ga: FALL IN HICKORY HILL , WATKINSVILLE, GA - 11/02/11 03:33 AM

After a really long, hot summer, we have been rewarded with an unusually long fall.  Some years it seems that we go straight from summer into winter with just a few days of real fall, but this year it cooled off right after Labor Day and we have had a long stretch of cool, mostly dry weather.  The trees in my neighborhood, Hickory Hill, have popped with color in the last few days.  It reminds me of the song, "Let's go out in a blaze of glory".

ga: BIKE RIDE WITH ME IN SOUTH OCONEE COUNTY, GA - 08/21/10 02:50 AM
On my usual early Saturday morning bike ride, I leave my neighborhood, cutting through another neighborhood to avoid the all-too-busy Simonton Bridge Rd.  Just before going up the loooong hill, I see some neighborhood deer grazing in a yard.  (OK, you have to look hard here).

Riding through the outskirts of Watkinsville, I cross over the Greensboro Hwy and down Morrison Street where I pass by B Elder working in his large garden where he sells his produce.

Turning south on Colham Ferry Rd, there are usually a few fishermen trying their luck at Bell Lake.

ga: Scull Shoals Trail - 08/23/09 05:57 AM

While riding at Scull Shoals the other day on my friend Linda's Spotted Saddle Horse, Jake, I remembered that I never posted the pictures that I took there back in the spring.
Scull Shoals is an abandoned town located on the Oconee River in Greene Co, GA,  only minutes south of Athens, GA.  More on the town another time.
We rode the horse trail in the Oconee National Forest.  Part of the trail leads to the Indian mounds and the whole trail is also great for hiking.

ga: A History Ramble Around Georgia, Part II - 08/02/09 08:31 AM

To follow my previous post, we'll continue on the recent history ramble around Georgia.  Following the Warrenton Highway from Sparta, we entered Glascock County and made a couple of turns to find the little bygone town of Mitchell, GA, where we spread our picnic out on the tables on the lawn of the old depot.
After feeling refreshed from lunch, we visited the town museum there in the old depot.  The local people have done a great job in displaying many items from Mitchell's history and farm life from an earlier time.

We were told that on the … (5 comments)

ga: Crime in Rural Oconee County - 07/16/09 12:30 AM
This is what I love about living in a rural county -
In yesterday's police blotter there was an item about a rogue billy goat, apparently trying to impress the two nannies that were with him, broke the glass in 2 church doors on a rural Oconee County, GA church.  He also damaged 2 windows for a total of about $1000 in damage.  No one claimed the goats so they were left in the custody of the church's preacher.
Hmm, wonder if they are having a bar-b-cue this weekend?

ga: Spring in Athens, GA - 03/12/09 02:45 AM
One of my favorite things about early spring in Athens, GA is driving home down South Milldege Ave. through the UGA farms.  Starting around the first of February the ewes in the pasture start lambing and seeing the little lambs gamboling around the newly green pasture always brings a smile to my face.
On a recent afternoon I stopped to try to capture the frolicking lambs but they were not going to cooperate.  However, I did manage to take a few pictures to share of the lambs with their mamas to share with everyone.

ga: A day on the trail - 08/22/08 08:27 AM
One morning this week I sneeked off to ride horses with a couple of friends at Watson Mill State Park in Oglethorpe Co. (near Athens, GA).  And Yes, we did drive the truck and trailer through the bridge.

What was really impressive was how low the river was at that point from our continuing 3 year drought.
Usually, there are beautiful shoals where people like to play on the rocks, etc.  The river was reduced to a small trickle and the usual riverbed looked like a beach.

ga: Hummingbirds - 08/14/08 09:31 AM
It seems that we've had more hummingbirds here in Oconee Co., GA this year than ever before!  No one seems to know why some years are better than others, but these little birds are eating us out of house and home!  They are eating over a quart of food each day!!

We've found that the Perky Pet feeders with the LARGE flowers and perches are the hummingbirds' favorite feeders.  Our birds seem to be lazy and like sitting down to eat.  They remain at the feeder longer (unless being chased away).

ga: Paul's Giant Tomatoes - 08/14/08 09:16 AM

Here in Oconee County, GA, Paul has been growing some heirloom tomatoes by the name of "Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifters" for several years now, and these are the biggest he has ever grown!  One is 1 3/4 lbs and the other is about 1 1/2 lbs!  There's quite a story about the name - it seems that Charlie owned a radiator shop in NC back around 1929 and developed these tomatoes.  People drove for 100 miles to buy the plants at $1.00 each, whence he was able to pay off his mortgage.  We thought you might like to see these!
