Dena has saved me the time and effort of putting together this information. She's probably done a better job of it than I would have anyway and I thank her for it.

Save the planet by making an old home energy efficient
Better tax credits for increasing the energy efficiency of your existing home. WOW that makes sense. Previously there was a $200 cap on replacement windows. Now it is $1500 tax credit for all energy efficient projects. Don't get me wrong I love the idea of building more energy … (3 comments)

How the Stimulus Benefits “Green” (And How You Can Position Yourself to Benefit as Well) - 02/19/09 12:17 PM
This is the kind of information that needs to be out there so that people hve better information to counter their knee jerk reactions! Thanks for posting it.
Via Ryan Moehring (EcoBroker International):
You may think there is too much "pork" in the recently signed stimulus bill. Or perhaps too much spending or too may tax cuts. Its passage may offend your Keynesian or Monetarist economic views, and may, you believe, lead to the very demise of capitalism itself (OK, that may be going too far). You may not think we need a stimulus at all-that we should let the free market recover … (2 comments)

Winter roofs : Pamela Simmons - 02/16/09 06:19 PM
We are expecting a storm here this weekand it made me think about this post. A few years ago, we had lots of collapsed roofs and the repair of them finally got many people to insulate the attic properly. Pamela's article should motivate many to do it for a much more positive reason.
Via Dena Stevens ~ Ecobroker ~So. Colorado Realtor (Colorado Western Real Estate):
'Tis the season to remind everyone about the benefits of proper roof ventilation. Let's face it how often do you really look at your roof during the year? This time of year as you are hanging Christmas  lights, … (1 comments)

The New American Home - Made Right - 02/14/09 12:58 PM
Another one of those great posts that is well written, simple to understand and reassures me that I am not alone in the desert.
Via Jeff Geoghan MBA - Lancaster PA Real Estate Expert (The Jeff Geoghan Realty Group, Coldwell Banker Lancaster PA):
For the last 25 years, industrious American pioneers have been laying the groundwork for a new revolution.
With developable land diminishing and existing homes aging, the time is coming and is here now for Americans to look for the better option in homebuilding - what has been termed "sustainable design" or "green building".  All politics aside, the trend towards better … (0 comments)

Prince Charles Speaks Out - 02/09/09 01:23 PM
Whatever you might think about Prince Charles his commitment to the environment is indisputable. Highgrove has been a model of sustainable agriculture for decades. He has funded many projects and foundations aimed at developing sustainable goals for many years. His philanthropy has mostly been overshadowed by Diana's because she was in the news but he has been a powerful voice for sustainable living for a long time.
Last week he made a statement that got the attention of a lot more people than usual. TheGUARDIAN  article gives an overview. At a conference in Mumbai the Prince said:
"I strongly believe that … (5 comments)

Recycled homes Part 3 of 3 - 02/05/09 03:39 PM
There is an ever growing selection of recycled materials that can be used in remodeling or building a home today. Before we look at those though, let's consider another form o recycling. I touched upon this is REUSE but if we consider recycling to be using an object or the materials from which an object is constructed to make a new object or the materials for a new object what about recycling a building for another purpose?
There are examples all across the country of churches, hospitals, barns and lighthouses that have been transformed into living spaces. Firehouses, grain silos and 1950's era … (6 comments)

Homelessness Marathon - 02/01/09 01:06 PM
February 12th is the date for the 12th Homelessness Marathon. This is not the kind of Marathon you might think of at first. No one has been in training to do long distance running for this event. The event in question is an annual 14-hour radio broadcast featuring the voices and stories of homeless people from around the United States via a national toll free phone number..
This year the program will originate from Pass Christian, MS. It is next door to Waveland, MS which is the Corps of Engineers officially designated "ground zero" for Hurricane Katrina's Landfall. Pass Christian lost nearly … (3 comments)

My blog is as much about a philosophy of life and living as it is about real estate as a business. E.F. Shumacher subtitled his book SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL "Economics as if People Mattered" In the real estate industry we realize that people matter and that where they live matters. We now also have a larger responsiblity, I believe, to get them to consider HOW they live. Everyone in the developed world using less energy and resources makes it possible for those who have access to neither to experience a better life and to make the difference between their being able to having a roof overhead or not or for their children to eat or not.
