russian river: Speechless Sunday - Russian River Mouth - 01/15/12 12:55 PM

I've shown some rugged coastal views in recent posts. I wanted to balance those rough images with a true sense of the coast as a life-affirming place. This photo from a few days ago shows the coast at Jenner where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean.  You can see the right side beach covered with birds. In the water on the right is a small cluster of seals who are just hanging out. More seals are visible offshore.

russian river: ActiveRainPhotoBloggerContest - Steelhead Festival Ties Generations - 05/16/11 09:13 PM
The Russian River was famed for steelhead fishing for generations. Over the last few decades, the fishery resource has declined as a century and a half of logging, agriculture, and development have led to soil runoff that clogs streams and makes water conditions unhealthy for fish. Things are improving, however, as people have mobilized to repair stream habitat. Fishery biologists are encouraging the strongest surviving steelhead by raising their offspring in hatcheries. Building and agriculture departments as well as Fish and Game staff are working hard to implement stricter controls on run-off from all sources. The steelhead appear to be responding … (7 comments)

russian river: Russian River Retreat Acreage - 05/14/11 02:46 PM
Sonoma County is a great destination
At just under an hour and a half to San Francisco, Guerneville and the Russian River Valley are popular destinations for weekend visitors and outdoor enthusiasts. Within half an hour you can be abalone diving or kayaking in the surf along the Pacific Coast, mountain bike riding in Anandel State Park, or horseback riding in Armstrong Woods. If you want less sober pursuits, there are dozens of wineries (more)to choose from within a half hour and hundreds within an hour's drive. For the foodies of the west coast, Sonoma County's farmers markets, specialty farms, bakeries, and … (2 comments)

russian river: Speechless Sunday - Muddy Redwood - 04/24/11 11:24 AM
Muddy Redwood
Although it sounds like the name of a west coast blues singer, the Muddy Redwood from the title doesn't sing. In fact, this Muddy Redwood is famous only to the few people who hav hiked on the 87 acre property near Guerneville this redwood lives on.
During a long ago episode, a nearby creek backed up creating a muddy reservoir this tree occupied for a short time. The tree has an old burn scar that is out of the reach of most rains, so the mud has persisted for many years.

russian river: Speechless Sunday - Coho - 11/14/10 02:22 PM

Students observing stocking of Coho salmon in a tributary of the Russian River this week. Preservation of land, streams, and our eco-systems is something that can touch all of us, but is especially meaningful to the students who will become the inheritors of the environment we leave to them.

russian river: When is a fixer too far gone? - 10/15/07 09:31 PM
I wrote about a lovely 1893 fixer in Healdsburg a few days ago. There's no question in my mind that a solid restoration is the best choice for that house and the neighborhood. It's a classy three unit building on a large lot on a street with lots of homes from the same era. There are plenty of period details and the decent construction that has helped it survive for 110 years. A week of scrubbing and painting and some new appliances and window glass and it would be a serviceable rental by Halloween. For a price of $525,000 and close … (0 comments)

russian river: Sonoma County - River view lot in Guerneville - 10/02/07 05:03 PM
Guerneville, California in west Sonoma County is one of the most beautiful locations on the planet. We have redwood forests covering our hills and valleys, vineyards and orchards on the plantable sites, and tourists that flock here in the summer for the beautiful weather and recreation. We're about ninety minutes north of San Francisco, so we're easy to reach.
In the forties and fifties, big bands packed in crowds from San Francisco and Oakland and dancers would roam up and down the strip to dance at each venue. Today the dancing is mainly gone, but we still have jazz and blues festivals … (1 comments)

russian river: Russian River Commute - 08/03/07 12:11 PM
I've got to have one of the most beautiful commutes in the world. I live in Guerneville along the lower stretch of the Russian River. I'm on a hill in the redwoods and jokingly refer to my house as a treehouse since our decks and windows look out into branches forty feet off the ground. I get my choice of four roads to my office in Healdsburg. If I'm in my usual rush, I will take Eastside Road which tracks the Russian River on the Windsor (East) side of the vineyards lining the Russian River Appellation. The vineyards here are commercial … (0 comments)
