british columbia: Victoria's Victoria - The background to our Capital City - 08/29/11 11:33 AM
The city of Victoria was named after Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901. The distant Pacific shore of North America, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island grew and transformed as the young 18 year old Queen was also growing into her role. Photo Benjamin Madison Queen Victoria had a secluded childhood, dominated by a strong mother, but once on the throne she refused any further influence from her family. At the age of 18 she married Prince Albert, her German cousin and enjoyed a very happy marriage, producing nine children, before he

british columbia: First Nations Island Towns and Villages in BC - 09/05/10 11:04 AM
Phil Leng, of Kirkland, WA gave me an idea for my Blog this morning. He wrote about Native Indian place names in Washington State. I want to share with you a fascinating island called Village Island that housed a now-abandoned community called Mamalilaculla, here in beautiful British Columbia. Located in the Broughton islands, Mamalilaculla, which was originally built on a midden, is an abandoned First Nations community with the remains of an old totem pole rotting away on the ground. Bear scat is often evident near the bushes and the last time I was there (as a teenager) some of the

british columbia: My Charity - AUTISM - 02/24/10 10:00 AM
Most Real Estate agents seem to contribute to a charity and mine is Autism. Autism affects 1 out of every 110 children and 1 in 70 boys. The numbers are growing and are far higher than we ever previously thought. Now, more than ever, we need answers. Medicare is not currently available for autism treatment anywhere in Canada despite a government run health plan that is supposedly universal. It is unacceptable that children with physical disabilities have access to government health insurance coverage, yet children with a mental or neurological disability do not share in this important social safety net

british columbia: Active Mist ... in Active Pass ... on Active Rain! - 11/09/08 10:32 PM
Today there was an active mist and beautiful sailing day out here on the Pacific West Coast. The British Columbia ferries sail through a section of water called Active Pass, which lies between two of the Gulf Islands - Mayne Island and Galiano Island (midway between Vancouver and Victoria). Just thought you might like to hear about our very own Active Pass in beautiful British Columbia on our very own Active Rain Blog.

british columbia: Victoria is Remembering the Past, Hoping for the Future - Poppies on November 11th - 11/05/08 10:04 AM
In Victoria, BC, starting November 5th and until November 11th, from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm the Royal British Columbia Museum, in downtown Victoria, is hosting a week of Remembrance. Featured are community displays and Veterans' talks. There will be a special Remembrance Carillon recital on Tuesday, Nov. 11th at 12 noon. The significance of the Poppies that are worn during this week dates back to the worst battlefields of Flanders during World War 1, and to Canadian military physician, poet and author John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields". I found a copy online: by: John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the

british columbia: What Does It Mean? Active Rain??? Good Grief!!! - 10/24/08 10:35 AM
Earlier this week I was telling a retired gentleman, from Victoria, about Blogs. When I told him about Active Rain he said "Good grief . What on earth does that name mean"? And, to be honest, I didn't have an answer. Now I'm sure that somewhere on this AR site there is an answer to his question, but so far I haven't found it. Is anyone going to enlighten me? Please! Victoria, BC in rain and sunrise Cheers! David

british columbia: Sidney Spit is a Little Paradise and Why I Love Victoria, BC - 09/08/08 08:56 PM
Sidney Spit, on Sidney Island, and only accessible by boat, is a marvellous short 4 km sail from the town of Sidney, near Victoria on Vancouver Island. Yesterday was a beautiful sunny warm day and my family and I sailed over to Sidney Spit. We anchored off the island and took our dinghy to the long sandy beach where my young son had so much fun wading into the extremely cold water, and then drying off on the warm soft sand. The Coast Salish Natives used to have a summer camp on the island but it is now a British Columbia Park

british columbia: Sales Soften while Prices Remain Stable in Victoria, BC - 07/10/08 10:43 PM
In his July 2, 2008 report on the real estate market, the President of the Victoria Real Estate Board, Tony Joe, comments on this month's real estate statistics, saying that modest decline in sales from May to June have followed a pattern similar to that of last year. The overall average price of single family homes in the Greater Victoria area in June was $580,104, with the six month average being $600,740. These figures are compared to the six month average in January, which was just over $586,00. Thus, Joe says, "we see that prices have remained remarkably stable this year."

british columbia: ** Living on an Island ...** - 06/16/08 10:10 AM
I came from an Island (Britain), and have lived on an Island (Vancouver Island, BC) since I was 9 years old, but the Island I like to visit is a tiny one here in British Columbia ... Portland Island. Access is only by boat or kayak and it's located between Salt Spring Island and Sidney on Vancouver Island. There are 10 kilometres of walking trails around Portland Island and it really is a wonderful place to visit. Although now uninhabited it was the site of a First Nations' village, and Hawaiian immigrants who settled there in the 1880's. Consequently, there are fruit trees,

british columbia: Who is Moving To Victoria, BC? - 05/27/08 08:58 PM
Victoria, BC the jewel of Vancouver Island and located on the southern tip, boasts the mildest climate in Canada, having pleasantly warm summers and mild winters. The Pacific Ocean is at your doorstep ... what better place to live? Selling Real Estate in Victoria has become my passion, and it is where I meet people from all over North America as well as those from Europe. Most overseas clients come from the UK. While the rest of Canada sees a record influx of immigrants from Asia and the Middle East, Greater Victoria continues to attract its traditionally strong base of people

british columbia: Tall Ships in Victoria, BC June 26- 29, 2008 - 05/26/08 03:24 PM
The City of Victoria has an exciting maritime history. Victoria's Inner Harbour, on Thursday, June 26, is the venue for the spectacular Parade of Sail, which kicks off the Victoria Tall Ships Festival. There will be at least 24 Tall Ships with their sails billowing and according to estimates from the festival director they are aiming to attract 40,000 paid visitors. Ships that have been used in movies, the ' Bounty' (a 54-metre sailing vessel), the 'Nina' (a replica of the 15th century ship of Christopher Columbus) and 'Lady Washington' (112 ft. replica of the privateer sailed during the American Revolution, and used

british columbia: Victoria moving house - a wake up call at 2 a.m. - 04/25/08 08:53 PM
How would you like to be woken up at 2 a.m. to see a house moving across your bedroom window? This 1980's house was moved overnight from my neighbourhood on our small side road in Victoria, BC. The moving company had to chop down branches and move hydro wires en route to their destination in Sidney, BC. These days many houses in Victoria are being lifted to gain an ocean view or removed completely, to be rebuilt allowing a better view. In Canada, Vancouver is still the most expensive place to live,
