Hardly a day passes without an email or a Facebook message asking me:  "what's the best Smartphone for REALTORS?"  In turn, I normally ask them the same questions: "do you use Supra?  If so, how important is opening the lockbox? What type of contact management system do you have? And, are you willing to take some time and learn a new phone?"

One out of five of the agents I work with decide they don't want a ‘fob' for the lockbox and their contact management system prevents them from getting the smartest Smartphone.  No problems -- go to eBay and buy a Treo 680 for my AT&T and T-Mobile friends or a Treo 755 for the other carriers and live happily ever after or the next 2 to 3 years whichever comes first.

Now for the other four out of five inquiries, I have a standard answer:  based on your carrier, I would look at the Droid and the iPhone.  Now some of these people will not let it go at that and respond with "why".  This throws me back to fatherhood and my boys asking why and me telling them because I said so and if you ask again you're in trouble, but I know that won't work here.

Well let's start with the web access. If you haven't seen what the web looks like on a Droid or iPhone, get somebody to show you.  That alone should motivate you to look more at what we call the "Super Phones" which according to experts includes the iPhone, Droid, Nexus One and Pre.  Please don't blame me if your phone isn't on the list. That's what the experts say.

The next consideration in my book is apps.  What are apps? In the old days, we called them programs and today you can find an app for about anything in life.  I love it in a classroom when somebody asks me a question -- my new standard response is "we have an app for that."  You name it, there is an app from shopping to banking, from getting in shape, to finding a bar we have an app for that.  Does your choice in a Super Phone have plenty of apps?  Apple has about 285,000, and the Droid somewhere between 85,000 and 100,000 depending on who you believe -- and finally the poor Pre, about 4,000 but just wait until HP gets to cranking!

 Consumers are discovering what these Super Phones can do in mass numbers. Check out second quarter retail sales;

Before you take this pie chart as gospel, let me explain a few things. Notice the "Sold at Retail," which means this does not include corporate or enterprise purchases.  Some companies will buy a bunch of phones to be given out to employees which would slightly change the chart.  Another factor with this chart is that the iPhone 4G was only on the market 7 days of the second quarter and they ran out of phones, so next quarter should look a little different.

The pie chart does show what consumers just like you and I are doing when it comes to buying Smartphones.  I do follow market trends and market share all the time. It helps me understand what I should be focusing on when preparing presentations.  Rather than putting up last quarter's pie chart, let me break it down for you;

Operating System       1st Quarter       2nd Quarter      Market Share + (-)

Blackberry                         35%                  28%                      - 7%

Apple                                28%                  22%                      - 7%

Droid                                  9%                   33%                      + 24%

WebOS (Palm)                   4%                    4%                     No Change

Again please consider we are only looking at sales for the second quarter and total market share from first quarter.  My point is to look at what are consumers doing today and how it will eventually affect market share.

So what's the hottest Smartphone out there?  The one you will use, the one you will take the time to learn, the one that helps your career and finally the one that will improve your life!

About a month ago I announced my relationship with Howard & Friends and released a reworked agent and mobile phone friendly Customer Relationship Management program.  So far so good we have agents from across the country joining us and we are getting better at helping them come on board.  So many come to us from other to be unnamed systems very aggravated and looking for help we are very good at helping rid of the demons.  Don't forget one of the strongest points of our CRM it works with Outlook which of course was one of my main points I wanted.  Unlike others that punish you for leaving we make it easy which might not be good for us but a great point for you.  Our program works on any internet capable Smartphone.

Amanda Tester and Teresa Mitchell are heading up this division for me and doing a great job.  We are now offering regular scheduled meeting online that you can attend ask questions and learn more at your leisure.  We are small enough to develop a relationship with you but have the backing of a large CRM to serve you.

Take a look at us I feel strongly we have a great product to support your business without charging you an arm and a leg.  We have put a special page up to support our efforts on educating you about our products and services www.otcs.com/GRT/dbetts.htm

Last week this time I was finishing up 3 days in Central Arkansas and wanted to share a few personal things.  Arkansas was one of my first state conventions 9 years ago and have spoke or attended 8 of the 9 years since.  I have made many friends in the region and when they pop up on my calendar it's one of those events I look forward to visiting with so many buddies.

