Open House for Important Historic Home in Wilmington - 07/28/12 08:28 AM
Circle Sunday, July 29 on your calendar. From 1 to 3 PM you will have a chance to find the answer to your dream of owning an important historic home. The Henry Webster House was built for a mill owner around the time of the revolution in what was then Brandywine Hundred, north of the City of Wilmington, Delaware. Since the 1930's, it has been a part of the City of Wilmington called Brandywine Hills.
Brandywine Hills is known for many stone Colonial Revival homes built in the 30's and 40's.  Not known to many people is that hiding in plain … (4 comments)

Early Census Records Tell Story of Freedom and Slavery - 07/25/12 03:26 PM
Back in Revolutionary War times, things were tough in Delaware. The millers in Brandywine Village were told by George Washington to hide their mill stones so that the Redcoats would not get them. Old George himself even took over what we now call the Hale-Byrnes House on White Clay Creek, south of Wilmington in 1777 and cleaned out the food the people in the area were storing to keep them over the winter.

This is just the background for a story told by the 1800 Census for Delaware. The first official Census had been done in 1790, and a certain … (0 comments)

Although the number of listings is down, closed sales for June 2012 are up 45 PERCENT! And pending sales are up almost 36% for the year to date. On top of all this good news, average days on the market are down 15% for the year to date.

I never promised you a rose garden, but here's one anyway!

New Castle County Delaware June 2012 Market Report - 07/17/12 09:42 AM

If buyers get the feeling that the house they are looking for is just not on the market yet, they can understand why by looking at the June 2012  Market Report for New Castle County, Delaware. There are more than 25% less properties available to look at than there were a year ago.
And if you ask why that is, look at the median sales price--for the year to date, that price has dropped from just over $198,000 to just over $179,000.  Because of the lower prices and the smaller market to choose from, sales contracts were up almost 14% … (0 comments)

$100 Reward Offered for Missing Man - 07/14/12 12:51 PM
Tales of Scandal and Scoundrels was the theme of the Town Tours and Village Walks in historic Kennett Square, Pennsylvania on Thursday night. Part of a series of programs held every summer on Thursday nights run by Chester County, the Kennett Square Borough Historical Commission always puts on a heck of a show, while “historical” characters throughout the town channel actual people and events.  This tour was no exception, and we were treated to a wide range of characters ranging from a troupe of gypsies skipping town in an old car, a police chief with a tale of a man who … (4 comments)

Early Life in Brandywine Hundred Tied to Historic Home for Sale - 07/09/12 09:11 AM
Early in the 1770's, miller John Marshall used stone removed from the banks of the Brandywine River to build a millrace (feeding water from the Brandywine to an offshoot meant to turn a mill wheel) to build his house(below, Lea-Derrickson House, now the home of the Junior League of Wilmington). After financial difficulties, it ended up belonging to Thomas Lea, another miller. At the time, the north side of the Brandywine Creek was not a part of the City of Wilmington, but in Brandywine Hundred. Wilmington had been chartered by England's King George II in 1739 but it dates back to … (4 comments)

Rockwood Ice Cream Festival Tries to Bring on the Cool - 07/07/12 10:26 AM
Today and tomorrow bring the reappearance of the Ice Cream Festival at Rockwood Park in Wilmington.  As a long-time volunteer from the "old original" festival in the 80's and 90's, I was interested in seeing what an outside organizer could do. Of course, it is the same man who brought back the Brandywine Arts Festival, so he has had experience in organizing such events.

I visited the event this morning, and although it was scheduled to start at 11 a.m., a lot of people opted for an early bird special and came at 10 a.m.  There was shuttle … (0 comments)
