web design: Google's Funny Algorithm and Real Time Search - Are You On Top? Are You Sure? - 12/17/09 03:06 PM
This is only speculation and musing, but it seems that since Google started preparation and subsequent launch of real time search, there have been some interesting changes in what shows up for search terms. As I've cited before, I'm no top photographer in Orange County. I'm a good photographer, even a great photographer but I'm definitely outclassed by some of the best photographers in the world who live right here in the OC. Nevertheless, I can find myself on page one or page two for searches like Orange County photographers, and Orange County photography. The interesting part is not whether I'm

web design: Two Important Reasons to Upgrade from Free Wordpress - 09/29/09 08:22 PM
If you’re using a free Wordpress account, you’ve likely heard and seen that Wordpress is very SEO friendly. A hosted Wordpress solution such as Bluehost, with the right plug-in will blow the doors off the SEO performance of the free version. Why? 1. Google knows where it is. While Google crawls the Wordpress.com site frequently, it doesn’t necessarily give full community ranking to the individual sites in the community. Your site is evaluated with the rest of the community and may even be passed over in a Google crawl for any number of reasons. A hosted Wordpress blog on a server not in the Wordpress.com

web design: Setting Up A Wordpress Blog on Bluehost - 09/27/09 11:41 PM
Setting Up A Wordpress Blog on Bluehost I use a third party blog posting package for most of my blogs. I’m basically lazy efficient in what I do with technology so I look for the solution that takes the least time to get the job done. Nobody likes to click and search to add images, especially when there is a way to simply drag and drop (Blogo does this perfectly! – sorry, Mac only!) I found myself staring at the white screen of Activerain once again, wanting to simply drag my photos I was going to discuss (now put off until another

web design: What If They Built A Website And Nobody Came? - 08/31/09 08:04 PM
Anyone can design a website, well not anyone but many can and do. Plenty of designers can out-design me, creating works of sheer stunning beauty. I've seen those websites because I troll the web looking for new design inspiration. You probably haven't seen many of those because they aren't showing up when you search Google or Bing or Yahoo. Something else does. Someone who seems not to even deserve a place on page one of a Google search is, nevertheless, right there on top of thousands of competitors. Why? First have a look at my own website placements for Orange County Photography.

web design: Video On Craigslist | Reloaded Tutorial - 08/29/09 07:10 PM
To simply get the posts in order: Video On Craigslist? Part I Can you place any kind of flash or video on a Craigslist post? The standard answer is "no." But there is still a way to place animated content like you see here (below) on Craigslist. First, you have to convert a limited video to animated GIF format. This can be quite a challenge, especially when initially looking for software to do the job. Secondly, it's a balancing act to stay between compelling content and an overly bloated file that doesn't render fast enough to do any good. Stay

web design: Video On Craigslist? Part IV - Hosting and Embedding Your Animation - 08/29/09 06:44 PM
Craigslist. Some say Craigslist is a dying concept. (another topic) Some say social networking is a waste of time. Some say and some do. This is for those that do and those that can handle a little HTML. Step 1. Host your GIF file. I recommend keeping the animated GIF as small as possible. The one I used in this blog is 8.7 MB. The One in my Craigslist post is only 1.3MB. Performance is always a consideration when you include one if these files. I make the assumption that my audience will be using broadband of some kind. If

web design: Google Voice - By Invitation Only But Worth The Wait - 08/22/09 07:46 PM
How would you like to place a link right on the important part of a website or post that says "Call Me" and the lead clicks the icon, a box appears to put in their phone number and name, then they click and get connected to you with many options for you to choose from like: Call your office phone directlyCall your cell directlyGo to a voicemail you've prepared.Announce to you who's calling and give you the choice to answer or send to voicemail.Block a caller who's a known pest.Hit the Google Voice info and sign-up (invite request) site now and

web design: Just Call Me - Right Now - 08/19/09 01:20 PM
If you can get in (by invitation only but you can request an invite), Google voice has some slick features including custom widgets that answer with a greeting specific to that widget. If you're running multiple departments or just providing multiple services or running multiple campaigns, this feature is quite useful. You can even have a widget go directly to a voice message (like those cheesy audio tours) Voicemail automatically transcribes to text (not perfect, but you can usually get what's meant right away) and sends it to SMS and Email as you choose. What else is Google good at? Oh

