new orleans: One per cent solution - 03/01/09 02:34 AM
I had a closing last week. I got a commission check on Thursday and ran right to the bank to deposit it. I wrote checks to my creditors but the first two checks were to a commitment I made for this year. I donate one per cent of every commission check to my local public radio station because I believe that public radio is an important source of music, news and information about various points of view that are not commonly available through other sources. Whether I necessarily like or agree with all of them is not the point. The point is

new orleans: Cradle to Cradle Thinking - 12/28/08 02:21 PM
In 2003 William McDonough wrote, "Why not shift the focus of green design from managing the environmental impact of a destructive system to creating buildings and materials that generate wholly positive effects for people and nature." He suggests that we might begin to consider a shift to good design rather than just green design. As an example, he points to a highly rated green built building in which the air quality was worse than the outdoor air. Although great pains had been taken to seal the building from outdoor air leaks and it had great insulation and was very energy efficient, no

new orleans: Make It Right - 12/25/08 01:05 PM
Most of us remember the scenes of devastation from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Those of us who went to New Orleans for the 2006 NAR Conference saw how much the city was still a scene of devastation. Unfortunatly, most of the Lower Ninth Ward remains devasted. I will be doanting 1% from every commission earned in 2009 to MAKE IT RIGHT. Those of you who know me can imagine that I am not a huge reader of ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST since I love good architecture but prefer simple and small applications of it. However, there was a cover story about an effort

new orleans: Brangelina Goes to New Orleans - 01/18/07 12:53 AM
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Probably both are equally appropriate. Driving to meet a client this morning I heard on the radio that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had bought and are moving into a mansion in the French Quarter. Oddly enough, when they descibed the home, I remembered seeing it in November when I was there for Nardi Gras. What was interesting was the speculation about what their move would do to help rejuvenate the city. I commend them for a lot of their work to raise awareness (and money) for many good causes. I am sure

new orleans: Recovering from Convention - 11/16/06 12:22 AM
Back from New Orleans and catching up with all things that I couldn't do while I was gone. Learned some things, met some people and am instituting some changes in my business. I think everyone who was there is probably doing much the same. The city was not as bad as I had feared it would be,but it was not good. Fortunately, the people are determined to keep going. They are as cheerful and friendly as ever and they will continue to make New Orleans a unique and special experience for all who go there. The opportunity to create a demonstration

new orleans: GOOD OLD HOUSES - 07/31/06 11:58 PM
I just read an article in the August issue of National Geographic about New Orleans. I was struck by the photo of an 82 year old man who built his house with his own hands in 1953.. It said that when Hurricane Rita flooded the Lower 9th Ward in 1965 the water came almost to the top of the decorative archways that he had made himself. (He was a platerer by trade). Hurricane Katrina filled the house to the ceiling. It ruined his clothes but the house suffered no structural damage except a broken window pane. THAT IS A SOLIDLY BUILT

My blog is as much about a philosophy of life and living as it is about real estate as a business. E.F. Shumacher subtitled his book SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL "Economics as if People Mattered" In the real estate industry we realize that people matter and that where they live matters. We now also have a larger responsiblity, I believe, to get them to consider HOW they live. Everyone in the developed world using less energy and resources makes it possible for those who have access to neither to experience a better life and to make the difference between their being able to having a roof overhead or not or for their children to eat or not.
