My father was recently a victim of identity fraud. Thankfully he noticed something wrong and was able to stop the thieves before they did any damage to his credit.
The positive side to the story is that my family learned about credit freezes. Many times identify thieves will use your information to apply for new credit. This way they can have the new credit card sent to their address and by the time the victim finds out, it’s normally too late. There’s been a lot of talk about strategic mortgage defaults. Here’s the scenario: Bob Buyer purchases a home. After a few years the real estate market has a “correction” and the house is no longer worth what Bob paid for it. Even though he can still afford the payments, Bob decides it makes better economic sense to walk away from the house and let the bank foreclose.

It's no secret that banks are much stricter when qualifying you for a loan to buy a new house.
