localism: Maryland State Symbols - The Old and the New - 08/21/07 12:52 PM
Growing up as a Kid in Maryland, I knew that my State Flower was the Black Eyed Susan, My State Bird was a Baltimore Oriole and that my state song was "Maryland My Maryland" (sung to the tune of Tannenbaum O Tannenbaum or to me, Christmas Tree Oh Christmas Tree). What I didn't know, is how Official State Symbols come to be, They actually take an act of the General Assembly of Maryland and are numbered Articles or Codes of Government. WOW Now that I have grown up I've discovered that Maryland has a lot more Offical State Symbols:A State Sport which is Jousting?,A State Dog (2 comments)

The song Silver Springs was written by Stevie Nicks. Legend has it that she got the idea while riding in a limo on the Capitol Beltway after a concert and seeing the sign for the Silver Spring, Maryland Exit. Die-Hard Silver Springers and native residents will tell you they hate it when anyone makes Silver Spring plural. That extra S drives a lot of us crazy (especially when a public offical makes this FAUX PAS!) if you listen carefully to the song Stevie never uses the plural or the dreaded extra S in the song. The only place you'll find that extra S is in the (3 comments)

Tucked away in a wooded sylvan setting off New Hampshire Avenue near White Oak is the Neighborhood of Quaint Acres in Silver Spring, Md. A recent Washington Post Article describes the setting in this neighborhood to a tee. The setting is perfect for the Mid Century Modern houses that were built there in the early to late 1950's. Contemporary Mid Century Modern architects and builders such as Charles Goodman and Frank Lloyd Wright loved to make their homes seem as if they were one with nature. Mid Century Modern Homes have simple, clean lines without a lot of embellishments. They use a lot (0 comments)

Since my recent post about the Oldest House in Silver Spring an EVEN OLDER ONE has come on the market for sale. It's the original Kinsman Farmhouse out Colesville Road between 4 corners and Burnt Mills. It dates back to 1783!, and I thought 1833 was OLD!! It's on almost an acre hidden from the Road in the midst of newer houses and townhouses. Check out the MLS listing on it, you won't believe the restoration that's been done on this 7 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, 2 Fireplace Historic House or the fact that it is OVER 200 years old and is in the 4 Corners/Northwood (6 comments)

This was on Silver Spring Moms - I thought I'd pass it onto others: Though I'm not usually one for big chains, given the loss of Storehouse and IA ETC, this might be a good addition to our neighborhood- and help anchor even more stores.
