this winter. Historically, prices tend to increase in the spring through early fall, and then soften a bit as it gets colder. So, sellers, don't get discouraged! Prices are still rising overall, but buyers can take advantage of the slight dip in home prices by purchasing properties this winter.
