Thanks to a Hazel Dell woman, something new's cooking in Clark County, Washington kitchens. Felicia Hill's son has a life-threatening peanut allergy, so when she couldn't find a bakery to guarantee a safe birthday cake for him, she made her own.
Hill took cake decorating classes and started experimenting with recipes for peanut, gluten and dairy free cakes. Soon, she was baking them for close friends and families. Hummingbirds and humans have a great relationship. They provide us with hours of entertainment, and we often provide them with extra nectar. We see hummingbirds year round in Clark County Washington but recently, the activity has increased and soon all the “snowbird varieties” will be returning. Hummingbirds drink nectar to maintain their metabolism, (wings flap an average of 53 times per second), primarily from flowers and sugar - water filled feeders. They also eat soft bodied insects and spiders for protein–in fact, they are actually pretty effective bug eating machines. As a little girl, one of my best friends was actually a tree – an evergreen we called “Old Faithful.” For as long as I remember, he stood out there in the woods across from my house – tall, solid, majestic. At the base of his trunk my friends and I would play for hours. If we were all clinging to the side of a cliff, who would you save first? Do your kids ever prompt you to name a favorite? My daughter, always testing, used that scenario on me for years.
