historic home: Greenville Home Featured by Historic Property Specialist - 09/06/17 01:44 PM
There's no need to trek more than 15 minutes from the Wilmington Amtrak Station to reach this bucolic setting in Greenville, Delaware.

The James Armor House property once held a toll-keeper's house on the Lancaster Turnpike (possibly the earliest part of the house, c. 1800). If you were bringing wheat to the mills on Wilmington's Brandywine Creek or driving cattle to market from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to the north and west, this was an important route. They didn't have DELDOT back then to take care of the roads, so it was your toll that did the job.

Now that this area is becoming … (4 comments)

First of all, if you are wondering where to celebrate July 4 in Delaware, check out Delaware Today’s list. There will be walking tours, children’s games, a film about Caesar Rodney’s historic ride for independence at the Old State House, and the National Bell Ringing at 2 on the Fourth. The Bells will also be rung at Immanuel Church on the Green in Old New Castle at the same time. A big celebration is being planned on the Wilmington waterfront in Tubman-Garrett Park starting at … (2 comments)

historic home: Early Delaware Historic Home a Rare Survival in Suburban-like Setting - 12/19/12 12:06 AM
For a slice of Delaware history, consider the historic Henry Webster House at 4311 Marlowe Road, Wilmington, Delaware.

This 4 bedroom, 2 bath stone home was built for Henry Webster and his Swedish wife, Sarah Stedham, between 1760-70, calculating by his wedding in 1755 at Old Swede's Church in Wilmington, and the basement joists, which are made of trees, an early construction method,  not milled lumber.
The first mill on the Shellpot Creek, built in 1662, was owned by Jouse Andriaesen, called Herring Rocks. It later became part of the William Sellers estate, which is just down the road … (2 comments)

historic home: Yuletide at Winterthur Offers New Perspectives on the Past - 11/26/12 02:05 AM
Yuletide at Winterthur-  A Feast for the Eyes is now on view at this historic lovely former home of Henry Francis duPont, just north of Wilmington, Delaware. Having been a volunteer guide there in the distant past, I like to see what changes they make every year to keep this tour fresh.

The tour starts in the courtyard, which hosts a marketplace surrounded with exteriors of historic buildings in what was once a badminton court, when it was a family home. Then, for a reversal of past tours, the first interior is the duPont Dining Room. And instead of a … (2 comments)

historic home: Historic Stone Wilmington Colonial Home Has New Price - 11/21/12 03:29 AM
This four bedroom, two bath Henry Webster home has a fascinating history.  Built in the late 1700's as the dwelling of a mill owner, in the 1930's it became a part of a new section of Wilmington called Brandywine Hills. In the style of the time, the home's interior was turned into a Colonial Revival masterpiece, The cramped box-winder stairs were removed, and a more gracious stairway was constructed.

Now priced at $370,000, a complete description of this Wilmington Delaware historic home  can be found here.

historic home: Winterthur Museum and Gardens Show Off Their Peonies - 05/22/12 01:53 AM
Yes, Historic Home fans will love all the over 100 period rooms incorporated into Winterthur Museum and love seeing its gardens outside of Wilmington, Delaware,  but on Sunday, I saw the peony collection as it was in full bloom. With the quirky weather, you never know when the perfect day will be, but the end of May was ideal for me. Enjoy some of the pictures from this fantastic garden begun early in the 20th Century by Henry Francis duPont.

historic home: House and Mill in West Grove to Host Open House Sunday June 5 - 05/29/11 11:08 AM

The Ruston-McDowell House and Mill (c. 1790) have had some exciting changes.  Come to our open house Sunday, June 5, 2011 from 1-3 PM and see what dedicated artisans did to refinish floors, sensitively paint the walls and millwork, AND install a gorgeous bathroom with frameless shower doors, subway tiles, and refinished claw foot tub. The rest of the house has been painted and floors refinished.

There are working fireplaces in kitchen, living room and bedroom, and the walk-in fireplace chimney in the 1790 secition is capped. The center and west sections date to the first years … (2 comments)

historic home: Historic Newark House to be Open Sunday 1-3 - 03/23/11 08:04 AM

Once part of a property which included an orchard, Fruitland Farms is an early 19th C home offering many advantages, including being part of an "Over 55" community, but with no age restrictions for this home which existed well before the rest of the community. Paper Mill Falls Assn. provides lawncare, snow and leaf removal.
Concentrate on enjoying the view of the pond from the porch and forget about lawncare. Of stone construction there is a frame section on one side. It features original box-winder stairs, fielded panelling in the master bedroom, and extensive built-ins, so storage is no problem. The full attic still … (4 comments)

Close to the University of Delaware, restaurants and shops, and Karpinski Park and the trail around the Newark Reservoir, this $349,900 3 bedroom, Newark, Delaware, home offers a great opportunity for those wanting to spend weekends at the shore and not cutting grass. As part of an "over 55" community, but excluded from age restrictions, Peter's Fruit Farm gets the grass cutting and snow shoveling included with community dues.
Easy days--sit on the large screened porch, catch the breezes, and imagine what it would have been back 100 years ago, with nearby neighbors from town stopping by Peter's Fruit … (3 comments)

historic home: Spring at Winterthur - 04/08/10 10:36 AM
We here in the Brandywine Valley are lucky to have some great public gardens, which are the upside of it being the home since 1800 of the DuPont family and their black powder fortunes.
I recently visited Winterthur, the historic (1830 house with later additions adding rooms from all original 13 states) former home of Henry Francis duPont (1880-1969), Winterthur Museum and Country Estate. I can remember visiting the 60 acres of gardens when Mr. duPont was still alive, and seeing a slide show in the visitor's center which traced his daily walks through the grounds, pointing out to groundskeepers which walking paths should be open … (2 comments)

historic home: A Trip to Winterthur Museum and Gardens - 08/15/09 11:13 AM
Winterthur, an American country estate, is the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969), an avid antiques collector and horticulturist. In the early 20th century, H. F. du Pont and his father, Henry Algernon du Pont, designed Winterthur in the spirit of 18th- and19th-century European country houses.
A visit there today proved to be most interesting, one of the reasons being I thought I knew the paths through the gardens. Well, they moved them, actually a good idea for a hot afternoon, because I was able to stay in lots of shady areas. They have also added a feature--a small … (2 comments)
