norfolk: Waterside To Be Spruced Up - 10/10/08 06:43 PM
A while back I wrote a post on whether Waterside would stay or go. Recently Norfolk city council decided Waterside would stay for a while. The 25 year building will be getting a minor makeover costing several million dollars over the next few years. When first built Waterside sparked a rebirth of downtown but now has seemingly outlived its usefulness. There will be town hall meetings this fall and spring into 2010 to decide what to do with the building. It belongs to the city and there have been talks of building condos on the water there. It is quite a nice view

norfolk: Half Price Crepe Myrtle Sale - 09/14/08 01:40 PM
Here is something to think about as you bring your buyers along and they ask a a seemingly innocent question about what to do about the big tree down by the street. Be careful how you answer because this is a true story. A family on Melrose Parkway in Norfolk, Va recently decided to put a driveway in. Sounded easy enough but when they went to get a permit they found out that they needed a permit from the Department of Forestry. Why on earth did they need that. Because the trees that line Melrose Parkway are owned by the city. The residents then found that

norfolk: Bilinguel Pay - 09/14/08 01:10 PM
Sheriffs' in Virginia Beach are receiving $100 a month if they are proficient in Spanish. The jail population here is growing larger every year and there are over 100 inmates who don't speak English. The police department is looking at implementing a similiar program but need to find a source of funds. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads. norfolk: West Nile In Norfolk - 09/06/08 02:07 PM
Recently mosquitos in the Glenrock and Stoney Point area of Norfolk tested positive for the West Nile virus. Both areas have been treated by the mosquito control division but as always the public should be careful. People over 50 are at a greater risk then younger people. What can you do to reduce your risk? * Repair windows and screens *Wear long, loose, light colored clothing *Limit time outdoors between dusk and dawn * Use insect repellent http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads. norfolk: This Could Have Been Smelly - 07/24/08 07:52 PM
"Follow That Trash", a new Indie film was released recently. No it didn't get to the film festival in Cannes but it is here. The film was put out by the people at Keep Norfolk Beautiful and should be a keeper for civic groups and science classes. The writers Holly Carson and Nicole Dutil wrote a pure chronologcal narrative in this 8-minute DVD starting with a a woman wheeling a green garbage bin to the curb. It ends at the regional landfill in Suffolk complete with thousands of seagulls. It is a very straight forward but interesting film. For your viewing

norfolk: Here A Puff, There A Puff - 07/12/08 07:42 PM
Will smokers still buy cigarettes in Virginia Beach with a 22 percent tax increase? Six months I would have said no but now that gas is $4 bucks a gallon I don't see many people going out of the way to say some pennies on smokes. Some fear that smokers will go elsewhere to buy and put the budget out of whack. Virginia Beach charges 61 cents a pack, Norfolk 65 cents and Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk are at 50 cents a pack. The cities will probably tax themselves out of business one of these days but for now I think

norfolk: What's For Sale In Norfolk? - 05/26/08 12:52 PM
Do you know what is for sale in the city of Norfolk besides residential real estate? How about the World Trade Center. The assessed value is $37.5 million and its biggest tenant is gone in 2010. No wonder they want to sell it. How about Town Point Center which has a $9.76 million assessment. It is over 97% leased. These buildings are both rated class A or top of the line for office space. So if you have any buyers in your back pocket, now is the time to bring them out. Do you know what big buildings are for sale

norfolk: Mummichogs Is A Canary? - 05/03/08 04:49 PM
That is what they are called. Mummichogs are th canarys of the fish world. Scientists use them as an indicator of the overall environmental health in a specific waterway. In our case, the Elizabeth River. The fish are small, don't go very far and eat worms and algae. They in turn are fish food for bigger fish. There are several toxic spots in the river and they were tested recently. At one hot spot, next to an old creosote plant, 90% of the tested fish had tumors. Along the river that weren't known hot spots, the fish came up pretty normal

norfolk: Mahi Mah's New Chef - 04/26/08 10:38 AM
Do know who Otto Borischs is? My guess would be the new executive chef at Mahi Mah in Virginia Beach. This oceanfront eatery is the place to go for good food and Ottos' presence should only make it better. He spent time in the Navy, the Culinary Institute of America and had an appearance on the second season of "Top Chef". This restaurant can feed up to 3,000 people a day in mid tourist season and can be quite busy. Maui Mah has some great food and Otto has come up a new one called "country fried squid". I will leave

