oconee county: SANTA & WAGON HAY BALES - 12/21/11 04:24 AM
Oconee County is still mostly rural, which gives it it's charm.  There is a creative Santa & wagon made of hay bales out on Colham Ferry Rd., placed by Jeff Bell.

Don't ask me how he got them there!

Here's a close up of Rudolph, who has a red light on his nose that shows up at night.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from here in Oconee County, GA!

oconee county: NEIGHBORHOOD HONEY PRODUCTION IN OCONEE COUNTY, GA - 09/16/11 03:23 AM

Recently, a couple of our Hickory Hill Subdivision neighbors invited us over for a "honey extracting party".  They keep bees in their backyards and also take their hives to the north Georgia mountains for a time each summer for the sour wood honey.  They called us over a couple of weeks ago to witness (and help with) the honey extracting.  It was an interesting process and a lot of fun (until you got to the 100th frame).  There are quite a few backyard bee keepers here in Oconee County, GA.

After removing the frames from the … (2 comments)

oconee county: Yes, there is still cotton grown in Oconee County, GA - 09/13/11 04:34 AM

A field of cotton off of Hwy 53 in western Oconee County, GA

Although there isn't as much farming going on in Oconee County, GA as there used to by, the Dickens Family still plants some cotton each year.   If you drive down GA 53 between Watkinsville and US 78, you will see several fields of cotton ready to be picked.  There is also a field off US 441 south of Watkinsville at Bishop.  Many years ago there was a lot cotton grown and several local gins but only a few acres are planted … (3 comments)

oconee county: EXTRAORDINARY DAYLILIES IN SOUTH OCONEE COUNTY, GA - 06/06/11 01:27 PM

This morning we drove down to south Oconee Co. to see a friend's daylilies.  We had heard that he had a lot of them and many different varities, including a number that his mother had bred.  In spite of the heat and very dry weather, they were awesome!

These were just too beautiful not to share with anyone who appreciates them.

oconee county: SPRING EVENTS AROUND OCONEE COUNTY, GA - 04/29/11 05:35 AM

There are so many activities in the Spring in Oconee County, Ga that it's hard to keep up with it all!
First up this weekend is the 2011 Oconee Relay for Life held at the Oconee County High School track.  It begins tonight, April 29 at 6:30 and runs until 8:00 in the morning.  This is always a huge event here with many groups participating.  Traditionally, the Oconee Relay raises the most money for a community of our size.  The Survivor and Caregiver Lap is always touching and seeing the large number of luminaries is overwhelming.

Then the Oconee … (0 comments)

oconee county: BIKE RIDE WITH ME IN SOUTH OCONEE COUNTY, GA - 08/21/10 02:50 AM
On my usual early Saturday morning bike ride, I leave my neighborhood, cutting through another neighborhood to avoid the all-too-busy Simonton Bridge Rd.  Just before going up the loooong hill, I see some neighborhood deer grazing in a yard.  (OK, you have to look hard here).

Riding through the outskirts of Watkinsville, I cross over the Greensboro Hwy and down Morrison Street where I pass by B Elder working in his large garden where he sells his produce.

Turning south on Colham Ferry Rd, there are usually a few fishermen trying their luck at Bell Lake.

Farther … (2 comments)

oconee county: YOU KNOW YOU LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN WHEN THE NEWS IS: - 05/20/10 08:53 AM
OK, I couldn't resist blogging about a news item in the May 20 edition of the Oconee Enterprise, one of Watkinsville's weeklies.  It seems that the main courtroom has been bugged - not with electronic listening devices but with - yes - CHIGGERS!  Judge Lawton Stephens was complaining about being bitten while judging, so the courtroom had to be fumigated to get rid of the chiggers!  The court was back in business the next day.
Anyone not familiar with chiggers:  they are tiny red bugs which embed themselves in a person's skin, making for a very itchy welt.  Picking blackberries, walking … (4 comments)

oconee county: NEW HORSE TRAIL OPENS AT HERITAGE PARK IN OCONEE CO., GA - 02/17/10 06:05 AM

This morning a couple of friends and I tried out the new horse trails at Heritage Park in Oconee Co., GA.
Heritage Park is mostly a passive park, only having a large arena, a livestock barn, and the beginnings of a historical village.  It has many acres of woodlands, creeks and  gullys only useful for hiking, mountain biking, and now, horseback riding.  Many years ago SORBA put in mountain bike trails which are report-ably some of the best in the state.  Besides recreational riders, there have been a number of bike competitions and cross country foot races held at this … (4 comments)

After a long wait, Oconee County, GA, finally has a place for visitors to stay at the recently opened SpringHill Suites by Marriot.  Not to slight our two wonderful B&B's, Ashford Manor and Rivendell, but many visitors prefer having a hotel-like atmosphere.
The hotel is located just off GA 316 which leads to Athens from Atlanta, and is convenient to the Exchange office buildings.
It's a perfect place to stay when visiting in Oconee County or Athens, GA.

oconee county: Crime in Rural Oconee County - 07/16/09 12:30 AM
This is what I love about living in a rural county -
In yesterday's police blotter there was an item about a rogue billy goat, apparently trying to impress the two nannies that were with him, broke the glass in 2 church doors on a rural Oconee County, GA church.  He also damaged 2 windows for a total of about $1000 in damage.  No one claimed the goats so they were left in the custody of the church's preacher.
Hmm, wonder if they are having a bar-b-cue this weekend?

oconee county: Hickory Hill Neighborhood Fall Trees - 11/11/08 08:14 AM
All pictures below are the exclusive property of Diane Boykin.

Yesterday I was out walking our Jack Russell, Sadie, and just had to take pictures of a few of the beautiful trees in my neighborhood, Hickory Hill, in Oconee County.  I'm not sure if this fall is especially colorful or we just forget how awesome fall can be right here.  It isn't even necessary to go to the mountains to enjoy the leaves this year.  I thought I'd share some of the trees with you.
