Where Do You Find Real Estate Leaders?  Right Here on ActiveRain--Of COURSE!No matter what the state of your real estate market, we're all aware that real estate is an ever-changing business.  As business owners, one of the most important character traits which we must employ is integrity.  The second most important, among many other positive character traits we must possess, is the ability to embrace change.  If we are not current leaders in our field and we aspire to become a leader in the real estate business, we must possess leadership qualities.  Leaders see a need for change and are willingly embrace it!  Are … (62 comments)

active rain advice: Are You the Cruise Director or the Ship's Captain? - 10/03/10 12:46 AM

Are You the Cruise Director or the Ship's Captain?  Much has been written about social media and the time in which we spend participating in order to procure business.  I recently read an article by one of our own members who proclaimed to remove herself from the social media rhelm as she discovered, after a lengthy recovery process following hospitalization, that she really didn't need social media to the extent in which she was participating.  Many of us find ourselves flying by the seat of our pants where social media is concerned.  It seems that on a daily basis, we are … (59 comments)

active rain advice: Is it Time for You to Raise YOUR Bar? - 11/22/09 01:48 PM
Demanding More of Yourself Than You Think You Can Give In Stewart Emery's Mastery, the reminder to 'raise the bar' just when you think you're comfortable, reminds me of my high school and college basketball coaches' philosophies.  I was far more sensitive when I was in high school than I am now and my coach yelling at me could reduce me to tears any day of the week!  He demanded SO much of me and I SO wanted to please him and make him proud of my efforts and help bring the team to victory with each and every game--whether it … (58 comments)

active rain advice: Adding Pictures to Your Active Rain Blog--The 20/20 Rule - 10/12/09 07:52 AM
Adding Pictures to Your Active Rain Blog--The 20/20 Rule I was teaching a blogging class at our Association recently and one of the questions was about posting your photos and clip art on your blog. "How do I keep my text/words from running into my pictures?"  I explained the 20/20 rule to him.  This week I received an email asking me that same question from another member.  Today as I was reading a post, I noticed that the text was butting up against the bloggers clip art and thought it was time I share this simple rule with you for posting … (53 comments)

Giving Back to the Active Rain Community

Transitioning into a new career, no matter what avenue you take to make that transition, can be an arduous process.  Wrapping your arms and your mind around this new career and giving it your all, makes for a much smoother adjustment than simply flying by the seat of your pants!  The same thing goes for newcomers to the blogging community.  If you're anything like I was, I tippy-toed into the blogosphere--very cautiously, I might add!  How many times have we heard the negatives of blogging?  Well, let me tell you, the amount of … (103 comments)

active rain advice: Why We Post and DASH! - 04/04/09 06:35 AM
Why We Post and Dash! I've read recently that there are some that don't understand why members don't respond back to each and every comment that is left on their posts.  Folks, I am here to say that for many of us, it is virtually (no pun intended!) impossible!   We are writing for several reasons--to garner business from both the consumer and our fellow agents, to share knowledge and we sometimes write just for the heck of it.
I'm not quite sure which category this post would fit into! LOL

But, when we do capture the … (103 comments)

active rain advice: New Custom Blog or Not? - 01/08/09 05:39 PM
I'm Sorry, Bob Stewart! Imagine the shock when I answered my phone (thankfully I answered!) and it was Active Rain's fearless leader, Bob Stewart on the other end!  Mere moments before my phone rang, my hubby/CFO was reviewing my expenses for the week and had asked about new Active Rain Charges! "Oh, it's for this new outside blog which is what I'm working on RIGHT now!"  I could NOT get the new outside blog to work and I wanted it to work right THEN!   Pearls (tips) regarding this new hyper-search-engine-juice-outside-blog seemed appropriate for an apology to Bob for having to … (177 comments)

active rain advice: 2009 New Year's Resol-YOU-tions! - 12/31/08 05:41 PM
2009 New Year's Resol-YOU-tions!
Yes, it's that time again (thank goodness)!  Time to take a moment (or several) to reflect on your past year in business and set your goals for 2009!  If you have already done so, congratulations!  One of the first things that I learned in this business is that you can only fly by the seat of your pants for SO long!  A business plan is a MUST in this business and you must constantly tweak it in order to increase your success.  While reflecting, be a little critical of yourself, your practices and your expenses; see how … (48 comments)

active rain advice: Getting Started RIGHT in the RAIN - 12/22/08 01:54 PM
Getting Started RIGHT in the RAIN
New to The RAIN? In celebration of my arrival at the 200K mark, I thought I'd practice what I preach--paying it forward!  Rather than 'boast' about achieving 200K points and how I got to this point, I decided to share with all of the newcomers to Active Rain that it CAN be done--and it's really pretty painless!

