There are several councils to choose from, including North, West, Downtown, Arlington and Beaches, and then there are several specialty councils like the Health Council I'm joining for lunch today.
If you did resolve to improve your networking opportunities, you may want to consider the Annual Meeting event later this month - details are below.

jacksonville: Gaining The Global Edge, NEFAR, 9/12/13 - 09/12/13 10:18 AM

I should have posted this PRIOR to the event, but didn't get to do that, so this will have to suffice.
Our Global Business Council sponsored a day long seminar today on our growing international real estate market.
I had to be there, as the President of NEFAR, for the introductions, and I had planned to stay for part of the day. Turns out, the speakers were fabulous, and I spent the ENTIRE day at the program.
We had two agent panels, one that addressed the European countries, and one focused on Asian countries. A money exchange company, a … (3 comments)

jacksonville: Billboard Advertising & Sign Restrictions, Jacksonville, FL - 09/05/13 09:45 PM
I've had the opportunity to spend over 20 hours this year at City Council meetings in Jacksonville, FL.
Why? To deal with our local sign ordinance issues, as they relate to real estate signage.
Previously, open house signs locally were illegal, and a bill that had permited our profession's open house signs was due to sunset, so we had to work with the City Council on modifying that, and extending it for another three years. Interesting to say the least.
I know Jacksonville residents have a long running issue with all signage, labeling it visual pollution.
I actually worked for an … (16 comments)

jacksonville: Kitten University, Jacksonville, FL - 06/23/13 11:20 AM

Those of us with pets, whether rescued or pure bred, tend to keep an eye on the local animal care centers.
This story is so sweet, and really touched a chord in my heart (I fostered a litter of 5 a year and a half ago, and adopted one, Stoli), as it's so important for the entire community to be aware of these kinds of things.
Kitten University is the only neo-natal kitten university, and provides homes and care for homeless, underage kittens. KU helps them get to the the eight week period and reach 2 pounds, so they can … (1 comments)

jacksonville: NFl Tightens Security Again - 06/13/13 08:59 PM
Those of us who have attended at least one NFL game in our lifetimes can recall how stadium security used to be, and how it is now.

Growing up in New Jersey, I went to many Giants games. At that time, you could even bring in coolers, which was (to me and others) awesome.

These days, you definitely cannot bring a cooler, and now the types of bags you can bring are being addressed.  Keep in mind, just like TPC in our area, these restrictions will be enforced so prior planning is the best option.

With the exception … (2 comments)

jacksonville: Senate Passes $74.3 Billion Budget, Benefits First Coast - 04/10/13 09:21 AM
Having just spent the past 36 hours in Tallahassee, meeting with our state legislators to discuss key points (affordable housing, property insurance & sales tax on commercial leases), I read this article with great interest.
Some key projects that are getting funding include:
St. John's River restoration - key for our entire state, really, as there was the concept that other parts of Florida could tap the St. John's River for their fresh water source.
Grant money for historic preservation projects in St. John's county, which is certainly necessary.
Another highlight includes funding for the St. John's River Ferry, which is … (3 comments)

Apparently, especially in Jacksonville, FL.
$375 million worth of multi family/apartment housing changed owners in 2011 here, and that number rose to $600 million in 2012. And,  it seems we are attracting large investor groups, which is fabulous for our region.

jacksonville: Jacksonville Jaguars Mularkey's Future.... - 12/26/12 10:29 PM
I have been an NFL fan for years. Decades, actually. I grew up in New Jersey, and was fortunate to attend NY Giants games as a kid.....and, even if they lost, I always felt as though they had given their all.
When I moved out, I felt as though I had to have my own team, not the same team as my dad, and chose the Chicago Bears. The 1984-1985 Bears, with Ditka as coach, The SuperBowl Shuffle Bears. Nice timing on my part, eh?
And, so in Jacksonville, I have been a Jaguars fan.  It's been the toughest sporting relationship … (2 comments)

jacksonville: Best Christmas Lights, Jacksonville, FL - 12/12/12 07:23 AM
This is the time of year when it's so much fun to drive around and look at holiday light decorations!  I have friends who used to hire a limo so we could enjoy some beverages while on the tour. These were reader submitted, I do recall some of the best displays are in the older areas of town, where the homes sit on LARGE lots, and the families honor the annual tradition of putting up lights.
Enjoy!
