While there is no definitive answer as to when or where this oil will wash up, there are organizations who are amassing support and volunteers to help keep this delicate ecosystem as clean as possible.  I just received an awesome flyer from another Facebook Group trying to get the word out on needs.  This one was mentioned earlier on another blog post, and now there is some action.
If you would like to help, please pass the word.  We need hair.  On this page you can find information on donating in Alabama, how to package, how to ship and … (2 comments)

baldwin county: The Eastern Shore, Baldwin County, Alabama - 04/06/10 07:47 PM
I get asked this question a lot:  What exactly is the Eastern Shore?  And the answer to that is a bit of geography.  The Eastern Shore, in Baldwin County, Alabama, is a series of cities, villages and just generally known areas all along the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay.  It begins just across Mobile Bay from the city of Mobile, Alabama in Spanish Fort at its northernmost municipality.  There's a lot of history is Spanish Fort, but another post will take us down that memory lane.  Just south of Spanish Fort, you travel into Daphne, Alabama.  Next … (4 comments)

baldwin county: 2025 North Sea Cliff Drive For Sale - Asking $99,000 - 11/13/09 09:30 PM
I may be small at 538 square feet, but I have plenty of space all dressed up like a little Italian Villa.  I have Faux painted walls that look like stone, I have a Trompe L'Oeill window painted in my galley kitchen, I have mahogany counter tops and I have the most luscious fabrics around gracing my windows and even my bathroom ceiling.  You can watch the world go by from my balcony that feels just like a little luxury treehouse, and at night the I-10 Bayway Bridge is all a twinkle with travelers.  I am so special and I … (3 comments)

baldwin county: Ida - The Day After in Daphne - 11/11/09 10:18 AM
See.  Ida was a true annoyance.  I knew she would be and I am thankful that she was an annoyance and not a full fledged November hurricane.   She was a little blustery, a lot of rain and quick to leave an visit someone else.  Today?  Beautiful outside.  See for yourselves.  I was really hoping some of her blusteriness would help me with my yard work and blow some, well a lot really, of the dying leaves away.  But no.  She couldn't even do that.
View from my front door.  Yes this really is today, November 11.  See all that green?  … (4 comments)

baldwin county: Information on Hurricane Ida - 11/08/09 06:24 PM
We experience these hurricanes regularly, but this one is just annoying.  Why now?  Grrrrr.  I digress.
Once a Hurricane enters the gulf, the Gulf of Mexico, it is anybody's guess where it will make landfall.  We find ourselves checking all sorts of weather pages on the Internet, waiting for updates from the weather channel, or interruptions to regular programming from our local stations.  Anything.  Any information that we can use, we are after.
I found a site several years ago that is the best at collecting all the information that is available and then some.  The gentleman who … (1 comments)

baldwin county: Hurricane Ida Heading to The Northern Gulf Coast - 11/08/09 12:26 PM
Just  when we think its over (hurricane season) a rebel forms in the lower Caribbean sea.  A rebel named Ida.  Looks like we all are going to be batting down the hatches on the northern gulf coast.  Some of the models are predicting a landfall near the southern tip of Baldwin County, my county, and so we prepare.  At least if the power goes out (right - if), when the power goes out, it won't be sweltering outside and we will survive without the need to deal with the excessive heat while we clean up afterwards.
Joy.  Personally, its … (5 comments)

baldwin county: A Short and Winding Road in Baldwin County - 06/24/09 10:38 AM
If you know me, you know there isn't a strange road that I won't turn onto and drive down, if I haven't been there before.   That's why I claim to know this count like the back of my hand.  In my many, many - okay, 32 years - of driving this county (and most of Mobile County, too), I just know where things are.
So, if someone I run into can point me in the direction of a road I've never been on, I'm going!  Especially, if there is the possibility of seeing something that needs to be explored, … (6 comments)

baldwin county: Beautiful Sehoy Subdivision in Daphne, Alabama - 03/20/09 12:40 PM
Sehoy in Daphne, Alabama is coming alive with Spring, from the bright green of new leaves on the trees and shrubs, to the blooming of flowers, so long hidden by winter, to the squeal of the children who've brought their bicycles and badmitton sets and kickballs out of their winter toy boxes.  The ducks on Lake Sehoy are out sunning and swimming and fishing and I keep watching for little yellow ducklings in a row, any day now to be following along in the first lessons they'll get from their parents in duck survival.  Its a beautiful place, peaceful and … (0 comments)

baldwin county: Down by the River....in Baldwin County - 10/09/08 03:48 PM
There's a place down near Fish River where a lovely subdivision has sprung up off the beaten path.  Sonora Place offers a rare opportunity to own a new home, built so beautifully well by Darrell Gooden, in Baldwin County, on at least an acre of land.  All the expected amenities are here:  underground utilities, city sewer, total electric; and the unexpected amenities:  the peace and serenity of a rural landscape, where peace and quiet reign, the unexpected appearance of deer in the fading twilight, the whispered scent of evergreen from the christmas tree farm next door.
Darrell Gooden has … (1 comments)

baldwin county: Why Buy an Rv Lot? - 04/23/08 02:24 PM
The latest trend in RVing is to buy a lot as opposed to renting.  Since  I am currently marketing Hidden Oaks at Weeks Bay, an upscale RV Resort in Baldwin County, I got to thinking...Why buy?  I can think of a couple of good reasons to consider purchasing a lot.
First, some of these park fees are pretty high.  Holy Guacamole!   Six hundred a month for a lot rental seems pretty extravagant to me, when all you have to show for that is a receipt.  Multiply that buy a full year and you're paying out $7,200, and you have a couple of receipts … (0 comments)

baldwin county: FSBO Follies with Dedra and Christi - 03/27/08 09:49 AM
Today, I am reflecting on working with FSBO's here in Baldwin County.  Boy, oh boy are they ever an adventure in and of itself!
Christi and I are usually on the phone or knocking on their doors withing a week of the sign going up in their yard, because we truly and deeply believe that these inexperienced sellers need assistance.    I have found two things to be true regarding their asking prices:
1.   FSBO properties are usually priced too high, or
2.   FSBO properties are usually priced too low.
How do they get there?  Sometimes it is the house around the … (1 comments)

baldwin county: Out and About in Fairhope - 03/26/08 10:09 AM
Christi and I spent last Saturday introducing ourselves in Country Woods in Fairhope.  Our goal was to say hello, spread a touch of Spring with a gift of spring flower seeds and leave.  All in all, we spent less than a minute at the door.
This was our first time to go door knocking, which we decided to do since our prospecting never has included face to face time in the neighborhood.  We've done mailings to our target farm and sphere of influence, we've made phone calls, and follow-ups and decided to add this face to face.
It was a nice neighborhood … (0 comments)

baldwin county: How did I get here? - 03/21/08 09:44 AM
Why do I do what I do?
After so many years in the Baldwin County public school system, I took a couple of years off to recharge.  I needed that time to re-energize, reflect and recover.   I loved teaching, I loved waking every morning and looked forward to greeting the day with each year's group of students.  But, after a time, my energy kept going out, with very little coming back in.  I was draining all my stores of energy and after a while, I realized that I was very close to empty.
My husband suggested that I give it up, and … (1 comments)