One year ago, I skeptically joined Active Rain.  As I was recently chatting with WooHoo Sally, we laughed at our initial thoughts of this forum:   Both of us were weary of this social networking 'thing' … (119 comments)

active rain advice: Are You Posting About Local History or Area Events? - 12/04/08 06:59 PM
Announcing TWO New Active Rain Groups! Creating a new group is actually a pretty easy task here in the RAIN!  Ask a couple of members to help you moderate and start one!  Recently, I noticed that a majority of my posts didn't have five real (group) 'homes' and decided to add a couple of groups to accomodate them and others' posts fitting those same descriptions. Remember, the more groups that you post to, the more Google, MSN and Yahoo juice you have!

If you haven't joined and you're looking for a group home for your events or a home … (17 comments)

active rain advice: Jump In With Both Feet or Play in the Puddles... - 11/24/08 08:17 PM
Jump In With Both Feet or Play in the Puddles Here in the RAIN......Either way, it's okay!Lately, I've been receiving alot of emails from new Active Rain members about quite a broad range of things--how to add color to your posts, how to subscribe to a member, what to do with that subscription and how to 'reciprocate.'  Now, I'm certainly no expert but, as I've been answering more and more questions and watching these newbies just flourish here in the Rain, I realized that 'hey, maybe I've GOT it!'  I've now been an active member on Active Rain for ONE YEAR! … (33 comments)

active rain advice: Integrity Without Compromise - 11/24/08 01:49 AM
Integrity Without Compromise In·teg·ri·ty
What does integrity mean to you?  What does it mean for you in your business?  Moreover, what does your integrity mean to your clients?

The definition of integrity is really quite simple--firm adherence to a code of especially moral values. Integrity is synonymous with words such as incorruptibility, soundness, completeness, and honesty.  As real estate professionals, our 'value' is only as good as our integrity.

Commitment to integrity is something that is predominantly 'ingrained' in us as children; however, as adults, we must establish a commitment to this practice both in life and in our business, … (68 comments)

active rain advice: Embrace Change; Play in the Rain with Us! - 11/11/08 07:38 AM
Embrace CHANGE; Play in the Rain with Us! Embracing CHANGE; Play in the Rain with Us! No matter the type of market that we're in, we're all aware that real estate is everchanging.  One of the most important character traits which we must employ as business people is integrity. In addition to that, and among many other positive character traits we must possess, is the ability to embrace change.  If we are not current leaders in our field and we aspire to become a leader in the real estate business, we must possess leadership qualities.

active rain advice: Active Rain: Educational and Multifaceted - 08/11/08 06:20 AM
Using Active Rain as an Educational Tool Active Rain:  Educational & Multifaceted!

I was chatting today with a fellow-Rain'er and were discussing our favorite bloggers and some of the current discussions that are going on.  That lead to the topic of posts that lead to discussions that seem to go on and on!  I love those--especially if they're friendly!  If they're not friendly, I try to steer clear of the comments and either move on or sit back and watch!

However, I have to say that a large part of the time, I read the post … (20 comments)

Contract, Addendum, Addendum, Addendum... Contract, Addendum, Addendum, Addendum...

...and the pain goes on and on!  Are you suffering from RELO OVERLOAD?  Upon completion of a recent relocation package to turn in to my firm, I noticed that my TOTAL pages--not including the HUD-1 was 52!  My standard package is 14!  No, I don't take the time to count them, the total number of pages is on my scanned copy of the .pdf that I email to my accounting office at the firm is noted at the top of the page!  You sign contract, addendum, addendum, addendum, and then complete 30 … (24 comments)

Are Your Sellers Shopping Charlotte NC Real Estate Agents?
Are Your Sellers Shopping Charlotte NC Real Estate Agents?

While reading a recent post on Active Rain, I was reminded how our business is constantly changing.  Are your sellers shopping Charlotte NC real estate agents?  (fill in  YOUR city!)  I remember the days when we received a call to list someone's property, that was that!  There was no 'competing' for a listing and there was no 'interview' process--the Sellers simply phoned you to list their property and you arrived with documents, a few business cards and a tape measure in hand! … (10 comments)

Tenacity and Constant Contact are Imperative in Our Business

The portion of the article below, written by Justin Parrish of the Charlotte Observer (and with permission to share here, of course!) came as a total surprise to me in Sunday's Charlotte Observer!  For those of you who read my writing routinely, you know that I have been writing about the increased number of first time buyers that I've been dealing with lately!  This was one of them and she was a complete doll to work with!  I'm sharing this shameless … (8 comments)

Active Rain and Reciprocity
Active Rain & Reciprocity

rec·i·proc·i·ty

-noun 1.  A reciprocal state or relation. 2.  Reciprocation; mutual exchange. 3.  The relation or policy in commercial dealings between countries by which corresponding advantages or privileges are granted by each country to the citizens of the other.

How does this term, reciprocity apply to Active Rain?  I've spoken with a few Active Rainers about my 'habit' here in the Rain:  I login, go to my BLOGS tab and look at the right hand column.  Here lies the Active Rain members to whom I have subscribed.  I … (60 comments)
