mold damage: Water damage that lingers, past the clean up - 07/01/12 02:25 AM
Many people live in homes where water damage has taken place.  As home or property owners, we first think of taking care of the cause of the problem, and then most of us work on cosmetic issues like removing debris or replacing walls or painting.  If you are a do-it-yourself type of person, you probably count yourself lucky if you feel you can do the job yourself.  Whether you do the job yourself or call someone else in to help, however, your primary concern is usually money, especially in these difficult economic times.  If you own commercial or … (0 comments)

mold damage: Does, Where You Live, Matter Regarding Getting Mold/Mildew? - 06/24/12 06:53 AM
One of the most important aspects to consider when it comes to mold is the humidity and moisture in your home.  Those of us who live in the South know that our climate is most often hot and wet.  This produces a great chance that there is excess moisture within our homes, and anywhere there’s a high level of moisture, there is likely to be mold.  Of course, the logical thing to do is to control the amount of moisture in the home.  The amount of moisture required to produce mold, however, may not be great, and … (1 comments)

mold damage: Familiar with the term Aspergillius? - 05/13/12 02:49 PM
Have you ever heard of Aspergillus Penicillium?  It sounds like penicillin has been used as an antibiotic since the 1900s, and they are somewhat related. The truth is, however, that it’s a dangerous type of mold that has been found in homes in many places.  Since there are hundreds of types of mold and some of them are helpful, you need to be able to distinguish among them to see whether or not you have a problem.  You should also remember that mold removal and remediation vary depending on many factors. Most people have mold checked out after they spot … (1 comments)

mold damage: Mold Could Change Your Life - 04/16/12 04:35 AM
I was just watching one of my favorite shows on TV when I heard a singer remark that his career had to be put on hold because of a mold problem that caused him to have a constant illness.  After the problem was found and the mold removed, his health improved, and he was able to continue with his career.  Stories like this are very common.  Some of them may even appear too farfetched to believe. That’s one of the problems you face when dealing with mold.  People just don’t seem to be sure about where to find it, what to … (1 comments)

mold damage: The hidden dangers that often accompany water damage - 03/28/12 12:29 PM
Water damage is a fairly common subject and often not taken as seriously as it should be. Water damage can start as small as a pipe leak or be as big as a flood, either way, the damages need to be taken care of quickly and by a professional. If the proper precautions are not taken and repairs are not made within 24-48 hours, the damage can affect both your home and your health.
Water damage is not always visible. It can be hidden underneath carpet or behind walls, all while it is destroying important structural elements and creating mold, bacteria, and … (2 comments)

mold damage: Is A Mold Inspection, Really Worth The Money? You Decide - 02/23/12 07:45 AM
Is mold a topic that is worth losing sleepover? With so many “professional” opinions that are floating around the internet, this is a question that has a lot of people divided. Some authorities on this subject feel that mold is a topic that has been hyped up for the sake of marketing, and poses no real long-term effects to people who are exposed to it. Yet scientific research shows that certain strands can produce mycotoxins, which are in fact highly carcinogenic to human beings. Whatever side of this debate you decide to align yourself with, keep in mind that mold, as … (0 comments)

mold damage: Allergies or Mold Infestation? - 11/02/11 07:28 PM
Coughing, wheezing, and runny nose? Is it time to go buy a bottle of Benadryl for those pesky allergy symptoms, or could these be indicators of a much more severe problem? Symptoms of mold exposure can appear as nothing more than simple, everyday, allergy symptoms, but the long term effects could be much more severe, and in some cases even life threatening. Mold can exist virtually everywhere in both our indoor and outdoor environments, and because the symptoms of exposure appear as nothing more than allergies, it can be difficult to identify unless you are familiar with the other signs of … (2 comments)

mold damage: Unemployment...REALLY?! - 07/26/11 08:32 AM
Hey everybody! It's a rainy day here in Charlotte, NC and I have nothing better to do but sit here at the box and complain and whine....This is Elizabeth Aycock! Friend, coworker and confidant to David Snell of Executive Restoration!
As I said the other day...My daughter and I went off to the mall in seach of a new book bag for her first grade year! As we spent a painful, but fun, three and a half hours alongside my mother, searching through store after store...after store for that perfect bag, I couldn't help but notice something that hit close to … (12 comments)

mold damage: Do Realtors and Banks really want inspections to a home performed? - 03/05/11 10:00 AM
Do Realtors suggest to the would be buyer to have a home inspection and a mold inspection perfomred before a price is offered to the seller?
I was just trying to take a little survey here to see if all Realtors recommend a home inspection, a mold inspection and a termite inspection be done before a price is offered to the seller.
As a realtor, do you think that the above inspections are important for the would be buyer or does having the above inspections cause you problems with selling the home?
In the 24 years that I have been in … (6 comments)

mold damage: The Deadly Creeper - The Dangers of Mold - 02/23/11 02:31 AM
The Dangers of Mold
Mold is a sneaky thing that can creep into the tiniest of crevices where it will fester, unnoticed for years. Molds multiply very quickly, so even if it is left for a couple days, it can start to spread. Not only is that incredibly gross, it’s also quite dangerous. As mold grows, it produces a variety of myotoxins including trichothecenes, beta glucans, nitric oxides and aflatoxins, which is why it can affect people in so many different ways. Mold can cause a lot a health issues, ranging from mild allergic reactions to serious diseases.

