wilmington delaware: Too chilly for most means more space at park for me! - 04/18/20 04:41 PM
Nearby Bellevue State Park is a nice place to walk, especially if it is not crowded. The last time I was there on a sunny, warm day, the parking lot was almost full and one had to dodge walkers on the paths in order to stay a safe distance away. But today was different. With the temps hovering just below 50 degrees and a stiff breeze blowing at times, it was only about 1/5 as crowded as it was the last time I wandered around the park.
What was different today? For one, horses in the field around the horse training facility … (7 comments)

wilmington delaware: Wilmington's Flower Market a Tradition - 05/12/17 06:22 PM
A Wilmington tradition since 1921, the Flower Market is held the weekend of  Mother's Day with proceeds benefiting children's charities.  It offers plenty of opportunities for dads and kids and daughters and sons to find gifts for Mom.
There are plants of all types, ranging from nursery grown seedlings to those donated from local gardens (Thinning out plants? Bring them here). Back "in the day," many local estates donated plants from their greenhouses, but there are not many of those still operating. There are herbs, veggies, hanging baskets, perennials and ground covers.(right-view of grounds from top of Rockford Tower). There are … (1 comments)

wilmington delaware: Easter at Winterthur Gardens - 04/20/14 07:27 AM

Easter 2014 at Winterthur Museum and Gardens looked quite different from a few years back. I checked my picture files, and 4 years ago the azaleas and rhododendrum were in full bloom on April 4. The one thing I see in common is that the white trilliums were in full bloom at the beginnings of the month, as they are now. And the deep purple ones seem to be waiting for better weather. It was around 50 degrees this morning, with a wind about 20 mph, so you can see the problem!  The bluebells were in their glory, after waiting … (2 comments)

wilmington delaware: The First Snowfall in Delaware for 2012 - 01/21/12 06:19 AM
Although we had some light snow in October 2011, last night brought a couple of inches of wet snow in Wilmington. It was pretty icy around 9 a.m., but by noon it had turned to a manageable icy layer with enough water under it to scoop to the side of the driveway. And my lovely South Graylyn Crest neighbor had used his snow blower earlier to do the front sidewalks of about half a dozen houses from his house to mine, so all I had to shovel was the driveway and path to my door.
Then I looked out my back window … (6 comments)

wilmington delaware: Hale-Byrnes House Holds Holiday Open House, Complete With Costumed Interpreters and A Goat Leg - 12/07/11 11:08 AM
December 3, the Hale-Byrnes House in Stanton, Delaware, held an open house. This mid-18th Century home is actually lived in by it’s curator, Kim Burdick, and her family. Situated on the banks of the Christina Creek, I can’t say I am envious, especially when storms push the creek up to the house. For a quick history lesson, you can check http://www.halebyrnes.org/history.html. For a visual history lesson, you can check out the pictures I took Saturday of the weavers, spinners, and re-enactors from Hazlett’s Delaware Regiment. An authentic cook-out was taking place down on the creek as the Regiment members cooked a … (0 comments)

wilmington delaware: Gardens To Die For--Or At Least To Make You Extremely Jealous - 09/15/11 03:46 PM
The Delaware Center for Horticulture has announced the winners of the 2011 City Gardens Contest.   Since I was one of the many judges for the Flower Garden Category, I am sharing with you pictures I took of the top 2 winners. On the left are some of the flowers in Becky McLaughlin's garden, which wraps around 4 sides of her corner apartment building. It is amazing that this tenant has totally transformed such a large space.  The next picture is just a small corner of  Martha Ann Szczerba's garden, which wraps around 3 sides of her duplex.

wilmington delaware: Wilmington's Rodney Square Named to National Register of Historic Places - 09/08/11 04:50 AM

A time traveler from 1910 might have quite a surprise to find that the brownstone Courthouse that once stood between Tenth and Eleventh, Market and King Streets was gone, as well as some of the prominent residences that once stood in this area north of the bustling marketplace on Second Street were all gone.
Thanks to John J. Raskob, an assistant to P. S. duPont and proponent of the City Beautiful movement which had taken hold across the nation, the 30 year old Courthouse was considered an unfit companion to the  DuPont Company's 1913 office building on Market Street. … (0 comments)

wilmington delaware: Riverfront Blues Festival Has Wilmington Jumpin' - 08/06/11 06:10 AM