web design: Google Search Placement Four Steps Forward and Three Back - 08/19/09 01:06 PM
As I expected, Google repositioned me off page one for Orange County Photography. This is typical, in fact, the usual course for any SEO effort in my experience. A first blush by Google is to place a website, like my photography website, on page one for a keyword search and then after some weighing and balancing in it's machine mind, back to a lower ranking. That process repeats as long as proper SEO is performed until a more established placement is reached. I think it will take a lot of work yet for a term as broad as I chose. There

web design: Orange County Web Design | SEO Writing - 05/25/09 04:09 PM
I'm about to test my own theory. I'm giving an SEO presentation to a small group of agents in a startup office. The agents are all experienced. This startup is not new to the business. It's just a transition from new homes to general sales of both new and existing homes. The agents have to use every tool at their disposal. One of them, Like other clients I've had has already expressed that they hate to write. It's going to be interesting to figure out how I can motivate someone who hates to write to provide content for their own interests.

web design: AR Outside Blogs 100% SEO Optimized? - 05/13/09 01:28 PM
I noticed some of the features cited by Activerain for their "outside blogs" which includes "100% SEO Optimized" Just out of curiosity, I used a popular tool, domaintools, to check on the SEO score of localism which yields an underwhelming 73%. Well that couldn't be it, could it? I checked activerain.com - better at 96%, even better than my own website which stands at 94%, but still not 100%. Then I checked an outside blog one of my clients has which clocked an impressive 97% but that client knows how to do SEO on the fly. By the way, why does

web design: Dealing with this? Getting away from troubleshooting your PC - 05/11/09 11:33 AM
Orange County Web Design by Dave Keys | OC Web Design Dealing with this (an error icon at the end of a perfect install routine)? A mess of windows open on your pc and warnings that it just isn't working (and never will). All you wanted is to install a printer but nooooo! you have to do enough research to write a thesis. Sometimes, competition in computing products causes untold headaches and you can't find a working solution because every vendor is selling the right to not only own and use your product, but to fix it if something goes wrong

web design: Temecula Web Design | Target Site on Page 1 in Three Weeks - 05/05/09 01:11 PM
I managed to get a target site up to page one in just three weeks for the search, Temecula Web Design using what I'll call a Triangulated Blogging Strategy. I used Google's blogger platform to essentially notify Google that a new blog entry was posted in one of my blogs. I didn't backlink to my target page on these posts (Sometimes I posted solo on a blogspot post with a direct backlink). Instead, I only linked to the other blog post. On the target blog posts, I placed backlinks to my target website, http://davekeys.com. This site was just a personal site until

web design: The monetizing of AR - 04/25/09 11:46 AM
Since I have relatively long gaps between incursions into AR, it's quite impossible not to notice the obvious trend toward commercialization on the site. What originally started as a down home sort of community for real estate related business persons has been fully monetized and is starting to feel a little like AOL or any other host of sites who up-sell to the Nth degree. The free side seems balanced on the edge of a knife. One move and it's gone. What's the value to agents? Leads and visibility on search engines. If AR pushes the envelope too far, it will

web design: CoverFlow Menus | Temecula Web Design - 01/27/09 04:31 PM
I've been looking into coverflow menus lately. Most of my web design doesn't really fit the design but Apple style menus have always been attractive to me. For my web design in Temecula, CA, I haven't yet had the opportunity to provide this for a client but research is underway for one in particular. Temecula Web Design Murrieta Web Design by Dave Keys

SEO has been a focus for me lately. It seems everyone is getting on board with attempting to reach the top spot in Google. Strategies abound for this activity and I've employed a few myself. Here's what I've found. People who are willing to write in a journalistic style will succeed better than those who post repeatedly with no style and short rapid-fire posts to blogs and websites. That technique helps but in the end, it's like the energy problem. You have to do everything. Whether you're marketing homes for sale in Fullerton CA or Wichita KS homes you need to

web design: Google didn't make the rounds today - 09/25/08 01:30 AM
Usually, within around 6 hours of creating a page on one of my sites, Google-bot comes crawling through to pick up the new content. I did just that yesterday for West Wichita Homes for Sale near Maize KS where homeowners can pick up seats for their children in the better Maize schools while still living in Wichita city limits. There my page sits waiting for the Great Pumpkin to appear and index it. I guess nobody, including Google engineers, can really tell what a bot will do from day to day... I've made yet another page, hoping Google likes it better.
