Bastrop Texas has a long and varied history. In the very early 1800's the Spanish established a fort where the "Kings Highway" crossed the Colorado River on it's way to Louisiana to the east and Mexico to the south. Bastrop's existence was fortified by the river, the road of commerce, it's fertile soils, and the loblolly pines. The town of Bastrop was platted in the mid 1800's. The rolling pastures, fertile soils, and pines in the area appealed to settlers. Large farms and ranches were established. Cotton and lumber were a consistent form of commerce for many years. Today
