Wilmington Does YouTube With Flash Mob, Supermarket, and Amtrak Station, All In Big Production Number - 03/25/12 03:53 PM
In an eight minute production by talent from Wilmington, Delaware you see such luminaries as the Next Great Baker, a singing official from the Mayor’s office, students from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts, all put together by a painting conservator from Winterthur Museum.

And if that’s not enough, it was shot on location at the Shop-Rite supermarket and the Biden train station (no extra charge for the chugging and clanging background noises). Great job Gang! (Sort of a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland, "Hey kids, let's put on a show" feeling!)

The Smyrna Rest Stop Will Welcome You As You Travel The Length of Delaware - 03/21/12 09:27 AM
I have recently been traveling downstate (as those of us in Wilmington see the situation-- and it’s hard to go very far traveling across a state  which is only 30 miles wide and 100 miles long) and decided to stop the other day at the Smyrna Rest Stop, a local feature since 1969.Always trimmed out with blooming flowers outside on its 60 acre site, its brightest decoration is the smile on 84 year old Margie Burns, who is in her 22nd year of working in the visitor’s center. Margie further brightens up the mantel with seasonal decorations (which come out of … (0 comments)

May You Thrive Like the Shamrock - 03/17/12 07:30 AM
I don’t know anything about the ‘Luck of the Irish,” but I do have a bit of a green thumb (don’t think that counts). For at least a decade, I have been nursing along a shamrock (oxalis) plant which was in one of those tiny pots when I bought it.  It now has a very large pot and loves it by the window in an unheated room. It loves it so much, that it has bloomed pretty consistently since I nudged it along. That’s pretty much like my business in real estate--keep giving it the right growing conditions and it chugs … (5 comments)

Shane Victorino's Fame Extends to a Blue Ribbon in the Philadelphia Flower Show - 03/12/12 08:42 AM
Who would have believed that The Flyin' Hawaiian would not only dominate in the Phillies outfield, but in last week's  Philadelphia International Flower Show?
In a category named Mailboxes and Lampposts, a mailbox full of "Phan-mail" for Shane Victorino won a blue ribbon for the Garden Club of Philadelphia.
The judges commented, "After the Phillies 2008 World Championship and five consecutive Division crowns, a deluge of Phanmail is delivered to Maui's #1 son, Shane Victorino.  Tropical humity, sun, and lava rock, hit a grand slam of lush plant material. Conveying "high hopes" in the spirit of Aloha, 'It's outta … (2 comments)

The Philadelphia International Flower Show Attracts the Suburban Crowd - 03/07/12 09:03 AM
The Philadelphia International Flower Show is in progress this week at the Convention Center in Center City with the theme of Hawaii:Islands of Aloha. A friend and I thought we would try taking the SEPTA train from Elwyn, Pennsylvania for a change and to eliminate driving in city traffic and paying city parking fees. That worked out pretty well, thanks to another friend who advised me to go after 2 pm, by which time some commuting students would be vacating their parking spaces at the station lot.
We arrived just as many chartered bus crowds were leaving, and only had a … (9 comments)

Howard Pyle Celebration Brings His Ghost, a Famous Wyeth Model, and Cakes Inspired by His Paintings - 03/03/12 05:46 PM
Today was Howard Pyle Day at the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, Delaware. A special exhibit of his paintings and illustrations ends this weekend, so there were some interesting events going on.
After looking at the artwork, I saw 3 chefs and some pretty fancy cakes. They were asked to create cakes interpreting Pyle’s artwork, and I am picturing 2 of these cakes.  One, by Liz Marden of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, was inspired by Pyle’s Mermaid. The other cake, created by Hotel DuPont pastry chef Michelle Mitchell and her assistant, shows a DuPont powder wagon which probably inspired some … (0 comments)

Carolyn Roland's Historic Homes E News for March, 2012 - 03/02/12 07:53 AM
March 5, 1804, Nathan Burrows, a farmer living near John Dickinson’s plantation outside Dover, Delaware wrote, “Tis with regret I acquaint you that your house was burnt down on Saturday last.” With these words, Dickinson discovered that his home had been accidentally destroyed by fire on Saturday, March 3, 1804. Exactly 208 years later, on Saturday, March 3, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the John Dickinson Plantation, located at 340 Kitts Hummock Road in Dover, Del., will commemorate the anniversary of the blaze with a program that explores both the details of the fire and Dickinson’s decision to rebuild … (2 comments)
