southwest louisiana: What is meant by "Imperial Calcasieu?" - 06/24/10 01:34 PM
As this blog-to explain what is meant by Imperial Calcasieu - was started, it became apparent that for the sake of those relocating to Southwest Louisiana, it would be best to explain "Why Louisiana has parishes instead of counties." CalcasieuParish (Lake Charles is the "Parish Seat" of Calcasieu Parish) was first created in 1840 from one of the original 19 civil parishes established by the Louisiana legislature in 1807. That area was called "St. Landry Parish." By 1840, the area had grown such that what had been Calcasieu Parish was separated into 5 smaller parishes. The original, larger area is referred to now

southwest louisiana: Calcasieu Animal Coaliton gets my attention and thanks! - 10/25/09 03:41 PM
On Saturday, after being made aware of a giant shopping and adoption event being sponsored by the Calcasieu Animal Coaltion, I decided to pay a visit. I was certainly familiar with the location, as the 4 Paws Pet Hotel is where my Granddog stays when it is necessary to board him. So, off I headed to Hardy Road in Sulphur where not only the Pet Hotel is located, but the 4 Paws Society, Inc is based. The Calcasieu Animal Coalition is made up of the 4 Paws Society, Hobo Hotel for Cats, the SWLA Humane Society, and the Humane Society of Lake

southwest louisiana: REALTORS invade Prien Lake Park - 07/09/08 04:41 PM
I've written before about Calcasieu Parish's new, beautiful Prien Lake Park. Recently, the Southwest Louisiana Association of REALTORS held what I hope will be our first annual picnic and Bar B Que at this wonderful facility. A busy bunch, we REALTORS! We work hard, and sometimes do not take time to play. We know the value of getting to know each other, but seldom are afforded the opportuntiy to do so. And, we all need to spend more time with our families! Armed with this knowledge, the entertainment committee of our local board put together a function that would satisfy each

There are so many positive "happenings" in and around Lake Charles and all of Southest Louisiana! It is almost as if the plants and wildlife sense the renewal, and not just of spring time! It is truly a place of beauty. While I am thankful for my years in the classroom, it certainly is a great time to be an agent in the real estate business in Lake Charles, LA! See lots more photos on a page dedicated to "The Beauty of Southwest Louisiana." As always, thanks to the the Southwest Louisiana Convention and Visitor's Bureau for making these photos available.

southwest louisiana: Shining bright in Southwest Louisiana - 03/30/08 04:10 PM
Several years ago, I bought real estate rights from Laura Kelley to this photo of the Lake Charles Civic Center at Night and have used it in multiple ways. In looking at it recently, it started me to thinking about all that Lake Charles, Southwest Louisiana and, of course, the entire region that suffered from the twin sisters of Katrina and Rita. In a few months we will enter another Hurricane season, but we are wiser, better prepared, and less fearful. Southwest Louisiana is very much like this beautiful structure which is shining more brilliantly in the dark than it may appear in the daylight. In the hours of the

This year marks the 51st anniversary of this festival that brings in 100,000 people by land and air. southwest louisiana: Newbie Derenda Grubb's introduction - 03/25/08 03:14 PM
Having forged ahead a bit, I realize now that I should have formally introduced myself, so here goes: After teaching for many years, I became licensed with CENTURY 21 Bessette Realty and continue to enjoy my relationship and production with this quality organization. Years ago, I discovered the power of the Internet in my classroom. You know teachers are salespersons in reality. They are trying to sell the student on the ideas and knowledge that can be learned each day. Keep it exciting. It was only logical to utilize this approach and technology to market my listings and I have used the

southwest louisiana: Preliminary Absorption rate chart - 03/22/08 10:57 AM
Based on the previous 12 month approach as outlined in this article found on Realtor.org, I researched data from the MLS system of the Southwest Louisiana Association of REALTORS to produce this absorption rate chart. Please note that this chart reflects all price ranges. With the exception of MLS area 80, which is Sulphur, the areas listed are in Lake Charles. Because this is a new offering, bear with me as I create these charts. For now, I'm detaling the 5 most active areas as defined by 2008 sales activity. Areas like Moss Bluff will be included soon. For more specific information relative to your area and

southwest louisiana: Lake Charles ranked 9th by Forbes.com's top 10 up-and-coming Tech cities - 03/16/08 10:08 PM
I'm jumping the gun a bit. What was going to be my first blog is still in the formative stages. That blog will hopefully be the result of an interview that is in the works with Dr. Doug McNiel of the H.C. Drew Center for Economic Development Information Services. Since one of the major purposes of my blog is to discuss local market conditions, an article in today's local paper, the American Press, is to good to pass up. The headline? "Study: LC hot spot for tech growth" It seems that Lake Charles, La, has been ranked 9th by Forbes.com in its
