victoria: Victoria's Victoria - The background to our Capital City - 08/29/11 11:33 AM
The city of Victoria was named after Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901. The distant Pacific shore of North America, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island grew and transformed as the young 18 year old Queen was also growing into her role. Photo Benjamin Madison Queen Victoria had a secluded childhood, dominated by a strong mother, but once on the throne she refused any further influence from her family. At the age of 18 she married Prince Albert, her German cousin and enjoyed a very happy marriage, producing nine children, before he

victoria: British Columbia Day on Cowichan Lake! Outdoor Enthusiasts' Summer Public Holiday! - 08/01/11 09:13 PM
It was a gorgeous hot sunny British Columbia Day (August 1) on Cowichan Lake today and I took a day off work to take full advantage of the slower paced life around the area with a bit of faster life on the water! Great water skiing on Cowichan Lake. The little town of Lake Cowichan (pop. 3,118), is located at the eastern end of Cowichan Lake, a spectacular region of natural beauty and eco-tourism, with camping, hiking fishing, swimming, water-skiing and boating of all sorts. Everywhere was alive with all age groups this long weekend. It's a great recreational

victoria: The Challenges, Camaraderie, Beauty of the Boats & Vitality of Victoria ... - 05/28/11 11:02 AM
THE SWIFTSURE begin today, Saturday, May 28 The Swiftsure International Yacht Race is always a great weekend to watch and track the boats online. Photos courtesy Gary Woodburn The Swiftsure Race is named because the Swiftsure Bank is the furthest point of the race. The HMS Swiftsure was a Royal Navy boat of the 1870 - 1908 period, however, the earliest ship of that name was was involved in action against the Spanish Armada in 1588! The first recorded sailboat racing in the Victoria area took place in the late 1850's between boats of the Royal Navy and the early colonists.

victoria: VICTORIA DAY IN VICTORIA, BC - 05/18/11 04:56 PM
Victoria Day (Monday May 23 this year) is a statutory holiday in Canada, except for the Atlantic Provinces (why not the Atlantic provinces? I don't really know!) This coming long weekend (May 22/23) is a lasting reminder of our colonial history. It falls on the weekend before Memorial Day in the United States. Victoria Day is officially the Sovereign's birthday. It dates back to 1845 with Queen Victoria's birthday. After the Queen died, Parliament established May 23 or 24, as a legal holiday. Since 1952 the celebration of Victoria has made the event the first long weekend

victoria: My Mug! And the Royal Wedding! - 04/19/11 11:16 AM
With the Royal Wedding looming fast I was wondering if my "mug" is worth anything! Ha! Ha! My Mum loves the Royal Family and has kept these mugs and a little book of matches!! for me and my sisters since the wedding of Diana and Charles in 1981. Recently I lined them up and not really being a "Collector" I wondered aloud if they might be worth "cashing in". Horrors!! "Never!! Keep them for your own offspring!! " Ah well, maybe in another 25 years I might make some money on my mug during the lulls in the real estate market!

Broadmead and Cordova Bay: The village of Cordova Bay is a family area, with a mixture of newer and older homes, and a small village-type strip along scenic Cordova Bay. With its long sandy beach, and located east of Elk & Beaver Lakes and north of Broadmead, this quaint community is on the northern edge of the City of Victoria. There are three Golf Clubs in the area, Royal Oak GC, Cordova Bay GC and The Ridge GC. Nearby Elk Lake is a popular training area for Canada’s world class rowing teams, and is surrounded by a 10 km hiking

victoria: CORDOVA BAY Old Cottages are Slowly Being Replaced by Million Dollar Luxury Homes - 09/23/10 07:12 PM
My neighbourhood, Cordova Bay in Saanich East, boasts one of the best sandy and pebble beaches in Victoria. The beach has a number of public accesses from the road yet is still quiet and peaceful with a fantastic view of the Gulf Islands and Mt. Baker in the distance. Some of the original 'seaside' cottages are still evident but are slowly being replaced with million dollar luxury homes which are situated right on the waterfront. If you would like more information on property in the Cordova Bay area please contact me. I am more than happy to

victoria: My Charity - AUTISM - 02/24/10 10:00 AM
Most Real Estate agents seem to contribute to a charity and mine is Autism. Autism affects 1 out of every 110 children and 1 in 70 boys. The numbers are growing and are far higher than we ever previously thought. Now, more than ever, we need answers. Medicare is not currently available for autism treatment anywhere in Canada despite a government run health plan that is supposedly universal. It is unacceptable that children with physical disabilities have access to government health insurance coverage, yet children with a mental or neurological disability do not share in this important social safety net