Never Do This - Always Do That - Too Many Opposing Opinions Make for one Confused ActiveRainer I've only been on ActiveRain for about 4 months now but it seems like one minute I see a blog about how to do something great, the next someone else is giving advice the other way. I have seen this on SEO, Realtors, Inspectors, Stagers and the like. It doesn't matter what it is. I'll read a post that tells why you should market to your area, then the next says forget the area, market to your target audience. SEO is all over the … (32 comments)

Black Splotches? Funky Smell? Teenagers Bedroom or Health Concern?
At the sake of sounding like an alarmist, most homes have some type of mold and most is relatively harmless but some can actual kill. Don't believe me? It's been known to happen! Consider the verdict still being debated on actress Brittany Murphy and her husband on whether toxic black mold in their home was actually the killer or the cause of something that killed them both.
Of course not all mold kills and many times our immune systems are strong enough to endure quite a bit, but there are hundreds … (8 comments)

mold damage: After the Mold Has Invaded! Questions to Ask Your Mold Specialist (Part 2 of 2) - 02/06/11 12:40 AM
Questions to Ask Your Mold Inspector
My last blog about what to look for if you suspect you have mold in your house gave the definitions of three types of mold - not the kind found in your refrigerator!
But now what do you do if you find mold bad enough that you have to call in the big guns to get it taken care of?
First of all, find a certified mold inspector to handle it. Most carpet, or cleaning services don't have the means or the resources to really clean up a toxic mold situation. They would … (7 comments)

mold damage: What is Mold? Do You or Your Client Really Know What to Look For? (Part 1 of 2) - 02/06/11 12:20 AM
What is Mold? - Do You or Your Client Really Know?
It came from the deep. That dark, growing, black ooze that won't seem to go away no matter how much you scrub it. Mold, that nasty little creature that grows with a vengeance! Left untreated, this monster can cause major damage in homes if you are not sure what you've got or how to deal with it properly. If you have never had your home inspected or it's been a while, mold can seep in where you really don't want it to. Mold damage can not only affect your home … (8 comments)

What to do when you have mold in the house
You go and open your kitchen cabinets or drawers and find a black fuzzy looking alien growing on the walls, And no, this isn't your kids science experiment. So what do you do now? It really depends on what you are dealing with as to how to tackle the problem.
If the mold is small enough, say just the inside walls of a cabinet you can probably have the problem fixed on your own in a short amount of time. If this is the case you will first need to … (6 comments)

Meeting People in Devastating Circumstances is No One's Cup of Tea But sooner or later we all eventually meet up with someone that may have had some tragedy, some set back or catastrophe in their life and we may not know how to handle it. As a home restoration specialist, it's my job to restore something back to the way it was. This is much more in-depth than a simple repair. Typically by the time I get to the job, the damage has well run it's course and it's either clean up and start all over or try to piece back … (2 comments)

mold damage: Should You Get an Infra-Red Scan Before you Buy that New Home? - 01/10/11 01:35 PM
Should You Get an Infra-Red Scan Before you Buy that New Home? Some info on why it is important to have an infra-red scan performed before you buy your new home. Finding problems before you buy your home is your Ace Card and your home inspector as well as your certified mold inspection company or certified mold re-mediator should be able to offer you an infra-red scan to the home you are thinking about purchasing. By investing in an infra-red scan prior to purchase the homeowner can experience lower maintenance costs or a reduction in major surprise repairs. The inspector can … (2 comments)

mold damage: Pre-Inspections ~ Should Home Sellers Have One Done Prior to Listing? - 01/05/11 06:09 AM
Pre-Inspections - Should Home Sellers Have One Done Prior to Listing? This is definitely up for debate. Some agents say yes it's a good idea, some say no. What are the arguments on each side? As a home inspection specialist I would hope the agent and the seller would make that decision for themselves. But let's throw out a couple scenarios first. A) Seller is working on a short sale and knows the property needs work. There may have been water damage in the past but doesn't really know the damage nor do they care. Does the agent simply tell them … (3 comments)
