Tax Credit Extended. You Mean I Can Buy a San Diego Home Today and Get the Credit? Unfortunately, no. The Federal tax credit extension is not meant for buyers who find a home today and want to buy it. You had to have a home purchase under contract by April 30th in order to potentially benefit from the extension. The extension ONLY applies to buyers who had a signed contract by April 30, but were unable to close escrow by the June 30 deadline. This has happened mainly because of delays with banks approving short sale transactions, which can take substantially more time

If you are buying a San Diego home and are planning to take advantage of the California home buyer tax credit of up to $10,000, don't forget to apply for the credit immediately after you close escrow. The Franchise Tax Board requires an application for the credit to be faxed within 2 weeks of closing escrow. The available tax credits are given on a first-come first-served basis, so the sooner you get the application in, the better. Bought a Home? Don't Forget Your Tax Credit Tomorrow, April 15, is the deadline for filing taxes. If you recently bought a home don't forget to see if you qualify for the tax credit. Home bought between January 1, 2009 and November 6, 2009 - First time home buyer (cannot have owned a home for 3 years prior to this home) - Primary residence - Maximum credit is $8000 - Single buyers with income up to $75,000 and married couples with incomes up to $150,000 can receive the full credit.
