Pueblo - America's Home of Heroes In 1993 the US Congress proclaimed Pueblo, Colorado to be "America's Home Of Heroes". At that time, Pueblo held the distinction of being the only city in America with FOUR living recipients of the Medal of Honor: William J. Crawford (WWII), Carl L. Sitter and Raymond G. “Jerry” Murphy (Korea) and Drew D. Dix (Vietnam). The Medal of Honor is the highest military award that can be bestowed upon a member of the United States Armed Forces. The Colorado State Fair starts Friday, August 28th and runs through September 7 at the fairgrounds (1001 Beulah Ave) in Pueblo. In addition to the Rodeo, Monster Trucks, and Demolition Derby, Mutton Bustin', livestock shows, carnival rides and so much more; this year features a Live Shark Encounter and Lumberjack Show. This week I spent some time at the Pueblo Court House visiting the Motor Vehicle Office to get my husband's car titled. Now, I can sympathize with Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) workers, since I worked for a short time at the DMV in Connecticut. In fact, the monotony and sheer madness of dealing with the public caused me to join the Army, which I found a more appealing alternative (during the Vietnam War, no less). While working at the DMV, my policy had always been to try to get the customer's business done as quickly as possible so it wouldn't

Reading, Getting Into College, & Oktoberfest Have you heard about "The Big Read"? "The Big Read: All Pueblo Reads 2008" is a literary program designed to get everyone in Pueblo County reading and discussing one book at the same time each year. This year's community book selection is The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. Amy Tan will actually be in Pueblo at several events this month to help us celebrate. Additionally, there are 18 state-wide ballot questions that will need to be answered so long lines are expected on November 4, Election Day.
