recycled: Recycled homes Part 3 of 3 - 02/05/09 03:39 PM
There is an ever growing selection of recycled materials that can be used in remodeling or building a home today. Before we look at those though, let's consider another form o recycling. I touched upon this is REUSE but if we consider recycling to be using an object or the materials from which an object is constructed to make a new object or the materials for a new object what about recycling a building for another purpose?
There are examples all across the country of churches, hospitals, barns and lighthouses that have been transformed into living spaces. Firehouses, grain silos and 1950's era … (6 comments)

recycled: Would you Live in a Paper House? - 12/31/08 01:12 PM
I have read several articles lately about how recycling has slowed down along with the economy. Even things like metals and paper have slowed as their (monetary) value decreased in the marketplace. It reminded me of two home building techniques I am fascinated by.
Paper Log Houses:
Elis Steman House  Mr. Stenman was the mechanical engineer who designed the machine used to make paperclips. The wall material, roughly an inch thick, is made out of pressed newspapers, glue and varnish-which keeps it waterproof. He began construction in 1922 on his vacation home in Rockport, Massachusetts and completed it in 1924. It was turned into a … (1 comments)

recycled: Real Estate as a Vehicle of Social Change - 12/20/06 01:39 AM
I have mentioned in previous posts that I was a Social Worker and Counselor for many years before I began my career in real estate. As the new year approaches, I find myself reflecting on the ways in which  my current choice of occupation relates to my past experience. One way in which my marketing will change in 2007 is that I will focus on being me. Marketing is about letting people know who you are. I chose reidential resale because I believe in recycling and because I am all too familiar with the difference that the lack of a home can … (23 comments)

recycled: Why Buy Recycled? - 07/30/06 01:58 AM
When people ask me what I do, I tell them that I recycle houses. That almost inevitably gets them to ask how I do it or what I mean. I then explain to them that I am a Realtor and I specialize in residential resale which is a way to reuse existing homes. This gives me an opportunity to talk to them about the advaqntages of mature neighborhoods and the ability to get exactly what you want while getting a healthy house for less money. That usually gets their attention.
Mature neighborhoods offer a lot of advantages:
Usually, what you see is what … (3 comments)

My blog is as much about a philosophy of life and living as it is about real estate as a business. E.F. Shumacher subtitled his book SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL "Economics as if People Mattered" In the real estate industry we realize that people matter and that where they live matters. We now also have a larger responsiblity, I believe, to get them to consider HOW they live. Everyone in the developed world using less energy and resources makes it possible for those who have access to neither to experience a better life and to make the difference between their being able to having a roof overhead or not or for their children to eat or not.
