houses: Tunnel Plan Backed - 05/03/08 05:06 PM
Regional lawmakers backed expansion of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel but have no plan to pay for it. Teh commitment to enlarge the tunnel is at least a step in the right direction. A bigger step would be for the legislature to man up and find a way to pay for the billions of dollars of need road infrastructor needed in our area. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads. houses: Navy Wife Gets High Tech Wheelchair - 05/03/08 04:59 PM
Deanna VanHook has a high tech wheelchair that Tricare, the military insurance program, paid for. The payment came after a two year legal battle with Tricare. The battle won't set a precident and paralyzed military members won't be able have them paid for. The iBot is a $24,000 high tech wheelchair and allows Deanna to change light bulbs. At that price, you can see why Tricare fights tooth and nail to keep anyone from getting one. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads. houses: Mummichogs Is A Canary? - 05/03/08 04:49 PM
That is what they are called. Mummichogs are th canarys of the fish world. Scientists use them as an indicator of the overall environmental health in a specific waterway. In our case, the Elizabeth River. The fish are small, don't go very far and eat worms and algae. They in turn are fish food for bigger fish. There are several toxic spots in the river and they were tested recently. At one hot spot, next to an old creosote plant, 90% of the tested fish had tumors. Along the river that weren't known hot spots, the fish came up pretty normal

houses: Spirit Gets A Facelift - 05/03/08 04:16 PM
How do the the sailors from Naval Operation Base (NOB) spend their evenings? On the Spirit of Norfolk of course. The Spirit boats are a dining and entertainment attraction for both locals and tourists. If you have not tried it yet please do as it is a super way to spend your evenings in Norfolk. To keep the sailors happy, the Spirit of Norfolk recently undewent a $350k facelift. The money was spent on the ship to make it look all new again. The owners didn't mess with a good thing but made changes that were worth the money such as replacing the carpets,

houses: Developers Cut Costs and Features - 05/03/08 04:01 PM
What happens to new homes sites when the economy slows down? Well the developers here in Virginia Beach find ways to compete. How do they do that once the plans are drawn at the city? Very carefully. Alan Resh is selling homes at Bonnie's Quay and they are not selling. He went back to the city and asked to change the plans for the homes. They went from garaged homes to smaller, narrower homes. They needed to find a way to build nine more homes and that is the plan they came up with. Other developers are facing similiar problems and

houses: Mahi Mah's New Chef - 04/26/08 10:38 AM
Do know who Otto Borischs is? My guess would be the new executive chef at Mahi Mah in Virginia Beach. This oceanfront eatery is the place to go for good food and Ottos' presence should only make it better. He spent time in the Navy, the Culinary Institute of America and had an appearance on the second season of "Top Chef". This restaurant can feed up to 3,000 people a day in mid tourist season and can be quite busy. Maui Mah has some great food and Otto has come up a new one called "country fried squid". I will leave

Who are Chesapeake's' newest voters? Why they are high school students. The Women's Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce conducted a three day drive in the Chesapeake Hight schools to register students to vote. It seemed to work as hundreds of students signed up to vote. Hopefully they will be as anxious to vote come Sept. http://www.denisesellschesapekae.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads. houses: New Method For Home Valuations On The Water - 04/26/08 10:03 AM
Some people are upset with the City Assessor Maria Kattmann. She has a new approach for assessing waterfront properties this year. Some of the assessments went up 200 percent. I bet the phone was ringing off the hook at her office. The approach seems to make sense but you would think maybe a gradual increase would have been better received. She values the properties depending on the type of water. Of course big river views get bigger assessments then small tidal creek views do. So far so good. She may have some more explaining to do but the approach from here

houses: Craigslist Not Just For Real Esate - 04/22/08 04:18 PM
I put my listings on Cragslist and I am sure you do to but if you use Craigslist for anything other than real estate be careful of the police in Suffolk, Va. The police there used Cragslist as a directory and and set up a phony bachelor pad. You know where this is going don't you. Well the police staged a sting operation and arrested three ladies of the night. The police sifted through the ads and there were even discounts offered for our service members. How kind of these women to include our service members. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL

houses: Little Creek Sailors Love Aragona - 04/22/08 04:06 PM
Where do sailors from Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk/Virginia Beach want to live? Why in Aragona of course? Where is Aragona? It is right about there on the map? Only minutes from the front gate and close to the Bay, Pembroke Mall and the interstates. What is Aragona? It is the original suburb for Norfolk and it is what made Virginia Beach. Originally it was farmland in the Bayside area of Princess Anne County (Virginia Beach didn't exist yet) and turned into a sprawling subdivison of over 3,200 homes 52 years ago. Where did Aragona get its name? From John Aragona of

houses: GEOCACHE In Virginia Beach Schools? - 04/08/08 12:28 PM
What does Geocaching and third graders at Princess Anne Elementary school in Virginia Beach have in common? Well for starters, their teacher, Sarah D'Amato. She put together an interesting project by purchasing some GPS units with her own money and the help of the PTA. She then organized a pirate style treasure hunt complete with capes and eye patches. The students used the GPS units to locate hidden "treasure chests" decorated with a cross-bone and skull. The students were paired up as a team. One used the GPS and the other student marked the spots off on a log. Sounds like a good

houses: 1 Million Dollars An Acre - 04/08/08 11:58 AM
Now we finally know how much the Giant Square Shopping Center at the corner of Independence Blvd and Witchduck Rd is worth. The 12 acre lot in Virginia Beach was recently sold to Lowes for $13.5 million dollars. Merchants still in the center have until Aug. 31, 2008 to find a new place. This is the third Lowes store in Virginia Beach. For personnel stationed at the Little Creek Amphibious Base it will mean they will not have to travel so far to buy the do-it-your self supplies they might need. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia

houses: New Police Chief Named - 04/08/08 11:47 AM
Finally Chesapeake gets a new police chief. His name is Kevin Webster and he is a 26 year veteran of the force right here in Chesapeake. Yes he is home grown so to speak. He is also the first black police chief and some say that couldn't have come to soon. The local Fraternal Order of The Police and the Chesapeake Public Safety Alliance pushed to have someone within the department to be hired. Chief Wright has some department issues to deal with and hopefully he will deal with them head on and smartly. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for

houses: First Landing State Park - 04/07/08 07:14 PM
Virginia Beach has a Master Jet Base called Oceana Naval Jet Base in the middle of the city. Go figure. Well down the road a bit is a piece of quiet serenity that is just outside Ft Story, which is an operating army base. On your next visit come and check this place out. Don't worry if it is the 60's outside because a half mile or so inside the park it warms a 10 to 15 degrees in its own little micro climate. First Landing State Park is located near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay close to the spot

houses: Tax Rate May Go Down - 04/04/08 08:34 AM
Homeowners in Portsmouth may get a bit of a treat in their stockings this year as the city council is weighing a 5-cent reduction in the tax rate. That is because the assessments have risen an average of 5.5%. The tax reduction would still mean that the city has the highest tax rate in the area at $1.21 per $100 of assessed value. The council is working on giving public safety employees a 4% and 3% to other city workers. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.
