random rants: It's been a busy week so far, and it's only Tuesday! - 11/25/08 09:37 PM
On the heels of Monday's announcement with Citigroup receiving an additional $20 billion through the Trouble Assets Relief Program, it's been yet another busy day.
The Federal Reserve announced today that it will purchase up to $600 billion in mortgage backed assets from Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mae and the Federal Home Loan Banks. In an added effort to stabilize the economy, the central bank also announced the backing of consumer debt securities up to $200 billion that will include student, auto and credit card loans as well as loans backed by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Question: So how … (7 comments)

random rants: Grow Up and Do YOUR Job Responsibly! - 11/12/08 07:41 PM
When YOU call me to show one of my listings, I'm ecstatic. I have the utmost faith in YOUR ability to do your job, albeit sometimes it's real a "leap of faith".
I know that when we do our job we are taking on a number of responsibilities on the behalf of our buyer and seller clients, but sometimes I feel that sellers are taken for granted as if they don't even matter. As many of you know, there are a number of vacant properties on the market and I am relying on you to do your job by turning the … (11 comments)

random rants: Resizing Photos With 2 Clicks - 11/08/08 10:37 AM
Are you looking for an easy way to resize photos? Try this on for size but before you get excited, it only works with Windows XP, sorry Vista users. Simply scroll down the page to download  and install Image Resizer. This small 521kb gadget is a must have in my toolbox and easy to use without opening an editor program.
     1.   Right click on any photo or graphic file to bring up the Resize Pictures option.

     2.  Choose one of the defaulted options or use the advanced tab for customized resizing. When the resized photo is saved, the file … (11 comments)

random rants: Meet "Joe the Plumber" - 10/15/08 11:46 PM
The 2008 Presidential Election could certainly go down in history as the most interesting race faced since the election of President Kennedy. The interest in this election is high and there was much said tonight about "Joe the Plumber" during the debate. Is this the "Real Joe"? Doe's it really matter?
Isn't it wonderful that we live in such a democratic country where we are able to individually have an opinion and cast our vote?
Just make sure you VOTE! It's you're RIGHT.
THINK ABOUT IT? DO IT!

random rants: Google Directory Assistance - Really Cool!!! - 08/20/08 09:01 PM
For those of you who hate paying $2 every time you dial directory assistance from your cell phone, I heard about a cool tool today.  If you send a text to Google (466453) and type a name, and a city and state if necessary, you get free directory assistance via a return text. The response is immediate and free unless you have to pay for the text through your plan.
Try it: Debbie Small, Martinsburg or sample Google SMS online

random rants: Which came first...The Rooster or the Hen? - 08/16/08 12:46 AM
My office is a small satellite in the scheme of things for our company and we love it that way because of the comrade allowing fun for joking around with one another, but over time there has been a gender divide between the Hen House and the Rooster Den.
The theory is that Hens' like to cackle, poke around and eat corn while the Roosters' prefer to hunt, gather and cock-a-doodle-doo. While the Roosters' are listing REO's, the Hens' are chomping down the corn, gobbling up the pay dirt and planting their crops for future harvest.
So what's a Rooster to … (4 comments)

random rants: Rep. Capito returns to the Eastern Panhandle for a Forum Discussion - 08/13/08 09:02 PM
Congresswoman, Shelly Moore Capito quickly returned for an open discussion forum with local real estate agents and lenders this week after the recent Congressional Field Hearing in Martinsburg on July 31. The meeting was held at the Eastern Panhandle Board of REALTORS® office and was well attended by members concerned about the local housing market.
The discussion began causally as Representative Moore asked the room to bring up their concerns. The hot topic quickly moved toward class III taxes and the unfair assessments of properties that have been vacant for over a year effectively doubling the total taxes due. I addressed my concern about … (6 comments)

