brandywine hills: 250 year old ghost finds house still there! - 10/07/13 03:25 AM
Now I’m not saying that Henry Webster is haunting this house, but if he were to come  back, the poor guy would be 275 years old, and you just might hear his bones creak.  And now, this historic home is for sale at a greatly reduced price. Luckily, it's pretty quiet here in Brandywine Hills, on the edge of Wilmington, Delaware. The present owners of the Henry Webster House feel that he would probably like to linger in the formal gardens and enjoy all the fragrant boxwood and flowers. We think Webster would like the screened porch they added.

brandywine hills: Williamsburg Style Gardens and Historic Home Open House Sunday - 06/07/13 07:14 AM
When Colonial style homes became popular in the early twentieth century, the late 18th century Henry Webster house sat by itself on the southern edge of Brandywine Hundred  The house had belonged to a mill owner whose mill was on the Shellpot Creek, less than a block away from the present house. In the Brandywine tradition, this historic home for sale is stone, with 18" thick walls (approx.) and deep window sills. Re-imagined in the Colonial Revival Style, it was given a new floor plan by well known Wilmington architect George Pope in the 1930's when Brandywine Hills was created and … (2 comments)

Circle Sunday, July 29 on your calendar. From 1 to 3 PM you will have a chance to find the answer to your dream of owning an important historic home. The Henry Webster House was built for a mill owner around the time of the revolution in what was then Brandywine Hundred, north of the City of Wilmington, Delaware. Since the 1930's, it has been a part of the City of Wilmington called Brandywine Hills.
Brandywine Hills is known for many stone Colonial Revival homes built in the 30's and 40's.  Not known to many people is that hiding in plain … (4 comments)

brandywine hills: Rockwood Ice Cream Festival Tries to Bring on the Cool - 07/07/12 03:26 AM
Today and tomorrow bring the reappearance of the Ice Cream Festival at Rockwood Park in Wilmington.  As a long-time volunteer from the "old original" festival in the 80's and 90's, I was interested in seeing what an outside organizer could do. Of course, it is the same man who brought back the Brandywine Arts Festival, so he has had experience in organizing such events.

I visited the event this morning, and although it was scheduled to start at 11 a.m., a lot of people opted for an early bird special and came at 10 a.m.  There was shuttle … (0 comments)

brandywine hills: Historic 18th C Brandywine Hills Stone Millers House Now For Sale - 06/23/12 12:30 AM
The Webster Family bought the land on which this historic home sits in the 18th Century, from the Talley family. These mid-seventeenth century settlers had owned 400 acres south of Naamans Creek, near Delaware's northern border with Pennsylvania. Through the years, only 4 families have owned the Webster property. Only remnants of Henry Webster's grist mill remain in the woods nearby, but the Shellpot Creek still flows through Brandywine Hundred into the Delaware River near Edgemoor,  Although the mill race that once powered the mill wheel disappeared long ago, it has been replaced by the present Brandywine Hills neighborhood.

brandywine hills: Wilmington Garden Day a Great Treat - 05/09/11 09:13 AM

Wilmington Garden Day was this past Saturday, an annual event done to benefit children's charities. We started out at WynEden in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. It was said to be inspired by Muir Woods, in Marin County, California. Above are just 2 highlights from this property, a bamboo forest and a one acre pond, and  beautiful orchids (Cypripedium reginae, I think).

Next are 2 completely different gardens, Fair Hill Farm, in Chadds Ford, an  expansive country spread with areas ranging from a garden built around an old barn foundation, to a formal boxwood garden, to a Royal Paulownia … (1 comments)
