One of the most magnificent sights in the Washington DC area is without a doubt the flowering Cherry Trees at the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial. This year, they faded quickly because of the unusual April heat wave. Luckily, as the trees around the Tidal Basin turned from pink to green, the buds on the rest of the region's flowering trees were just starting to burst, as these photos taken in the weeks after illustrate. Its one of the reasons April is the most glorious time of the year to visit DC and a season of joy for its residents.

kensington: Montgomery County property tax assessments just in: time to appeal?

For many of you, the answer to that question is a definite yes! If you have just received your property tax assessment in the mail, and are surprised to see a high valuation, its probably time to appeal. There is no reason to pay more taxes than necessary. The tax assessor may be looking at values from two years ago and assuming a continuous rise in property values. So plan to make a written appeal, and if successful, that could save you some bucks. I was recently asked by urbanturf.com to describe three Maryland areas that are up and coming and provide good investment potential. They specifically did not want to include well established and pricey areas such as Bethesda and Chevy Chase. Of course, I do not advocate anything but long-term investing, whether it is to buy property for a rental (buy and hold), or as a residence. The market continues to show large inventory of unsold properties and relatively low volume of homes under contract indicating a strong buyers' market.
