We never lose all our flowers in northern California, but the early winter certainly knocks back the variety we normally have. The last few weeks have seen the emergence of flowering trees with pinks and intense white blooms that light up the scenery. Another one of my favorites is the early bulbs. We have some narcissus that we bring inside for their scent, but nothing compares to the daffodil for marking the return of the sun.

Falling for Fixers - Barn and Farmhouse Edition - 02/18/12 12:38 PM
I have been a fan of fixers ever since I learned how to build. Once you understand how much effort goes into putting up a building, it's easy to support adding another thousand hours of labor to make the building shine again. The destructive alternative is to take 8 mechanized hours to eliminate the year's worth of labor it probably took to put the building up in the first place. That doesn't even take into account the sheer waste of materials and additional debris for landfills. So, for me the choice always comes down to a trade off that has to

Reverse Mortgage Eating Her Options - 02/10/12 11:49 AM
A listing agent I trust has a client with a reverse mortgage. A 98 year old client with a home anchoring her in rising water. She needs to be in assisted living, but she won't leave her house until it sells. With bright eyes and a smile she welcomes buyers to her home. The conditions inside are awful, but in an understandable way. She has lost the ability to clean and cook for herself and the house reflects both her past life's glories and her restricted present. The beautiful woman in the World War II era photos wouldn't recognize the squalor
