Starbuck's, and to a lesser degree Nordstrom department stores, have a theory and philosophy that in order to grow you capture your market by saturating that market with as many stores as possible. As a former Nordstrom buyer, the philosophy was to capture an area with multiple stores and then allow one "unit" aka store to become your "loss leader" or write off.
