Widen a doorway with Swing Away Hinges - 02/23/12 12:45 PM
Have you ever tried to fit something through a doorway, just to find that the door itself was in the way? Just ask anyone who has ever been confined to a wheelchair at some point in time, they will tell you that most doorways are too narrow to begin with. One solution is to remove the door altogether, but in modern homes today, the only rooms that have a door are bedrooms and bathrooms. A little privacy please? A great solution to this problem are Swing Away Hinges (also called Offset Hinges). These hinges swing the door completely out and away

Aging In Place: The Role of Barrier Free Design - 02/20/12 01:15 PM
Aging in Place, as defined by Wiki, is "the ability to live in one's own home - wherever that might be - for as long as confidently and comfortably possible". Think about that for a moment ... think about the home you are living in right now. It may be a little too big if you are an empty nester. It may be a little too small if you are a growing family. Then again, it might be just right. But, even as Goldilocks would discover, an individual with a disability may not be able to function well in your

Haley Johnsen from Oregon on American Idol - 02/17/12 03:08 PM
As a Native Oregonian, I love it when I see other Oregonians representing their home State in a good light. Haley Johnsen, from Beaverton, is doing just that. Last night, American Idol aired a performance featuring Haley, Reed Grimm, Elise Testone, and Eben Christian Franckewitz. It was a fantastic group effort and very fun to watch. Apparently, I wasn't the only one who enjoyed the show. This morning, a photo of the foursome was featured on the landing page of yahoo.com. These kids young adults sang their hearts out with their rendition of “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes”.

Aging In Place: The Role of Universal Design - 02/08/12 04:25 PM
Aging in Place, as defined by Wiki, is "the ability to live in one's own home - wherever that might be - for as long as confidently and comfortably possible". Universal Design has an important role when it comes to the Aging in Place concept. Before I start talking about Universal Design, let me share something with you. *Beginning January 1, 2006, on average, a new 60 year old was celebrating a birthday every seven seconds, and these celebrations will continue for another 18 years. The impact of this demographic shift will affect every level of our social, economic and political

Aging In Place: The New Frontier - 02/07/12 04:45 PM
Aging in Place, as defined by Wiki, is "the ability to live in one's own home - wherever that might be - for as long as confidently and comfortably possible". Aging in Place is quickly becoming the new frontier, largely due to the baby boomers. *Beginning January 1, 2006, on average, a new 60 year old was celebrating a birthday every seven seconds, and these celebrations will continue for another 18 years. The impact of this demographic shift will affect every level of our social, economic and political systems. Today, assisted living facilities are full and many of them have

Search Engine Submission Scam - 02/06/12 05:11 PM
Wow ... someone has come up with a real beaut. I received an offer to have a company submit one of my domain names to search engines so my customers can find me easier. And for only $499.00, they will submit my domain name for life. I'm always leery when I'm offered something "for life" because I never know if they mean my lifetime or theirs. All I have to do is complete the form that was included and fax it to them. They will then contact me to give me instructions on how to pay with my

3+ Bedroom Townhome for RENT at Cotati Station - 02/06/12 02:53 PM
Cotati Station is one of the newest communities in Cotati, just a few blocks away from Sonoma State University. Aptly named for the its proximity to the future commuter train station, these townhomes are perfect for a busy family or SSU students who prefer to live off campus. This 3 bedroom (plus huge bonus room!) townhome is currently available for rent for $2400.00 a month. With 1700 square feet of living space on three levels, this modern townhome affords privacy and comfort. Unlike most condos for rent in Cotati, this townhome also has a full size two-car garage. Your

A nice hello from South Africa! - 02/05/12 03:17 PM
When I started blogging in 2010, I wasn't really sure what the benefits would be. At the very least, I was hoping to gain exposure in my community and ultimately drum up some real estate business. What I wasn't expecting, among other things, was to be contacted by people from all over the world who were inspired from something I wrote. Some of these folks call me, some send an e-mail, it's always a pleasant surprise. I've had many buyers and agents from all over the U.S. call or write because of a post I wrote about my frustrations with Bank

Last-Time Home Buyers - 02/02/12 07:20 PM
My maternal Grandmother, who was 84 at the time, broke her hip in her own apartment. Lucky for us, an attentive Meals on Wheels driver determined she was hurt and called for help. My Mom made the decision to move her Mother to a "retirement home" as soon as she was discharged from the hospital. Our search was short lived ... there were only three assisted living facilities in Corvallis (Oregon, 1989) at the time. I remember thinking "there is no way there will be enough retirement homes for us baby boomers ... we will have to figure out an alternative
