pumpkins: News and Views of Clark County - Love the SuperFreak, warts and all. - 10/18/15 12:34 AM
Wart-covered pumpkins and gourds covered in warts are popping up in Clark County, WA this fall.
Many of our area pumpkin patches and farmers stands have a fun alternative this year. Pumpkins that appear to have a disfiguring disease. Turns out, it's not a problem, but a thoughtful process of genetics. Apparently, it takes at least 10 generations of cross-breeding to produce a gourd that's got enough warts to be sold under the "SuperFreak" label. These pumpkins have actually been around since 2010, but this marks the first year for one on our porch.
The SuperFreak is a separate strain of so-called knucklehead pumpkins. They are … (18 comments)

pumpkins: The Color of Pumpkins - 10/23/13 01:49 AM
The Color of Pumpkins When we think of pumpkins. we normally envision a vibrant orange gourd. And, many of us think they do make some of the best jack-o'-lanterns. However, pumpkins come in a rainbow of fun colors - red, pink, white, tan, green and blue - and various shades in between.
Pumpkins reproduce in a way that creates interesting shapes and colors. Pumpkins and other squash have both female and male blossoms on the same vine. Therefore, cross-pollination is very likely between the different types of plants, resulting in hybrids.

pumpkins: Stingy Jack - The History of the Jack o' Lantern - 10/15/13 02:00 AM
Stingy Jack - The History of the Jack o’ Lantern.
Pumpkin Carving is a popular part of our Halloween and Harvest Celebrations. We’ve been making jack-o-lanterns out of pumpkins for centuries. In fact, the tradition hails from an old Irish myth about a character named Stingy Jack.
Stingy Jack was a miserable soul who loved to trick people. One night, he manged to trick the devil and stayed one step ahead of him until his death. Once he died, he was denied access into heaven - and hell. He was doomed to wander forever in the dark Netherworld.

After being denied access, … (22 comments)

Very little seemed to deter this Peter, or Polly Pumpkin Eater. Thanks for watching - you can always find me at exploringclarkcounty.com

pumpkins: JD's Pumpkin Patch - When life gives you turkeys, sell those! - 10/12/12 02:39 AM
JD’s Pumpkin Patch - When life gives you turkeys, sell those! We know the importance of being flexible and having a backup plan. This point is underscored quite well in a recent story about a family farm in Yacolt, Washington. JD’s Famous Pumpkin Patch doesn’t have any pumpkins to sell this month. Despite being called JD’s Famous Pumpkin Patch for quite some time, the Schwindt family didn’t even have a pumpkin patch until last year. However, since it was such a big success, they planned to have an even larger pumpkin patch this year. Life though, doesn’t always unfold according to … (23 comments)

pumpkins: Once Upon a Fairytale Pumpkin - 10/31/11 03:43 AM
Once Upon a Fairytale Pumpkin-
Once upon a time in Camas, a lover of autumn, and all of its magic, stumbled upon a bin filled with beautiful and mysterious looking pumpkins. These pumpkins ranged in color from dark green to a gorgeous deep mahogany. They conjured up images of a fanciful gourd straight from the pages of a fairy tale. Squat in shape and deeply ribbed, they appealed to the possibilities of imagination. Is this the kind of pumpkin that carried Cinderella to the ball? Fairytale pumpkins are an old heirloom variety native to France. It’s French name is “Musque … (21 comments)

pumpkins: When Pumpkins Fly - 10/16/11 03:18 AM
When pumpkins fly in Vancouver - they're aiming for 1000 meters. Two local men have created the ultimate flying machine for orange gourds, and so far they've sent one 25,525 feet. Their ultimate goal is to propel one another 756 feet.
Joe Barbera and Russ Villhouer have been firing pumpkins for quite some time, but this fall, the duo has upgraded their firing technology. Theirpumpkin cannon now sports a 38 foot barrel made from steel heating duct and is braced with a sturdy metal frame.