But there is one group I must tell you about, Searcy, AR.  Searcy is a small association located about 50 miles north of Little Rock which first hired me in 2003 and has hired me many times since.  The reason they are so special to me is they are the smallest group that hires me regularly.  The first time I spoke for them they had a total membership of 116 and we had 76 of the members attend.  Last week we had 40 of their members attend a full day and we are already planning a return in October.  It's almost not work going there and no I'm not going to wave my speaking fee but thanks to a group special people I never eat alone and have stayed with Deb and Robert even in the cabin at the river.  I think I could stand at the door as folks come in and shake hands and call most of them by name.  Thanks Searcy for making me feel at home in your very friendly town.

It looks like Amanda with CARMLS, Libby with LRRA and maybe a new player Tracey with the local CRS Chapter are working on my return and of course Searcy wants in on it also.  Amanda sent me an email last week saying I might be in the region for a week which is fine with me!

Well it has started many of you that have been following my "Battle of the Cell Carriers" articles or have attended one of my presentations in the past 6 months I warned this day was coming.  AT&T has announced data limits and packages on all new service starting June 7Th.  Many of you think well no big deal I am with another carrier "No Big Deal" well sorry to pop your bubble but what one does they all will do in time.  Now before you panic let's look at what AT&T is doing and how much it cost.

First in my humble option this is a very easy test balloon by the carriers to get us to stop thinking unlimited and will tighten up on us as time passes.  Okay what is AT&T doing;

200MB plan for just $15 a month

Your question should be what's 200MB in my world?  According to PC magazine 200MB of data gives you the capability to send and receive 1000 e-mail messages (no attachments) and 150 e-mails with attachments, view 400 Web pages, post 50 photos on social media sites, and watch 20 minutes of streaming video.  Now remember you can save mobile data by using WI-FI in your home, office or anyplace available conserving your 200MB.  See they are retraining us to think that way and it will work!

2GB plan for just $25 a month

Many of you will not use this much but there is a heck of a jump between 200MB and 2GB which I am sure is a marketing plan.  Most AT&T users have unlimited data for $30 a month so the company can save you $5 to $15 a month with this change but guess what you are going to be in a LIMITED Plan maybe it's high but now they can start herding us in the direction they want.

This will effect tethering, Skype and many other things we were thinking about with our Super Phones but you should not worry.  I would think 95% of you never go over the 2GB limit so this first volley will not harm us.  My target date is 2012 when at the current rate we outgrow the network this is the start of reeling us in to push that date out a few years.

I could go on for hours about all kinds of effects this will have on development and use of mobile cloud technology but another day!

There's an app for that!  I am beginning to think I use those four words more then any other four words in my life.  We are in the middle of an explosion of applications for Smartphones and no one person has the time to review them all.  Take a few minutes and visit the iPhone or Droid apps store and you will be amazed at what's out there to help with your business and life.  Oh you need to go back tomorrow and look again iPhone is adding 559 apps a day not sure about the Droid and other platforms but I think it's safe to say about a thousand per day.

Life has changed from how do I repeat an event on my Treo to I want to build a nuclear reactor is there an app for that?  Folks the bar has been raised and we all have been a part of the change in the way we do business.  I meet people when I am out speaking that I just stare in amazement at how much they are getting from their Smartphone.

With the changes and apps happening so fast we need a clearing house or a central point to wade through the apps and find what really helps us.  I am not volunteering to look at each app but together we can find what apps are available to help us live our life and help us with our career.

Since 2008 I have hosted an online group dedicated to Smartphones which is free to join.  I am proud to say I have some of the best people available who belong to the group and freely give their time and advice.  Whether you want to join in and add your two cents or do like some and just read what others are saying join in!

I started a new thread in this group "Smartphone App Sharing" for agents to share what apps they are using and maybe ask for help finding an app.  The more people participating the better for us all.

To view my outSmart Your Smartphone group, go to http://outSmartYourSmartphone.RealTown.com.  Note that in order to participate in my outSmart Your Smartphone group, you must be a member of RealTown.com--  To Join (it's free), go to http://www.RealTown.com/signup and complete the sign up form.  If you are already a member, make sure you are logged in.  Next, visit my group at http://outSmartYourSmartphone.RealTown.com and click the Join Group link just below the group description.  Choose your subscription preferences and you are done.  It's that easy.
