The annual Winter Fair at the French International School in Bethesda MD drew crowds hungry for unique gift items, arts & crafts from around the world, and a sampling of international cuisine and pastries. The annual fair raises money to benefit classroom activities, and brings together local vendors with unique hand-crafted items. I managed to cross quite a few items off my Christmas shopping list this afternoon. Organizers of the fair, above, include on the far left, Eric Veteau, Headmaster of the school, and far right Loubna Hatoum, school parent.

In the last few years it has become more and more difficult for members of the international diplomatic community stationed in the US to purchase a home here. Since it has become more difficult for all categories of buyers, why should foreign diplomats be any different? Yet, despite the credit crunch and tightening of underwriting rules, I have made home ownership a reality for several diplomats. Winter Arts & Crafts International Fair in Bethesda Sat. Dec. 11 2010 - 12/08/10 11:04 AM
Families and shoppers looking for an international experience can stop in on Saturday at the French International School / Lycée Rochambeau's annual Winter Fair. It runs from 9:30 to 5pm, and there will be everything from imported hand bags to locally produced items and a buffet. You can pick up something really unique for a holiday gift. There is hand-crafted jewelry, table cloths, leather pouches, something for everyone. Children's actvities include Pottery and Face painting, Gingerbread and Cupcakes decorating, Hair Breading, and WII Dance. The U.S. Botanic Garden is a unique refuge from the hustle and bustle of living in and around the nation's capital. From orchid exhibits that take your breath away to seasonal displays, the Garden, situated near Capitol Hill is surely one of our national treasures. This year, if you wish to do something more than sending out "nice cards" to friends and family, may I recommend you consider ordering cards that give to a cause? Yesterday I found the following group.

In most cases, a substantial portion of the proceeds from the card purchase goes to a non-profit, and the amount is indicated.