random rants: Reaching Out in The Rain - 08/07/08 08:53 PM
I've been playing in The Rain for over a year now, have jumped in and out of the storm, and came back at full gale because I appreciate the knowledge and camaraderie of the membership.
So many posts catch my eye, but one in particular grabbed by attention tonight because of the poster's location so I checked it out. After reading Luke Rummell's post and commenting on Astoria Oregon, where I had the privilege to visit last year with my daughter, the phone rang. An excited voice came through saying "Hello, this is Luke and you've made my day".  Do you … (11 comments)

random rants: TANG...It' NOT Just for Astronauts! - 08/02/08 12:46 AM
TANG...who knew you could do more than just drink it. Personally, I don't like the taste of the stuff but learned about a unique new use for it yesterday during a listing appointment.
While touring the home with the owner, we made our way to the basement and she pointed out their new water filtration system. In this area, filtration systems are often necessary to eliminate the heavy iron particles that create unsightly stains on clothing and fixtures. The first indication they had a problem was when the dishwasher turned an ugly brown inside. She said a friend told her to use TANG … (12 comments)

random rants: Congressional Field Hearing held in Martinsburg - 07/30/08 10:51 PM
I was caught on TV as a spectator during the field hearing held in Martinsburg West Virginia at the chambers of the Berkeley County Commission. The event was widely covered by local media and well attended with standing room only.
Just on the heels of the Housing Rescue Bill, U.S. Representatives Maxine Waters, Financial Services Subcommittee Chair (D-CA) and Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), held a Congressional Field Hearing on June 29 to address affordable housing issues in West Virginia and the current challenges in the Eastern Panhandle. The two hour hearing was conducted in capital hill fashion with a red … (5 comments)

random rants: Gardening Tip to Conserve Water - 07/26/08 11:53 PM
We have been very lucky this year in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia regarding rain fall but the past two years remain clear in my mind. We were in a definate drought and it was very evident at The Woods Resort golf course as the greens burned to brown and water restrictions were posted for residents.
Here's a nifty tip I'd like to share with you to conserve water while watering your garden. Running a sprinkler for two hours can use up to 500 gallons of water. To figure out the right amount to water, put an empty tuna can on your … (5 comments)

random rants: It's a "Sign of the Times" - 07/11/08 10:40 PM
With the souring cost of energy taking a toll on businesses and individuals alike, many businesses are considering a four day work week. The Berkeley County Tax Assessor's office located in Martinsburg West Virginia may be just such a trend setter.
According to Assessor Preston Gooden, employees will begin 10 hour workdays in the near future as his office is currently working on restructuring the schedule. Gooden said his employees will make the schedule change so they'll only have to drive to work four days a week, relieving them from an extra day of using fuel to drive to work. They seem very enthusiastic about the change … (5 comments)

random rants: What was I thinking? Bet I'm not alone... - 07/05/08 01:10 PM

In my excitement to get a domain name for the new outside blog, I really blew it! I thought it would be really cool to use mylocationrealtorblog.com and went ahead and made the purchase. Thanks to Don Fabrizio-Garcia's comment in his blog today, I was reminded how wrong I was. I can use Debbie Small and the Realtor trademark after my name, but can not use a descriptive term with Realtor such as "West Virginia Realtor" or "#1 Realtor."
Did you know that NAR can demand that a user cease and desist using such an address? Wow, that could really fowl up your hard earned SEO ranking.

random rants: Just For Fun :) - 08/31/07 12:58 PM
The Kodak v705 has been out for awhile and much discussed here at Active Rain. It seems to be a good choice for real estate agents. Mind you, I am a total novice when it comes to photography and need something that is simple to use and light to pack and go. I was able to find one online last week for less than $200 but they just raised their price by $30. Wonder if Kodak will continue developing their dual lens series and offer a new model in the future.
I've seen this type of example done before in the group and thought it would … (11 comments)

random rants: Thanks for your advice - 08/30/07 10:23 PM
I am very new here and landed back at AR while doing some recent research on the Kodak V705 camera. After reading such good advice here, I decided to purchase the camera and am pleased to say that I am very happy with it so far.
Kudos to everyone for your help and thanks again.
