Bastrop County is very diversified and offers small town living be it rural residential, farm and ranch, or horse properties. Bastrop County has a number of hospitals, box stores, rural airport, and is approx. 45 minutes from downtown Austin, and 2 hours from the coastline, Houston or San Antonio. Things have been tough here in this/our part of Central Texas with the drought! Grasses are brown, trees are dry. Tanks are drying up ( makes for some good fishing but not as much sport as when the tanks are full!) People like my husband and I, who have hay fields, went thru a whole growing season last year and with out one cutting to supplement our feed program. It is that way for all the local ranchers. Hay is being brought in from other areas and of course the prices are escalating. Tough on top of tough in these economic times. … (0 comments)

Lake Thunderbird is a small lake community about 7 miles outside of Smithville Texas, approx. 45 minutes from Austin, 2 hours to San Antonio or the Coast. Lake Thunderbird offers rrelaxed country living with light covenants, volunteer fire department, play ground, and local general store. This is one of three lake communities in Bastrop County.

bastrop county texas: McDade Texas a great area in Bastrop County Texas - 02/13/09 12:31 PM
McDade is a quaint town that was founded by the Mundines back in the mid 1800's in Bastrop County Texas. Now it has a elementary school, fire station, post office, and general store on Main Street. The closest town is Elgin about 5 minutes away. Austin is about 30-40 minutes west on Hwy 290.

Cedar Hills is a small rural subdivision located just outside of Elgin in Bastrop county in Texas. There are two entries in to the Cedar Hills off of Highway 95. Cedar Hills has light restrictions and no mobile homes are allowed. The roads are paved. There is lots of natural privacy created by all of the Cedar trees in the subdivision and there is a lovely private park area with a small pond for the residents. This weekend my husband and I attended our friends wedding in Bastrop Texas. After the wedding and reception at the church downtown we all changed out of our Sunday go to meeting clothes into some good ole jeans and boots and met at the Watterson Dance Hall which is located on 304 between Bastrop and Red Rock. Watterson Dance Hall has been around for lots of years and is a great place to go for some live music and dancing. Bastrop County Texas is located southeast of Travis County and the State Capital of Austin. The town of Bastrop is the county seat, and nearby Elgin and Smithville are two of the major towns in Bastrop County. The area of Bastrop County was founded by Stephen B. Austin in the 1800's and area towns like Elgin and Smithville were settled at about the same time.
