louisiana: What is meant by "Imperial Calcasieu?" - 06/24/10 01:34 PM
As this blog-to explain what is meant by Imperial Calcasieu - was started, it became apparent that for the sake of those relocating to Southwest Louisiana, it would be best to explain "Why Louisiana has parishes instead of counties."
CalcasieuParish (Lake Charles is the "Parish Seat" of Calcasieu Parish) was first created in 1840 from one of the original 19 civil parishes established by the Louisiana legislature in 1807. That area was called "St. Landry Parish."
By 1840, the area had grown such that what had been Calcasieu Parish was separated into 5 smaller parishes.
The original, larger area is referred to now … (2 comments)

louisiana: Why does Louisiana have parishes instead of counties? - 06/24/10 01:15 PM
This blog started as a way to explain the term "Imperial Calcasieu" but became sidetracked due to the anticipated question "Why does Louisiana have parishes instead of counties?"
Since Louisiana is the only state in the nation that refers to our larger, local governments as "parishes" it is probably a good idea to provide a brief answer.
For the answer, one must look to the history of the state of Louisiana. The state was formed from colonies that were officially Roman Catholic and parishes was the common form of description for the areas served by the church. As a result, … (6 comments)

louisiana: Louisiana's GRAD Act - 06/22/10 02:49 PM
I'm pleased to report recent passage of legislation referred to as the GRAD Act, (Granting Resources and Autonomy for Diplomas Act) a major move in the right direction to support Louisiana colleges and universities.
To understand the need for the GRAD Act, it is important to note that, at this time, we are the only state that requires a two-thirds vote of the Legislature to raise college tuition.
The GRAD Act ties an increase in funding (up to 10%) to performance such as improving graduation rates, raising admission standards, and more.
It was introduced to the legislature this year with the backing of … (0 comments)

louisiana: Louisiana Drivers! Why wait until August to stop texting while driving? - 06/20/10 01:51 PM
Governor Jindal recently signed a bill that gives police the authority to stop a driver for texting while driving. The new law goes into effect on August 15th. Until that time, law enforcement officials can only cite a driver for texting while driving if they are pulled over for another alleged violation. Why wait until August 15th?  In the split second that you attempt to read, or create a text message, the accident you cause can result in a collision with horrible consequences.Hopefully, the $175.00 fine for the first offense and $500.00 fine for subsequent offenses will help to stop this practice, … (6 comments)

louisiana: The Beauty of Southwest Louisiana, Introduction - 03/28/08 03:52 PM
This is the introduction to what will be an ongoing series,  Here, and on Derenda.com, I introduce visitors to the beauty of Southwest Louisiana. This is familiar territory for me! One of the many joys of my teaching career and as the sponsor of the W. W. Lewis Middle School Science Club, was to introduce students to nature. What an outdoor classroom I had then and still enjoy today. In a separate post, the ravages suffered during hurricane Rita will be discussed.  For now, the most important thing to say is that the Creole Nature Trail has been reopened.  I was pleased to have been in attendance and even more pleased to bring you these photos.

louisiana: Newbie Derenda Grubb's introduction - 03/25/08 03:14 PM
Having forged ahead a bit, I realize now that I should have formally introduced myself, so here goes:
After teaching for many years, I became licensed with CENTURY 21 Bessette Realty and continue to enjoy my relationship and production with this quality organization.
Years ago, I discovered the power of the Internet in my classroom.  You know teachers are salespersons in reality.  They are trying to sell the student on the ideas and knowledge that can be learned each day.  Keep it exciting.  It was only logical to utilize this approach and technology to market my listings and I have used the … (35 comments)
