It's nippy, damp and clammy out. Today was the day to get my first guart of Chicken Soup for the season from the Parkway Deli (also known as the Grubb Road Deli) in Silver Spring. Yummm . . . . It never disappoints at this time of the year and through the rest of the fall and winter. I consider this the best chicken soup in Silver Spring.It is really the "Matzoh Ball Soup" served from a big square vat at the carry out part of the restaurant. This is the house that Sylvester Stallone lived in as a child in the Montgomery Hills/North Woodside Neighborhood of Silver Spring. The Cape Cod House on Seminary Road was built in 1952. Sly's parents owned the home sometime between 1952 and 1962, when the Stallone's Sold it.
The House has been renovated since the Stalone Family lived there. There are now 4 Bedrooms and 4 1/2 Baths.

The Committee to Save the Watson House, a large group of residents in Silver Spring's Woodside Forest, has appealed to Montgomery County to save the historic Watson House, one of the best and few remaining examples of the Dutch Colonial architecture in the area. Early in 2007, the Committee hired EHT Traceries, Inc., architectural historians based in D.C., to research the house and its architectural significance.

The great State of Maryland has decided to make all of their property owners reapply for their Homestead Deduction. I don't remember ever applying in the first place, but I know I recieve it every year and it's quite generous! Property owners should have received or will be receiving their assessments for 2008. Within the envelope is the standard Assessment Notice and two additional pages. The two additional pages at first glance appear to be the standard junk that is put in these mailers from the state. Former Republican Lobbyist Jack Abramoff must have liked Silver Spring as a place to live. Since moving to the area in the 1980's He has owned 4 houses in Silver Spring. Two in the Woodside Park Neighborhood and 2 in the Burnt Mills Hills Neighborhood. During the mid 1980's the Abramoffs lived in a house on Woodside Parkway in Woodside Park. In 1994 they sold the house on Woodside Parkway and moved into this brick and slate Colonial house on Alton Parkway, a larger house on a larger lot in the same neighborhood of Woodside Park.

This post was inspired by a another local blogger www.ThayerAvenue.com who posted about a ginormous McMansion going up in East Silver Spring on Thayer Avenue. Most of East Silver Spring still has "normal sized" older houses. The few McMansions or new infill construction that we do have REALLY stand out.
