"Are You Chicken" in Bend? - 06/29/11 05:17 PM
Chicken. July 2nd is the Americana Celebration! Can't you just smell that? Something is baking, frying, cooking and roasting: there's a chicken-cooking contest in the NorthWest Crossing neighborhood of Bend. Not only will there be a chicken cook-off, but there will be many vendors and stalls with musicians and crafts: face painting, chicken cooking, blues-funk music and more. The gathered people will be fun and thriving with activity and excitement: those visiting Bend should certainly come and see the festivities.
This bout of fun starts with a parade headed from Compass Park to the market on Northwest Crossing Drive. Everyone in … (1 comments)

Bend's Fourth of July Celebrations - 06/27/11 03:26 PM
Sparklers. There are screaming children running up and down the street with them sputtering in their hands. The smoky scent of Pilot Butte after the fireworks set the very top aflame (as always). Leather seats in the car have become the most painful torture imaginable. The smell of the sun-heated city fills the air. Bowls of water are set outside of downtown stores for dogs that are panting in the heat. Ice cream trucks are roaming the streets once again. Summer has at last come to Bend. Life has become livelier now that the youth of our city are outside of … (0 comments)

Waiting for a Flood - 06/20/11 06:27 PM
Tourists. It brings to mind people in bright shirts and flip-flops with sunglasses and a flash camera. Not only do tourists not look like this, but we've been noticing that less of them have been appearing. Bend has felt this lack of tourists over the past couple of years as though it's a drought. With the recession at the front of everyone's minds there haven't been as many tourists. Central Oregon is thirsty for a fresh wave of tourists . . . but local business leaders are hoping for a downpour this year.
Tourists often bring money with them that they've … (0 comments)

Cascade Cycling Classic in Bend - 06/16/11 03:00 PM
Cycling. The wind rushes by as you continue riding. With the street clear you don't have to worry about cars getting in your way: you have the road to yourself. Bike riding is as fun as it is challenging. Even if you don't ride a bike yourself, it is still fun to keep up with the events and watch the races. By participating or supporting the people in the race, you may find yourself drawn to the excitement that comes with such wonderful events.

Foreclosure Centers in America - 06/13/11 06:04 PM
Foreclosure. The word makes most people's mouth go dry. After dealing with many different foreclosures and mortgages from Countrywide, the Bank of America is starting to regret it. As the status of the bank seemed to drop, some decisions were made. It was time to change dramatically. The Bank of America has announced that 28 foreclosure preventions centers will be opened in 22 different states between today and the month of July. The Bank operates only 12 of such centers currently and states that these centers have been used by over 17,000 mortgage holders. Things are getting a bit crowded in … (0 comments)

Reconciling Bend’s Districts - 06/08/11 04:05 PM
Conciliation. Republicans and Democrats in the Oregon Legislature are considering new terms for Bend: different margins for the legislative districts in Oregon. In a recent news conference lawmakers agreed to take a closer look at these latest borders; they projected it as a plan to create an agreement for a rather intense political discussion. For years the Legislature had been unable to establish new boundaries for the districts and has sent the task to the secretary of state.
Though the boundaries are proposed, no agreement has been made for the congressional districts. The redistricting committees will be holding a public hearing … (0 comments)