Last night was the first of 3 days of the Riverfront Blues Festival on the Christina Riverfront in Wilmington. The big stage had Smokin' Joe Kubek and then the James Cotton Band. But in between the big acts, the side stage was, in my opinion, the place to be. You could get up close and really see the action. The two bands above are Kenny Jones and my favorite, the Randy Lippincott Band http://randylippincott.com/band-bio/ . That's Randy in the hat and the FABULOUS Smokin' Joey "Hotbox" Simon on harmonica. We had heard the band at … (2 comments)

wilmington delaware: Water Garden Tour and Dances With Herons - 07/24/11 09:10 AM

Saturday brought the 2011 Water Garden Tour sponsored by Gateway Garden Center and The Delaware Center for Horticulture. My friend Brenda and I were looking for ideas, and they certainly presented themselves courtesy of some hard-working and talented gardeners. The first pond was in Hockessin, Delaware and was designed by a woman who has done professional landscaping. You can see flowering rush, chameleon plant, lobelia and lotus in this rock rimmed pond fed by a waterfall, all very naturalistically.
The second pond, in Landenberg, Pennsylvania, had a pond with lotus and koi (named King Louie and Kyoko)  all at … (15 comments)

wilmington delaware: Wilmington Delaware's Christina Riverfront Steps Up Its Game - 07/18/11 12:32 PM
A stroll along Wilmington Delaware's Riverfront on Sunday morning found a peaceful scene, with joggers, bikers, walkers, and the Riverfront Wilmington Business Improvement District bicycle patrol covering the vast expanse between the train station and the Environmental Center to the south.
A new feature is the display of birdhouses that are designed by Wilmingtonian Thomas F. Burke. They do not yet have descriptions on them, but I think the 2 above are supposed to be a chapel and the clubhouse at Augusta National. They are said to cost from $3000 to … (2 comments)

wilmington delaware: Wilmington Garden Day a Great Treat - 05/09/11 09:13 AM

Wilmington Garden Day was this past Saturday, an annual event done to benefit children's charities. We started out at WynEden in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. It was said to be inspired by Muir Woods, in Marin County, California. Above are just 2 highlights from this property, a bamboo forest and a one acre pond, and  beautiful orchids (Cypripedium reginae, I think).

Next are 2 completely different gardens, Fair Hill Farm, in Chadds Ford, an  expansive country spread with areas ranging from a garden built around an old barn foundation, to a formal boxwood garden, to a Royal Paulownia … (1 comments)

wilmington delaware: Earth Day a Great Success in Wilmington - 04/23/11 03:44 AM

April 21 saw a burst of Earth Day activity in Rodney Square in Downtown Wilmington, Delaware. In honor of the occasion, a new button of the IN series was one of the take-homes for all who attended.
I saw some familiar faces hosting displays, including the Delaware Center for Horticulture, and  old friend Dee Durham and her daughter Lauren of Brandywine Sprouts with petitions to ban plastic bags in Delaware. The theme is BYOB (bring your own bag)
Rodney Square was looking its Spring best and bustling with people on their lunch hours and school groups getting extra points for … (4 comments)

wilmington delaware: My First Look at the Restored Queen Theater - 04/16/11 04:51 AM

Starting out as a 1 story hotel, The Indian Queen, in 1789, Wilmington's Queen Theater grew to 3 stories in 1847, then  became the 5 story Clayton House hotel in 1871. In 1916 it was transformed into a movie theater with seating for 2000. For years, I remember passing by the back of this vacant building (which showed its last film in 1959) and seeing the outline of the stairways to the various levels on the brick exterior and wondering what it was like inside. Several years ago, a historic tour of the dilapidated interior proved it to be a scary place. … (3 comments)

wilmington delaware: Rockwood Mansion Victorian Era Servant Speaks To The Present - 03/21/11 09:45 AM
Sara Valentine, an expert in the life and duties of a Victorian-era servant, spoke Sunday at the Victorian Lecture series given by the Friends of Rockwood (http://www.friendsofrockwood.org/architecture.html) at Rockwood Museum in Wilmington, Delaware.
The stern woman in the full length photo to her right is Sarah Maguire, who was the head housemaid at the mansion in the last quarter of the 19th century. Sara said the highest ranking house servant was the butler, who arranged all schedules for the rest of the staff, which also consisted of a cook, 2nd housemaid, laundress, and 2 black servants. It is interesting that although … (2 comments)
