clark county washington: Something New's Cooking in Clark County, WA Kitchens - 07/25/11 04:00 AM

Thanks to a Hazel Dell woman, something new's cooking in Clark County, Washington kitchens. Felicia Hill's son has a life-threatening peanut allergy, so when she couldn't find a bakery to guarantee a safe birthday cake for him, she made her own.

Hill took cake decorating classes and started experimenting with recipes for peanut, gluten and dairy free cakes. Soon, she was baking them for close friends and families. Her creative and colorful concoctions were so popular that she decided to try to make a little money on the side by selling them.

However, she found … (8 comments)

Think before you Swim.Hurray, the sun is finally shining!  Just remember to think before you swim in Clark County, Washington this weekend. Some lakes, rivers and streams are just too risky for swimming because of high water levels and swift currents. Parents especially need to remember there's no lifeguard on duty at most of our county swimming holes.

Tragedies can be avoided.Sadly, three people have drowned this year in Southwest Washington.  The most recent involved an 11 year old boy who dove into the water after a pop bottle. He was with similar aged friends at a popular area known … (6 comments)

In Clark County – It’s the Berries if U-Pick!

Brrr. It's been chilly.Okay, so we had some very cool weather in the Pacific Northwest (second wettest in history) and it seemed like summer would never come.  The wet and cold has delayed the cherry and strawberry harvests this year – but it’s not all bad.

Life is just a bowl of Cherries. It created a perfect ripening season for cherries, which has actually produced sweeter fruit.  Which brought  to mind that song: “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries”, which encourages you to not take things too seriously and … (5 comments)

clark county washington: Wet Weather in Clark County Washington. - 05/15/11 10:47 AM

We've sure had plenty of wet weather in Clark County, Washington this spring. No doubt that's the understatement of the year if you’ve been stuck anywhere in the Pacific Northwest without a break. Those webs on our hands and feet are going to be permanent if mother nature doesn’t let up soon? But, some are thriving.

The slugs, moss and weeds are doing just fine, thank you. And that’s the problem, how do we deal with those annoyances without endangering our neighborhood kids and dogs, not to mention the wildlife? Fortunately, there are many “environmentally friendly remedies” for a lot … (7 comments)

clark county washington: Hummingbirds and Humans - A Great Relationship - 05/15/11 08:39 AM
Hummingbirds and humans have a great relationship. They provide us with hours of entertainment, and we often provide them with extra nectar. We see hummingbirds year round in Clark County Washington but recently, the activity has increased and soon all the “snowbird varieties” will be returning. Hummingbirds drink nectar to maintain their metabolism, (wings flap an average of 53 times per second), primarily from flowers and sugar - water filled feeders. They also eat soft bodied insects and spiders for protein–in fact, they are actually pretty effective bug eating machines. But they do need the nectar to provide the the power necessary … (4 comments)

clark county washington: Friends of Trees - 05/12/11 04:13 AM

Friends of Trees

As a little girl, one of my best friends was actually a tree – an evergreen we called “Old Faithful.”  For as long as I remember, he stood out there in the woods across from my house – tall, solid, majestic. At the base of his trunk my friends and I would play for hours.  There was even the occasional bird funeral, complete with solemn procession and a little eulogy as our giant comrade presided quietly over the proceedings.  On occasion I’d climb up, sit nestled in those big solid limbs and just marvel at nature and all that … (4 comments)

clark county washington: Rainy Days and Mondays-staying positive during the gloomiest of days. - 05/09/11 05:37 AM

It's been unusually wet in the Pacific Northwest this year. Lots of days with gray skies, cool temperatures and plenty of rain. This morning's weather, plus it is Monday, created the "perfect storm" for a gloom and doom mood. Fortunately, after a bit of reflection over a pretty decent cup of coffee, the cloud is beginning to lift
No doubt you too have days when it's tough to keep your chin up and your mood positive. It doesn't have to be rainy or a Monday for self doubt and discouragement to take hold. Doom and gloom moods have no allegiance. … (0 comments)

clark county washington: "F"avorites? Not me. - 05/01/11 05:50 AM

Naming a Favorite Child?
If we were all clinging to the side of a cliff, who would you save first?  Do your kids ever prompt you to name a favorite? My daughter, always testing, used that scenario on me for years. Naturally, I'd shake my head, smile and say something like, "Oh good grief, that will never happen, and if it did, I'd jump over the edge because it would be too painful to choose."
Naming a Favorite Grandchild?
So fast forward through the years, and now I have four unique and wonderful grandchildren. Do I have a favorite? Of course not. … (7 comments)
