bc: Victoria's Victoria - The background to our Capital City - 08/29/11 11:33 AM

The city of Victoria was named after Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901.  The distant Pacific shore of North America, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island grew and transformed as the young 18 year old Queen was also growing into her role.

                        Photo Benjamin Madison
Queen Victoria had a secluded childhood, dominated by a strong mother, but once on the throne she refused any further influence from her family. At the age of 18 she married Prince Albert, her German cousin and enjoyed a very happy marriage, producing nine children, before he … (1 comments)

bc: Which Would You Rather Be & Why - A Seller Agent or a Buyer Agent? - 07/29/11 08:58 PM

In addition, covering both ends of a transaction brings challenges ...

so, let's hear about the drawbacks and the successes from both aspects of the … (15 comments)

bc: VICTORIA DAY IN VICTORIA, BC - 05/18/11 04:56 PM
Victoria Day (Monday May 23 this year) is a statutory holiday in Canada, except for the Atlantic Provinces (why not the Atlantic provinces? I don't really know!)

This coming long weekend (May 22/23) is a lasting reminder of our colonial history. It falls on the weekend before Memorial Day in the United States.
Victoria Day is officially the Sovereign's birthday. It dates back to 1845 with Queen Victoria's birthday. After the Queen died, Parliament established May 23 or 24, as a legal holiday.
Since 1952 the celebration of Victoria has made the event the first long weekend … (2 comments)

This will be my 4th year as Santa to a large group of children, my son being one of them, at their Christmas party.  I'm wondering if this year, as he is now 6 years old, whether he'll recognise me in my outfit and beard!
Here is last year's photo - Note Santa's helper (my teenage niece, looking very happy doing her job!).
We don't have snow in Victoria tonight, but maybe it will appear by Christmas Eve....

What a great time of year for all the little kids.

bc: What's the Difference Between a Farrier and a Blacksmith? - 10/10/10 04:06 PM
My young son has recently begun riding lessons and this week I mentioned to my parents (who are originally from the UK) that the Farrier was due to arrive at the riding school. My Mom said " We always used to call him the Blacksmith or 'Smithy' when we were young."
So, that became the discussion as to the difference between the two terms, and here's what I found ...
A Blacksmith makes and repairs things made of iron or steel. The village blacksmith repaired much of the farming items, but in "the olden days" (Mom!!), the blacksmith was also required … (6 comments)
