Do You Need to Dispose of Bulky Items? Call 3-1-1.

The Bureau of Sanitation will pick up large items such as Refrigerators, mattresses, couches and other furniture.

It is that time of year. The girl scouts are out and selling those wonderful cookies.

The varieties of cookies they are selling are as follows:  Samoas, Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Do-So-Dos, Trefoils, Lemon Chalet Cremes, Sugar Free Chocolate Chip Cookies, All Abouts.  All boxes of cookies will cost $4.00 this year.  Right now they are in the Pre-Orders stage. This means that they will be taking orders for the cookies until February 23, 2008 and this is the date when they will start selling outside the stores.

Free Tax Preparation Services for seniors...

 The IRS and AARP have created a joint effort, to offer free tax preparation and electronic filing services for low and middle-income seniors.  From now through April 11 you can set up an appointment.

 Grand Opening of New West Valley Animal Care Center.

The new West Valley Animal Care Center in Chatsworth had its Grand opening ceremony Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007.

 General Manager of Animal Services Ed Boks, City Engineer Gary Lee Moore, CITY COUNCIL MEMBER Greig Smith and State Assemblyman Lloyd Levine. Was in attendance the expansion of the new West Valley Animal Care Center will help the City better serve residents and their pets, improve animal health and safety, and encourage more people to adopt pets.

Community members were also invited to tour the new facility, pet care vendors had booths with pet care and nutrition information, and professional pet portraits were available for people who adopted animals at the event. The facility is now over 22,000 sqft in size which is more than double what it was. The construction was completed on time, and under budget, and it was funded by city bonds in 2000 under proposition F.

The facility is energy efficient. Includes a new spay, and neuter clinic, larger, and more animal holding areas, and special holding area for farm animals.

Making Funds for Parks 

This week the L.A. city council  introduced legislation that would make it easier to spend developer fees for parks and open space in the community. This legislation would widen the radius of the area where the Quimby fees could be spent and make the spending of the fees more flexible. The residential housing boom has brought the City Quimby fees a total of $120 million since 2002. However, the funds must be spent within two miles of the development, and sometimes there are no parks or recreational facilities in the area. This is why the city council decided to widen the radius.

The Quimby program requires developers to offset the impact of residential developments by providing access to open space and parkland for nearby residents. To find out more about the Quimby Program click here

 Clean-Up and Restoration Jobs After the Wildfires...

Last week the L.A. city council authored legislation enabling them to use State emergency funding for clean up and restoration of areas burned in the recent wildfires this legislation will help create new jobs in the Los Angeles area.

The City's Community Development Department has been granted $770,460 in State emergency grant funds to enable the City to participate in clean-up and restoration of some of the 104,000 acres burned in the fires in Los Angeles County.

The City will create 50 temporary clean-up and restoration jobs, including training and safety instruction, with first priority going to people displaced by the fires.

Help protect the environment! Bring your household waste and electronic equipment to be disposed of properly and safely at this one-day collection event at CSUN.

 From 9am-3pm at CSUN Parking located at Lassen St. & Lindley Ave.

The event will accept:

Paint and solvents, aerosol cans, used motor oil and filters and automotive fluids, pool, garden and household cleaning chemicals, batteries, electronics, cables, phones.

The following will not be accepted:

Ammunition, explosives, radioactive, material, biological waste, bulky items, furniture, paper, computer software.

"Adopt a Firefighter"

 Is having its adopt an LAFD firefighter for an afternoon to support your local Fire Station #107.

Starts 11am - 2pm Mention that you wish to adopt a firefighter and Poquito Mas will donate 20% of your bill to support LAFD. All monies will go to help Fire Station #107 buy new equipment.

L.A. Fire Department personnel will be on hand to demonstrate fire trucks and firefighting equipment.

On Nov. 11: AT O'Melveny Park at 17300 sesnon Blvd, Granada Hills Ca. 91344 the Girls Scouts & TreePeople will be planting 95 trees

The Tree people are a Los Angeles-based environmental nonprofit group.

To celebrate the 95th anniversary of their national organization, The Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley is partnering with TreePeople to plant 95 trees. The event is part of a nationwide Girl Scout community service project promoting environmental awareness and civic responsibility. More than 400 Girl Scouts, ages five to eighteen, will plant 95 five-gallon coast live oak trees and other native species. A 36" big leaf maple will also be planted in a special ceremony to honor the 95th anniversary of Girl Scouts

Planting trees in city parks is part of TreePeople's work to expand Los Angeles' urban forest on city streets, school campuses, city parks and the mountains surrounding L.A. The November 11 event is a partnership between TreePeople, Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and Million Trees LA.
