economy: Fortune Magazine List of Fastest Growing Industries "Top Growers": Real Estate #1 - 11/06/08 07:51 PM
It is tough times for many Realtors today. Yet over the course of the last 5 years the Real Estate industry has been the #1 revenue growth industry in the country according to Fortune Magazine. In 2007 Real Estate experienced a 29.9% growth rate beating the second place industry of engineering and construction by over 10%.
What Does This Mean?
1. Real Estate is still a pillar and cornerstone of our U.S. economy
2. Real Estate experienced incredible growth and profits over the past 5 years
3. Hopefully Realtors saved their profits to weather the storm of the economy

Forbes.com recently released their list of the top 5 Most Stressful cities in America to live. Surprise: Chicago and not New York City was ranked #1. The list is based on mass generalizations and crystal ball forcasting. According to writer Maurna Desmond: "Chicago's rising unemployment rate, expensive gas, high population density and relatively poor air quality create a perfect storm of stress, according to measures we used to calculate the country's anxiety hot spots."   What no shot on the weather?

Starbuck's, and to a lesser degree Nordstrom department stores, have a theory and philosophy that in order to grow you capture your market by saturating that market with as many stores as possible. As a former Nordstrom buyer, the philosophy was to capture an area with multiple stores and then allow one "unit" aka store to become your "loss leader" or write off.
Economic Lesson or Business As Usual?
Yesterday Starbucks, kings of the brick and mortar overkill, announced they will be closing 600 stores nationwide resulting in over 12,000 employee layoffs.
