historic and older homes in delaware: Follies in Winterthur Garden a Playful Touch - 04/01/18 03:05 PM
On display at Winterthur Museum until January 5, 2019, Follies--Architectural Whimsey in the Garden is a new exhibit which has been placed outside in nature, rather than inside this world-famous museum of period interiors and furnishings. (photo taken through Neoclassical Folly)
I had been walking in the gardens this past week and watching construction happen in "real time" and had a chance to speak to one of the craftsmen for some inside info.  As a Realtor, I had been curious about the building permit posted at the Mirrored Folly (garden follies have a long tradition in England). Does this mean a demolition … (3 comments)

historic and older homes in delaware: Help is here to preserve your Delaware building - 11/16/17 01:18 PM
Thanks to Debbie Martin, Historic Preservation Planner for the City of Wilmington for the following update:
The Delaware Preservation Fund has announced the deadline for its next round of mini-grants for historically designated properties (individual properties or districts).  December 15, 2017 is the date, and information on all of their programs can be found at http://preservationde.org/delaware-preservation-fund/

They have small grants as well as low-fee bridge loans for larger preservation projects.  I was reminded in looking over their letter that work in historic cemeteries, such as stone maintenance, is an eligible activity.  Plenty of headstones that need righting out there!  Historically designated statuary, … (0 comments)

This weekend was perfect weather for the Brandywine Festival of the Arts, running the weekend after Labor Day pretty much since 1991. We have had this event with rainy weather, and dry weather with mud from a previous storm,  but the weather smiled on this event for 2017.
There were about 250 exhibitors, ranging from painters, printmakers, woodworkers, metal workers (i.e. these bells), jewelry makers, gourmet food purveyors and children's toys and clothes for all, as well as the traditional event t-shirts.
As always, people brought their dogs and watering bowls were available for these pets, since it was a warm day. The … (0 comments)

The good news is that pending sales are up almost 20%, and new listings in February were up almost 5%. Buyers are out there, but they are not finding the houses they are looking for.
The moral of the story for sellers is--call your Realtor® and get your market analysis as well as an evaluation of any defects … (2 comments)

This fabled Historic Home, the Chambers Mansion, was built c. 1894 for Miss Marion Clark on 16 acres is in an area named Gordon Heights by an earlier landowner from Scotland, Elliot McNair. The Clark land had been a park with a picnic area, situated high above the Delaware River. It was a lovely spot to build her Queen Anne home with not only 2 balconies and turrets, but also a widow’s walk accessed through the attic with a view of the land extending down to the River. At the turn of the last century, the Delaware River shoreline was a … (2 comments)

historic and older homes in delaware: March 2014 Historic Homes Newsletter - 02/28/14 04:08 AM
March 2014 Historic Homes Newsletter

The Alrichs House in Port Penn, Delaware is being offered for free.  It was featured in the March issue of This Old House Magazine. This c. 1760 home is a rare survival of Delaware’s Dutch heritage, built by Peter Alrich, the grandson of a settler who arrived in Delaware around 1657. The house is presently owned by Delaware Wildlands as part of a 300 acre parcel which they wish to preserve. Preservationists and archaeologists are concerned that offering this home free to anyone who moves it somewhere else would destroy the context of the … (2 comments)
