green building: Living walls Natural Air Filtration - 11/14/08 05:59 PM
The quality of our indoor air has declined to the point that poor air quality is fourth on a list of 31 environmental threats in the US, according to the EPA. "It is estimated that nearly 25% of US residents are affected by poor indoor air quality, either at the workplace or the … (1 comments)

green building: Good Old Green Homes - 06/20/07 01:30 PM
Green building is considered to be a trend that is becoming mainstream. The truth is that it has always been mainstream. Before transportation was a convenient as it is today, people always used local materials to build with. There was a natural attempt to build homes that took advantage of the … (0 comments)

green building: Green Building vs Green Washing - 02/05/07 01:05 PM
As green building becomes more popular following the increased warnings about global climate change we need to be more vigilant than ever about "grennwashing". While I would be among the first to say that bamboo flooring is a great choice I recoil at the fact that some manufacturerers use toxic adhesives … (2 comments)

green building: Affordable "Green" Home - 01/16/07 11:14 PM
Most of us are aware that "green" building is going mainstream. Most of us realize that it behooves us to mention features like passive solar heating, active solar systems, themal windows insulation upgrades or energy rated appliances and systems in our listing and advertising materials. Unfortunately many people still belive that … (0 comments)

green building: Real Estate as a Vehicle of Social Change - 12/20/06 01:39 AM
I have mentioned in previous posts that I was a Social Worker and Counselor for many years before I began my career in real estate. As the new year approaches, I find myself reflecting on the ways in which  my current choice of occupation relates to my past experience. One … (23 comments)

Back from New Orleans and catching up with all things that I couldn't do while I was gone. Learned some things, met some people and am instituting some changes in my business. I think everyone who was there is probably doing much the same.

green building: What Makes a House "Green" or "Sustainable"? - 09/16/06 11:10 PM
This is a question I get asked a lot as an EcoBroker. There is not one simple answer. Overall, a home that uses less embodied energy to build and to maintain and live in while providing a safe, healthy living space for its inhabitants would be the most general answer … (1 comments)

green building: Green building - 07/22/06 01:37 AM
In a previous post I wrote that 60% or more of greenhouse gases come from buildings. That was information from an older book by Santa Fe architech Ed Mazria. More recent information says that the current annual energy consumption by buildings is 48%....I'd love to believe that better insulation and more efficient … (2 comments)

My blog is as much about a philosophy of life and living as it is about real estate as a business. E.F. Shumacher subtitled his book SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL "Economics as if People Mattered" In the real estate industry we realize that people matter and that where they live matters. We now also have a larger responsiblity, I believe, to get them to consider HOW they live. Everyone in the developed world using less energy and resources makes it possible for those who have access to neither to experience a better life and to make the difference between their being able to having a roof overhead or not or for their children to eat or not.
