mls: The Trains Are Coming To Portsmouth - 05/14/08 03:02 PM
If you think traffic is bad in Portsmouth now,, wait a bit.  Regular train service to the new APM teminal is about to begin.  So far the trains are arriving three times a week and are only bringing in materials not bringing any out.  Norfolk Southern will be doing the bulk of the hard lifting.

mls: Internet Advertising - 05/12/08 08:04 PM
Anyone have any good thoughts on how to spend money on internet advertising?  We are spending money on print and it is not working.  Trying to get my broker to change to spending money on the internet is difficult because you can't really see it like you can print advertising.  Would a PPC be good or just getting a web site and paying for good SEO a better idea?  Suggestions are really welcome.  I am selling new homes in Chesapeake, Va at Westchester Estates.   Come on out and see me.

mls: Navy Wife Gets High Tech Wheelchair - 05/03/08 04:59 PM
Deanna VanHook has a high tech wheelchair that Tricare, the military insurance program, paid for.  The payment came after a two year legal battle with Tricare.  The battle won't set a precident and paralyzed military members won't be able have them paid for.  The iBot is a $24,000 high tech wheelchair and allows Deanna to change light bulbs.  At that price, you can see why Tricare fights tooth and nail to keep anyone from getting one.

mls: Mummichogs Is A Canary? - 05/03/08 04:49 PM
That is what they are called.  Mummichogs are th canarys of the fish world.  Scientists use them as an indicator of the overall environmental health in a specific waterway.  In our case, the Elizabeth River.  The fish are small, don't go very far and eat worms and algae.  They in turn are fish food for bigger fish.  There are several toxic spots in the river and they were tested recently.  At one hot spot, next to an old creosote plant, 90% of the tested fish had tumors.  Along the river that weren't known hot spots, the fish came up pretty normal  … (0 comments)

mls: Spirit Gets A Facelift - 05/03/08 04:16 PM
How do the the sailors from Naval Operation Base (NOB) spend their evenings?  On the Spirit of Norfolk of course.  The Spirit boats are a dining and entertainment attraction for both locals and tourists.  If you have not tried it yet please do as it is a super way to spend your evenings in Norfolk. To keep the sailors happy, the Spirit of Norfolk recently undewent a $350k facelift.  The money was spent on the ship to make it look all new again.  The owners didn't mess with a good thing but made changes that were worth the money such as replacing the carpets, … (2 comments)

mls: New Method For Home Valuations On The Water - 04/26/08 10:03 AM
Some people are upset with the City Assessor Maria Kattmann.  She has a new approach for assessing waterfront properties this year.  Some of the assessments went up 200 percent.  I bet the phone was ringing off the hook at her office.   The approach seems to make sense but you would think maybe a gradual increase would have been better received.  She values the properties depending on the type of water.  Of course big river views get bigger assessments then small tidal creek views do.  So far so good.  She may have some more explaining to do but the approach from here … (0 comments)

mls: First Landing State Park - 04/07/08 07:14 PM
Virginia Beach has a Master Jet Base called Oceana Naval Jet Base in the middle of the city.  Go figure.  Well down the road a bit is a piece of quiet serenity that is just outside Ft Story, which is an operating army base.  On your next visit come and check this place out.  Don't worry if it is the 60's outside because a half mile or so inside the park it warms a 10 to 15 degrees in its own little micro climate.
First Landing State Park is located near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay close to the spot … (3 comments)

mls: Waterside To Go? - 03/30/08 01:25 PM
Once the main attraction downtown, Waterside is a victim of redevelopment.  This used to be the only safe place to go downtown.  Now there is MacArthur Mall, upscale restaurants and entertainment spots to go to.  The mall is still full of business's but the people aren't coming like they used to.  The mall has been reinvented several times and looks like it may be reinvented one more time.

mls: Three Unlikely Suspects - 03/30/08 01:09 PM
What were Al Gore, Rev. Al Sharpton and Pat Robertson all doing in Virginia Beach last week?  (Well, we know what Pat Robertson was doing).  Well believe it or not they were making a commercial against global warning.  All three got together at 57th street at the beach and made it happen.  The commercial is part of a pubic service campaign to bring more attention to Global Warming.

mls: Copper Rush In Chesapeake - 03/30/08 01:00 PM

Oh my, not quite a gold rush but there seems to be a copper rush here in Chesapeake.  Copper is around $3.75 a pound.  That might not sound like much but when you can just go to your local new home site and pick up coils of it sitting around, it adds up fast.  Recently a young man was sentenced to jail time and ordered to pay Dominion Power back over $10,000 for restitution.  Cell towers are also a hot spot for thieves.  There is lots of wires and also copper grounding bars there for the picking.  The salvage yards are … (3 comments)

mls: Mortgage Insurers Cracking Down - 03/23/08 10:50 AM
I thought that maybe we had some breathing room in the lending industry when I find out that mortgage insurers are cracking down.  Did you know that they have flagged over 25% of the nations zip codes where they will not do business?  This includes the McMansions in Scottsdale, AZ Miami  luxury Miami codos: 1969 ranch houses in Flint, MI and in some cases, even Hampton Roads.  Some mortgage insurers have even blacked out the entire states of Florida, Michigan, Nevada and California.  If giving loans at all in some areas, Wells Fargo is requiring a 25% down payment and even … (2 comments)

mls: No Signs Wanted - 03/20/08 07:02 PM
I really hadn't paid much attention to it until recently but did you Norfolk has banned Electronic Signs?  It has been that way since about 2001 or so.  There are a few signs put up after that but very very few.  The city is looking into maybe making some slight changes but not very much.  I guess the city officials are still gun shy about the way the city used to look way back when the sailors were going crazy at the

mls: Ghent Station Gets Approval - 03/16/08 04:15 PM
Ghent Station, a $30 million bank and retail complex recently won city approval.  This will add 127,000 of commercial development ah the eastern end of 21st in historic Ghent.  The city will sell about 3 1/2 acres to the developer.  There will be about 96,000 sq ft of class A office space and nearly 400 garage spaces.  The city is subsidizing about $2 million in funding.  The city wanted to make sure there were enough parking spaces and that is what the developer is doing.

mls: NET = LOOP - 03/16/08 04:06 PM
The city of Norfolk has the NET, now Portsmouth has the LOOP.  Starting April 7, two shuttle buses will circle downtown Portsmouth, traveling from hotels to marinas to a commuter parking and the Naval Medical Center.  City leaders hope the buses will draw visitors from the waterfront farther up High Street, into new stores and eateries.  Hopefully it will ease parking problems and reduce congestion.  A federal grant pays for the buses for three years.  The buses are a hybrid diesel so at least they are low-emission.

mls: No Double Digit Assessments - 03/16/08 03:59 PM
Chesapeake Real Estate Assessor William Rice told city council that assessments will rise less than 1% this year.  That's the good news.  The bad news is that it will be more difficult to finance new projects.  In 2006 assessments increased an average of 28% and the tax rate was cut by 12 cents that year.  What a huge difference a year makes in real estate.
