Dishwashers: A short list of recommendations for greener use - 10/04/07 07:20 PM
Evan Little posted some dishwasher recommendations and buying advice.
I'd like to add my own short list of suggestions:
don't run unless full. Your dishwasher uses the same amount of energy regardless.don't rinse the dishes before loading, just scrape. Today's dishwashers are capable of cleaning even the toughest hardened food.if there are dishes which have been sitting for a couple of days, run the 'rince' cycle first. It uses substantially less water than rinsing by hand.Check to see if your Provincial/State or Federal Governments provide grants and or rebates for purchasing new Energy Star appliances.

A List of Green Manufacturers & Resources For Sustainable Living - 10/04/07 06:20 PM
Wood Flooring Manufacturers
I recommend modern wood flooring (engineered) to reduce the unnecessary drain on natural resources. Rather than the whole strip being hard wood, with engineered only the top layer is hard wood. The top layer can come in many thicknesses (milles) allowing you to sand and refinish as many times as a solid wood flooring. Modern wood flooring construction is stable even during variations in temperature and humidity. Modern wood flooring makes responsible use of natural resources...and when it has reached the end of it's life...it returns to Mother Nature not the landfill.KAHRS - http://www.kahrs.com/- Kahrs was the first … (5 comments)

Scared Green? If that's what it takes. - 10/04/07 04:45 PM
Studies released today by, Underwriters Laboratory, state that due to the amount of synthetic materials in our homes today the average time we have to get out upon hearing our smoke detector activating has gone from 15-17 (1970's) minutes to only 3 or 4 minutes.
Read the UL press release and watch the livingroom burn clip here.
If you are holding out on going green...perhaps this will give you the nudge you need.
How do you explain to someone that the life of your loved ones is worth less than the cost of greening your home environment?
3 minutes that's all the time you get. Hopefully it's not … (6 comments)

Staging/Stager = trailer-park - 10/02/07 08:45 PM
In my last post about Designers and Decorators starting to offer services to help homeowners prepare their homes for sale I mentioned some of the service 'names' used such as 'Property Presentation', Real Estate Fluffing, etc. I know many don't think any other name will do but 'Staging' and the title 'Stager', but I disagree. I really don't like the term/title - they are just not professional.
Are we stuck with them?
I mentioned in a comment on AR that I thought the term 'staging' was trailer-park. In any other country other then the U.S. and Canada the term staging and stager are not used. The … (30 comments)