norfolk: New Method For Home Valuations On The Water - 04/26/08 10:03 AM
Some people are upset with the City Assessor Maria Kattmann. She has a new approach for assessing waterfront properties this year. Some of the assessments went up 200 percent. I bet the phone was ringing off the hook at her office. The approach seems to make sense but you would think maybe a gradual increase would have been better received. She values the properties depending on the type of water. Of course big river views get bigger assessments then small tidal creek views do. So far so good. She may have some more explaining to do but the approach from here

norfolk: Waterside To Go? - 03/30/08 01:25 PM
Once the main attraction downtown, Waterside is a victim of redevelopment. This used to be the only safe place to go downtown. Now there is MacArthur Mall, upscale restaurants and entertainment spots to go to. The mall is still full of business's but the people aren't coming like they used to. The mall has been reinvented several times and looks like it may be reinvented one more time. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads. norfolk: No Signs Wanted - 03/20/08 07:02 PM
I really hadn't paid much attention to it until recently but did you Norfolk has banned Electronic Signs? It has been that way since about 2001 or so. There are a few signs put up after that but very very few. The city is looking into maybe making some slight changes but not very much. I guess the city officials are still gun shy about the way the city used to look way back when the sailors were going crazy at the http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton

norfolk: NET = LOOP - 03/16/08 04:06 PM
The city of Norfolk has the NET, now Portsmouth has the LOOP. Starting April 7, two shuttle buses will circle downtown Portsmouth, traveling from hotels to marinas to a commuter parking and the Naval Medical Center. City leaders hope the buses will draw visitors from the waterfront farther up High Street, into new stores and eateries. Hopefully it will ease parking problems and reduce congestion. A federal grant pays for the buses for three years. The buses are a hybrid diesel so at least they are low-emission. http://www.deniseallen.com/ Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as

norfolk: Tide Rising In Norfolk - 12/20/07 09:25 AM
No nothing to do with global warming (maybe a little). The ground breaking for the Norfolk's starter light rail line, called the Tide. drew around 300 people. The mayor, Paul Fraim, expects the station at Harbor Park to be the transit hub that will connect light rail to a high speed rail line that would run to Richmond, Washington and beyond. Rising gas prices and growing congestion will force the city to rely more heavily on public transportation in the future. The light rail lines will end at Newtown Road because so far Virginia Beach has not signed on for the ride.

norfolk: Macarthur In Norfolk - 11/09/07 09:09 AM
The Macarthur Memorial in Downtown Norfolk will soon be getting a $4.5 million makeover and expansion. There will be a glass fronted great hall and a story wall that will face the street. The goal of the project is to draw more visitors to the downtown site to learn about the accomplishments of the five-star general. The improvements are seen as dynamic and inviting. With a cruise ship berth and the new light rail station just across the street, the new center is looking to bring in a lot more visitors.

norfolk: Norfolks Community Farm Market - 10/28/07 10:18 AM
The Five Points Community FArm Market is searching for a new home. Apparently the current location is drawing interst for a prospective tenant that wants to pay more for rent then it does. Where does a Farmers Market move to? They were looking at MacArthur Center but that has stalled for the moment. They are looking for something with over 3000 sq ft of space and would like to stay in the Norview area. Hopefully they will be able to make that happen.

norfolk: African Lion Surprises Staff - 10/08/07 07:11 PM
Zola gave birth to two tiny little furry cubs this weekend. The lioness apparently kept her showgirl figure and displayed no outward signs that she was packing. The cubs have about a 50% chance of surviving the say zoo officials. This is the first large carnivore birth at the zoo in 50 years. Mramba, her mate, had been practicing for at least a year. The cubs will stay for a year at the zoo and then will move on to continue the breeding process.

norfolk: Norfolk Animal Shelter No More - 08/13/07 09:07 AM
The cities animal shelter is getting a new name and logo. The animal shelter has a lot of problems including no director at the moment but city officials are trying to fix the problems. They have renamed the place to the Animal Care Center and are spending money to fix the place up and advertise to help clear out some of the animals. Hopefully it will succeed.
