marketing: How to Profit from Your Staging Expertise - 10/28/09 09:58 AM

If you are looking for a quick way to profit from your expertise, teleseminars are the way to go. Teleseminar: An informational presentation done over the phone, where people can attend (call in) from all over the world.
Why should you add teleseminars to your business repertoire?
You gain credibility by boosting your expert status Teaching a class in design gives you professional clout. You are instantly seen as the expert designer with all the answers. And the easiest way to present a class is by doing a teleseminar. It is not only more relaxing for you (because no one is looking at you, … (3 comments)

marketing: Would stagers be interested? - 05/19/09 08:28 PM
As I work on June's issue of my "Ezines Done For You!" program, I started wondering if I should offer this opportunity to stagers, as well.
My program takes over the whole ezine process and automates it - from writing the articles, designing the template and layout, and sending it to the designer's private list of subscribers.  Right now I do monthly ezines for interior decorators, and I have a separate version that I do for window treatment professionals.  It's been going incredibly well.  Many designers write to say that they get calls for business the day the ezine goes out … (7 comments)

marketing: Ezine Debate - 02/09/09 09:46 PM
I just got off the phone with a client - I write and design her monthly newsletter to her clients and prospects.  She is a designer.  We always start her newsletter with a brief personal note, and then include a few decorating articles and tips.
Today, her husband looked at this month's ezine and told her he thought she shouldn't include the personal note.  If she must, he said, it should go at the very bottom - so that if a reader didn't want to read it, they could ignore it.
I know the importance of the personal note.  I've seen … (16 comments)

marketing: Who is Your Ideal Client? - 09/07/08 09:19 PM
When asked who their ideal client is, many designers and realtors respond:
Owners of expensive homes or Rich people or Anyone who has money and is willing to pay
Here is the problem with believing that wealthy people are your ideal clients: It is an ineffective target because it is too broad. Choosing "high-end homes" or "wealthy homeowners" as your target does not give you a specific target. And without a clear, defined target, your design business will be less successful.
You must aim all of your marketing at a clearly defined target. Why?
Marketing becomes SO much easierWhen you … (9 comments)

marketing: Chocolate Flowers - 09/01/08 08:09 PM
Going Beyond Customer Service
While taking a break from an intense day of antiquing, my friends and I ducked into a quaint coffee shop to rest our weary bones. We each decided to order chai lattes - a black spiced tea with a coat of foam on top. The barista asked if we would like cinnamon and chocolate in the tea and, before I could raise an objection (chocolate in tea?), one of my friends responded affirmatively for all of us.A few moments later the lattes were ready and we were summoned to the counter to pick up our fancy drinks. … (19 comments)

marketing: Getting Creative in a Challenging Economy - 06/24/08 08:57 PM
Are you feeling like your clients and prospects are getting more wary about spending money? Are they taking longer to make decisions? Are you struggling to convince homeowners to purchase from you? If not, great! You are one of the lucky ones. Although "official" statistics do not yet show that consumer spending has dropped, many designers have seen a slow-down in spending on home furnishings. So what do we do? Many small business owners stick their heads in the sand and ignore it, hoping that what they've done in the past will start working again... soon. But studies show that if … (10 comments)

marketing: My Biggest Time Management Secret - 06/03/08 11:53 AM
I struggle with getting everything done, just like everyone else. All my life I've tried to cram too much into each day. Then I had a baby, and - well, those of you who have kids know that's like adding 3 more full-times jobs to your schedule.
So when people ask me how I get so much done, I try to think about what I'm doing that many others aren't.
One thing I've learned to do is delegate. I'm not perfect at this - I'm still learning to give things away. But each week that goes by, I let a little … (18 comments)

marketing: Relationship Marketing - 03/24/08 01:16 PM
Since moving into my new house just a few weeks ago, I have received dozens of postcards, brochures, and flyers from all kinds of decorating professionals. I actually AM in the market for some services, including landscaping, house cleaning, entertainment systems, etc. But I haven't been inspired to call any of the companies who sent their promotions.Until today.I got a personal note in my mailbox from a man who is in the landscaping business. Instead of trying to impress me with anonymous photos and generic headlines, he talked about himself. He talked about the economy. He said that he understood that … (22 comments)

marketing: Get Out of Your Overwhelm! - 02/07/08 07:56 PM
I know the feeling too well. I wish I could say that I don't, but I am prone to feeling overwhelmed. As business owners with so many external and internal factors to deal with - the economy, the housing market, our families, our own homes, the demands of our clients, backordered and discontinued products...(oh my gosh, I am feeling anxious just typing this list!), we are bound to feel overwhelmed and stressed sometimes. So what should we do?
Here is what I hear from the 'experts': Take a bubble bath. Get a massage. Read a book. Take a walk.

marketing: More on Dealing with "Competition" - 02/04/08 09:29 PM
Whenever you feel like there is too much competition - too many other designers or realtors in your area, too many do-it-yourself shows on tv, other professionals getting the big jobs that you want, etc. - you have to remember that you are coming from a place of "lack." The truth is: there is no lack in the universe. There is enough business for everyone. marketing: Attract Your Ideal Clients - the EASY WAY - 02/01/08 05:53 PM
I want to start this article with a quote from my favorite Law of Attraction teacher - Esther Hicks.
"You could sit for 15 minutes and conjure an image of yourself (with your ideal clients, in your ideal business). And if you could imagine it to the point that you bring yourself to some level of enthusiasm, you will have accomplished more in that 15 minutes of visualization than you could in 10 years of action."
Would you like to see how this works in attracting the type of clients that you really want? This is a simple exercise that will … (7 comments)
