Limited Power of Attorney - 01/28/08 03:11 PM
I was reading a blog by Karen Monsour and some others that had problems with powers of attorney.  These seem to be for limited powers and I am guessing that the people signing them didn't understand the "limited" part.  At every closing I have been to here both the seller and buyer sign limited power of attorney.  I often wonder what would happen if the people won't sign the power of attorney.  The closing people, lender and so on want these to put in missing dates and initials in case they were missed at closing.

Willoughby Boat To Go - 01/23/08 03:58 PM
Finally.  The eyesore will be gone.  The eyesore is a capsized boat off a pier in Little Bay.  It can be seen just before you go into the tunnel off I64.  Of course nothing happens fast in boatland.  You have to find the owner (not like looking for the owner of a car).  If the owner isn't found then a notice is posted on the boat.  After two weeks with no response the city will haul the boat away.  Hopefully they will do some recycling before it goes to the landfill.

Virginia Beach Owes Taxes To Virginia Beach - 01/21/08 07:02 PM
What happens when the Commissioner of Revenue sends the Virginia Beach Development Authority (VBDA) a tax bill for $14,000?  Well you say you are a part of the city and don't pay taxes.  That is what happened recently when the city bought the golf course and took over the running of the Virginia Beach National Golf Club (what was TPC).  When the course was bought, the VBDA said they would pay all customary operating costs.  Well, they decided they were part of the city and exempt from taxes and did not pay the bill.  After all they own title to the conference … (0 comments)

Ceritified Teachers Awards Reduced - 01/21/08 06:47 PM
If you are a teacher and earned your national certification and were expecting money from the state, don't spend it yet.  The state is is only giving $4,311.74 out of $5,000 and $2,155.57 out of $2,500.  The reason for the shortfall is that more teachers earned National Board Certification than the state budgeted.  Virginia Beach has the same problem but they ponied up the money to pay the teachers the shortfall.  Lets hope the state does better budgeting next year.

Blighted Homes - 01/21/08 06:40 PM
Portsmouth has joined Norfolk in asking the legislature for more power in dealing with blighted properties.  As of now, the state allows properties that are vacant but secure to stay that way and sets a $25.00 registry fee.  This gives the owners no incentive to fix up a home.  A vacant home devalues a neighborhood by about $7,500 by some estimates.  If you have a bunch, it will devalue it even more.  The cities are asking to charge the owners of vacant homes $2,500 a year as well as making the owners submit a rehabilitation plan.  If the renovation is not completed the … (0 comments)
