My recent post on Smoke Art got me thinking about 'negative space'. So, what is it? Negative space is that area around an image that is 'empty' and surrounds the 'postive space', or the subject.  When negative space surrounds or outlines the subject, it helps to define it, and draw the eye to the main subject.   Calling the negative space 'empty' doesn't necessarily mean 'blank' space, but rather the area that surrounds the subject of your image. This little experiment was SO MUCH FUN!  I hope you enjoy the images, they're different :)
I used incense sticks stuck in a baked potato, a black matte board behind it, and a flashlight to shine light on the smoke in order to create these images. The camera was on a tripod and they were shot with a small aperture, high speed, and low ISO (pronounced eye-so).  I used a remote shutter release to avoid camera shake. I took them in a darkroom (my kitchen at night!).

Catch Light - Specular Highlights in Photography Specular highlights are the bright spots of light found on shiny objects when lit by a light source. Catch light refers to that specular highlight in the eye of the subject. It can come from a natural source, such as the sun, or from a flash or lightbulb, or anything else that is reflected in the surface of the eye. Catch lights draw attention to the eyes of the subject, as seen below:

What's In YOUR Backyard? OK, I decided to stop whining about the weather, and go out and try to make it work for me. It was 17 degrees, with a light snow and the sun came out for a little while, so I went out to my backyard (bravely, I thought) to fool around and see what I could do to alleviate my boredom.

I have written a few tutorials on different methods for optimizing images in past posts, but lately have gotten a few questions on the subject.  I do not mind at all sharing my methods and ideas with others that want to learn more about optimizing their images.

Kool Kats From The Kalahari Meerkats, of course! These rambunctious little creatures are about the size of squirrel, and live in burrows in the Kalahri Desert and in parts of South Africa. They often share their burrows with mongoose, (whose family they are a part of), and ground squirrels.

High Dynamic Range Imaging, or HDR, allows for a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest parts of an image. In other words, it allows you create an image that looks alot more like the scene you actually saw, with more detail than the image straight out of the camera.

Koalas, contrary to popular belief, are not bears. They are marsupials, as are kangaroos, wallabies, and possums. A baby koala is called a "joey", and although they look soft and cuddly, their fur actually feels more like the wool of a sheep. Traditional 35mm cameras have an aspect ratio of 3:2. This is the the ratio between the width and height of the photograph. Photo frames are sized, 4X6, 5X7, 8X10, according to this ratio. Twelve teams from six countries came to Breckenridge to enter the competition, and the talent was phenomenal! 'Moonset' Behind Breckenridge, Colorado
 
A friend of mine has a townhouse in Breckenridge, Colorado, and on Friday, we went up there for another girl's weekend. It was the 20th Annual Ice Sculpture competition, and the town was packed with people.
We left late afternoon, and headed out Hwy 24 through South Park, then out Hwy 9 through Fairplay and Alma, up over Hoosier Pass, and down into Breckenridge. The scenery along the way is breathtaking!
